... as I love my M7  just to let you know the camera counter doesn't work - doesn't go back to zero - and i'm going to send to Wetzlar 😥

That can happen with all the 'current' film Ms.  Happened to my MP and it is a very common issue.  Leica cheapened out with a pathetic plastic piece in the mechanism.

It is a simple repair that costs about $200 that any decent Leica shop can do.  No need to send to Wetzlar.

Not just the current Ms, it is fairly common and my M5 has that problem. The rest of the camera is fine so I just live with it.

I've used my M7 since 2002 with nary a problem or complaint. It's now 2022, must prove something.

Nary a problem - that's good.  But nary a complaint?  Really?

Look, I love this camera so much I have two of them.  And mine have the latest DX reader.  But that whole DX system, with the tiny flashing LED in the VF if you do not use DX film, or if you do use DX film but decide to change the ISO rating, or if you d ouse DX film but decide to use exposure comp, or, or, or....  all have the same annoying little LED!

I would have preferred it immeasurably if it just did NOT have a DX reader!  Then none of that stuff would happen or matter!  And it would have been simpler and cheaper to make!

But I still forgive it as I love it so much.  And because of it got rid of my  Bessa R3A and Zeiss Ikon ZM.  Those do not compare.

Thanks for your comments Matlock , Huss , Edstock .

Anyway I agree with you the M7 works well not like some digital Leica cameras . Started in 2010 with an M8 M9 with CCD Kodak sensor I find that the M7 is an M8 but in film and that's what I wanted and as now I only photograph in film we can forgive this counter which does not return to zero ....😀

Dear LikaLeica,

I notice you have the lens set at f/16.  Early this century repairers/servicemen/feinmechaniker advised leaving lenses wide open when travelling; that when closed down a mist from the lubricant on the aperture blades settles on the internal lens elements degrading subtly the quality of images and reducing contrast.

In 1970 I bought the latest Summicron (II) 1:2/35.  It was handled responsibly, but usually left at f/5.6 or thereabouts.  When held up to the light it looked as good as new.  However, after  receiving the above advice I spent €300.00 at Solms having it cleaned, lubricated and adjusted.   On return its lens elements sparkled and the colour saturation on slide film was noticeably improved.

Thanks for the tip!  I usually keep it wide open

If you are not using a lens cap, and outdoors, better to keep it stopped down to reduce risk of shutter burn.  Or set lens to min focus.

Thank you.  Yes, I always have the lens cap on and sometimes I even remember to remove it when taking a picture!  My first Leica was a IIIC that I acquired in 1968, so I've become accustomed to the cameras over the years.  But I appreciate the advice.

Good morning LikaLeica,

Same year as I bought my first Leica.

However I never fit a lens cap when the camera is "out" so to speak.  The lens is fitted with an after-market rubber lens-hood which protects the lens if accidentally bumped.

When I behold the Barnack Leica, I can't help but think of the 356 Porsche. Both are all that are needed for pure enjoyment of the pursuits they represent. This is a lovely example.

On the subject of M7. I had one and sold it about 4 or 5 years ago. Now that I am north of 60, I am thinking that the auto exposure, combined with the joy of the aesthetics of the M6 would be a real advantage.....Just focus on the grandchildren and let the camera worry about exposure.

Hi Wayne , the M7 is practical and " fast" according to Depardon when you choose option "A"  as an "Automatic" .

I don't use M8 or M9 digital anymore but it's like option A on this camera

Best

Agreed.  The fastest camera there is.  None of the infinitesimal delay while a computer chooses the exposure.

Henry, I just send you a message.  Even though they have officially discontinued the a la carte program, this was essentially an a la carte conversion.
