Popular Post A miller Posted June 27, 2014 Popular Post Share #1 Posted June 27, 2014 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I very randomly ran into this person this evening after work on my way to my car in lower Manhattan. He was shirtless amidst a rush of happy-hour yuppies. I asked him if I could take his picture. He initially refused and then I said that we could conceivably make some money together if he signed a release ("Hey, ya never know!" ). He quickly became very interested and said that he was HOMELESS. Now he looked like a typical gritty New Yorker who possibly was after a workout. But homeless?! Not only is he homeless, but he said that there is actually some notoriety around him. He spent his adolescence homeless after being kicked out of him home by his MOTHER as a young teenager. He was a very good basketball player and received some help through some homeless shelters to cultivate his skills. This lead to him receiving a scholarship to the University of Hawaii, where he was the starting point guard. I guess he neglected to capitalize on the opportunity to get a good college education and make something of himself because he is 34 years old and back on the streets without a home. We exchanged phone numbers and I gave him some cash for his trouble... Very sad story. There are a few articles about him on google if anyone is interested. Toshack10 Posted July 30, 2018 Share #15 Posted July 30, 2018 The second shot is stunning - it looks almost staged or stitched with the "normal" life going on in the background, with your subject unseen and ignored Sad - but all too common - story. There but for the grace of a deity go many of us

fotografr Posted March 14, 2019 Share #17 Posted March 14, 2019 I'm not sure how this got past me it was first posted, but I'm glad I saw it just now. The first image is my favorite, probably because of the rather nonchalant expression. Your use of the strobe is excellent in that it's barely noticeable. fotografr Posted December 1, 2023 Share #20 Posted December 1, 2023 Looking back at these images now and reading the comments and stories about this man's life, I am absolutely baffled by the callous reaction of the one person who clicked the "laugh" button. What could possibly be seen as funny?
