Has anyone snap pics yet, any difference images?

I love my M240 even more after the FW update

Managed to updated the FW and hit the street just in time for a spectacular sunset

The Auto ISO is a feature I use heavily and i'm so glad the M240 follows the family tradition now

This day ended well. Gotta love Leica.

I can't see the horizon without live-view. It's necessary for me. Also the horizon was better with degrees.

You are correct. You can no longer access the Horizon function from the Menu. The good news is that you no longer have to access the Horizon function from the Menu. You simply set the Horizon to "On" and use the Info button when in LV.

All of this means that, for the way you are used to using Horizon, it won't work. You have to use the LV to see the horizon now. But, the horizon now stays on after each shot without having to go through the Menu. And, you can even peak at the LV image if, you want, while you are lining the shot up... you don't have to take your eye off of the Horizon and go back to the OVF.

So, it is going to mean a change in the way you use Horizon when you are shooting with the OVF. And, yes, the degree readout was at least interesting. I'm not sure how I would use that information, though?

Great job, Leica. Definitely a big improvement in usability!

I never had issues with high temperatures, but was worried by some reports since I'm leaving in a few days for an extended trip to California/Nevada (including a fair share of desert sightseeing). Not the best season, I know, but so it is. Al least I am somewhat reassured that the camera should perform adequately, as long as I use standard caution and don't leave it exposed to the blazing sun or in hot, confined environments.

Now all I'd need is being able to re-assign the video button and manage the sensitivity of focus peaking. I'd also like to be able to move the focus point around the frame in EVF/LV mode, but I don't think it's realistic in this incarnation of the M processor (and I mostly use the RF anyway).

...You have to use the LV to see the horizon now...

I thought that LV was mandatory to see the horizon. Was it visible in the optical viewfinder as well? Just curious as it is a feature i've never used so far.

Happy to be able now to desactivate LV and the stupid and badly placed video button. With the half case, the superior border of the leather protection repeatedly did start the live view. Now the m240 enters in tbe adult age.

Yes, LV is now mandatory to see the horizon. The technicality that odeon is getting at is; before, you could shoot Classic-OVF... no stinking LV EVF or LCD screen. You just pretend you have an M9 and access the Horizon from the menu, which didn't show you a LV image, just a black background.

Now, for example, odeon can't use the new Classic Mode that disables the LV button because, the Horizon function is predicated on the use of LV. Hence, no Horizon function when you are trying to shoot the M240 as a classic OVF RF camera. He is still stuck with leaving the LV button active.

I think he would have liked the "OFF" choice to have remained like it was in ver. 1.2. Then he could turn off the LV button (and the MOVIE button) and shoot in a fashion he enjoys... classic RF. When he wants the Horizon he could have accessed it through the MENU. He can't do that now. I think that is what he is getting at?

Maybe, Leica can return the access to the Horizon function from the MENU when, the user chooses Classic LV/Disabled. Users could choose to view the Horizon on a black screen like ver 1.2.

I'd never use it this way, but it makes as much sense to me as keeping the old, broken AUTO ISO in ver. 1.5:p ... I mean for me, IMHO, just me, I'm not saying keeping the old AUTO ISO as a choice was wrong, or it was ever a bug, or that it even needed fixing, I'm just a chronic bitcher-moaner, complainer, and I really didn't need Auto ISO to function like the M9, heck to be honest... I hardly ever used it when I had the M9. :D:D:D

Charged my battery all night last night and when I put it in the camera this morning it was showing 90% even though both lights on the charger were solid..........strange

I must be as stupid as the video button i guess as i find it ideally placed for my needs. Same with my Fuji X-E2 by the way but the latter's button cannot be disabled contrary to the M240's. The Fuji button can be reconfigured though.

A short(?) review of the new firmware:

1) The Horizon Level is now enabled to superimpose over the LV-scene image. The menu option "Horizon" has a choice that enables this feature. This is one of my favorite new additions and it has been very handy when shooting my WATE. Once set up in the menu it is easily deployed by pressing the INFO button. Previously, it could only be shown on a blank screen and for me was unusable this way.

2) AUTO ISO is now available in Manual Mode (manual selection of shutter speeds). This is a great feature that was on previous digital M cameras and was changed on how it worked on the M240. I missed this a lot on the new M240 and just thought it seemed broken. Now, in the menu you can to choose if, you want the new AUTO ISO in M mode (to continue to change the ISO in response to changes you make in shutter speed) when, the Set menu choice (or ISO button) is set in "AUTO ISO in M mode" to "On." Hurray!

Maximum exposure time now allows up to 4 x f. Also, the ISO button shows all ISO settings at a glance - very nice addition.

3) Crop marks are now shown superimposed on the LCD screen when the up or down arrow is pressed. I like that not only 16:9 video aspect ratio is displayed to help line up the video before the record button is pressed, but also a host of other aspect ratios are available. I like the square aspect ratio and have been enjoying visualizing some shots like this.

4) A setting was added to disable the "M" button on the deck of the camera so recording can't be accidentally started when in a camera bag or from an accidental press. Also, those that never wanted video on their M can no disable it and pretend it isn't there.

5) A classic mode is available for those that don't want to use the LCD and don't want to accidentally hit the LV button. Some of you guys are going to get your wish and have a more classic M. Put some tape over the EVF port and the LCD screen and pretend you got a film M. Something for everyone.

6) One nice function, EF control with the thumbwheel is an option in the menu. It was difficult to press the front button and turn the thumbwheel. Now, a more direct and easier way to simply change EV is allowed. Works really well and I know a lot of members have written that this was a big one. (I don't use EV comp, but that is for another discussion). Really nice response from Leica to a much requested and logical request. I bet Edward is pretty happy now.

7) Permanent Exposure simulation is new. Now the LCD can display the exposure all the time without having to half press the shutter release. Nice for video and for all around use. This new feature works all the way down to 1/30 of a second. If, you want to see the exposure bellow 1/30 second, then you will have to use the choice of "release button half pressed." I've switched to this as my default mode.

8) A nice fix, the exposure bracketing now stick when you turn the camera off. This was most annoying and made this feature previously unusable, for me. Maybe, now I'll experiment a little with HDR although, another set or two of brackets need to be added by Leica.

9) The LV lock-ups we experienced in hot environments has now been fixed. I am not sure how extensively this could be tested in a short period of time, but none of the Beta testers experienced a lock-up. I'm pretty sure there will be some reports of lock-ups as low batteries, multiple button presses, continuous mode, and memory cards or who knows what seem to plague some people from time to time.

10) LV focus peaking has some new colors. I seem to still like red. Maybe, there will be a circumstance I'll change this?

11) EXIF data issues that most probably were never aware of were fixed. This does cause LR and other programs to not report things like the lens information now. Auto Lens Detect in LR does not work after this FW update. Adobe has said they will update their side of this to resolve the changes made by Leica. It should be in the next Adobe LR update.

12) My screw mount lenses now work with LV! Yeah.

13) I don't use GPS or the grip, but updates to the location issues with JPEG have been addressed. Other cameras delete the location when there is no GPS signal and leave the EXIF data field blank, Leica chose to use the last location instead. Now, the location is deleted after 5min if no GPS signal is present. Somebody else will have to comment on this.

14) The sensor cleaning bug and a several others are now fixed. Some other stuff is in this FW as well.

All in all I found this a pretty impressive and extensive FW update. I find it makes an already solid camera just that much better and the added features were extremely welcome additions. Recommended. I have hopes Leica is getting settled in their new location and that this is just the beginning of more good things to come.

Rick

This is not a FW update-it is like 3 FW updates. Great job! Finally I might get to stop discussing my lockups and get on with photography!

I think that is what he is getting at?

I suppose so. In my view the original implementation of the artificial horizon was a curiosity at best; now it is really useful. But apparently there are those who miss the old version. I wouldn’t have guessed.

Hi Neil, that is strange. Maybe, you could post it in its own unique battery thread. It might get lost here.

and you sure the battery is not bad?

I have never had an issue with the charger, but I typically leave the batteries on overnight. I have 3 batteries and as one is discharged I leave it on the charger overnight so I always have at least 2 fully charged when I leave for the day. Ive never had a battery come off the charger that didn't read 99-100% in the camera

TGP (TheGoddamnParticle) - I got home and had a chance to look at your pictures on my big monitor. Those are really great. Really is a nice camera system, isn't it? It will be interesting to see what is next from Leica that we can use our current and past lenses with.

By the way, do you have another name besides The GoddamnParticle?

Rick
