wlaidlaw Posted November 28, 2014 Share #341 Posted November 28, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wilson, are you sure that you run the latest firmware? Mine used to do that, but never more after I updated. The lockups these guys are talking about are the random ones, not the thermal ones. Jaap, I am running 2.0.1.5 as I understand that 2.0.1.7 is an update for the Summarit lenses only. I was taking photos of sunrise over Zhu Mountain and the people watching it in the Alishan Forest Reserve in Taiwan. As it was quite low light, I was using the EVF and peaking to focus my Noctilux plus focus spread over a series of shots. I had to give up and revert to the RF as it locked up three times in quick succession. As I had a QR plate on to use with a monopod, this was a real pain to undo it all to pop the battery. Advertisement Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Hi wlaidlaw, Take a look here Anyone figure out why the 240 freezes up?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted November 28, 2014 Share #342 Posted November 28, 2014 Wilson, my thermal lockups never required more than an off-on switch, so I think you were experiencing the “regular” ones, which fortunately never happened to me.
CheshireCat Posted November 28, 2014 Share #343 Posted November 28, 2014 you were experiencing the “regular” ones Also called "software bugs" by connoisseurs

jyaworsky Posted November 28, 2014 Share #345 Posted November 28, 2014 My 240 M-P freezes up a lot now. With and without the EVF. Power switch won't turn camera off at times also. Firmware 2.0.1.5 Will try new cards. Been using Sandisk extreme pro 32 gig. Ridiculous.
algrove Posted November 28, 2014 Share #346 Posted November 28, 2014 Regular, thermal or whatever-they are lockups freeze ups all the same. I do wonder what you smoke in that pipe based onj your comments here.
algrove Posted November 28, 2014 Share #347 Posted November 28, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Louis, you will report how your fixed body behaves now hopefully. Yes, but it will be into January/February before I give it a thorough try.
Berlinman Posted November 28, 2014 Share #348 Posted November 28, 2014 I had lockups with two different M240. Most if the lockups with EVF but not all. A lot of lockups are softwareproblems with the autozoom in LV, which Leica will fix in the future ... Some of the forum members have forced me to send my camera to Leica, what I now did - I keep You posted...

I do wonder what you smoke in that pipe based onj your comments here. Well, given that mine never locks up, even over the last few weeks in the heat with constant EVF and well over 100 GB of shots, I might well inquire the same from you.... Some where on this site you commented that your M240 acted up which sure sounded like a thermal or regular freeze up to many.
jaapv Posted November 28, 2014 Share #351 Posted November 28, 2014 Correct - before the firmware update and over a year ago. After that the thermal freezes were gone and the others never occurred at all.
jyaworsky Posted November 28, 2014 Share #352 Posted November 28, 2014 what is it about the EVF that is making it hang up? Happening to mine as well.
pico Posted November 28, 2014 Share #353 Posted November 28, 2014 what is it about the EVF that is making it hang up? Happening to mine as well. Memory mismanagement. I hope someone will create alternative open-source for the Leicas as they have for other brands, but it seems unlikely considering the small market Leica enjoys, or not. pop Posted November 28, 2014 Share #354 Posted November 28, 2014 Memory mismanagement. I hope someone will create alternative open-source for the Leicas as they have for other brands, but it seems unlikely considering the small market Leica enjoys, or not. I don't think so. It appears that both the EVF and the camera go to sleep after a certain period of inactivity. The period of inactivity which sends the device to sleep sometimes seems to be shorter for the EVF than for the camera. The photographer (and possibly the camera as well) then becomes confused when the EVF goes dark and the camera does not visibly react any more. It often helps to just push the EVF button on the EVF twice when it appears to have gone to sleep. This only explains one of possibly many ways the camera can freeze up. drdannn Posted November 29, 2014 Share #356 Posted November 29, 2014 I changed from San Disk cards to Transcend (top of the range/max speed 64GB ones), after reading that they were much better and have had more lock ups than ever. I can easily make mine lock up. Put on the EVF, turn it on and take photos rapidly in a warm environment. This points to it being a thermal issue. BTW I always do a full format of the card with SD formatter before using. Wilson Hi , I use the 16 and 32gb cards. Don't know if that makes a difference. Also I use the 90mb/s (600X). I just put my camera in continuous shooting mode, EVF on, and fired until the buffer was full. No lock-up. I'm here in Los Angeles and the temp here is approx. 70 degrees. FYI... pop Posted November 29, 2014 Share #357 Posted November 29, 2014 This is yet another bug, but this is not the lockup we are talking about. Quite, as I have said above. However, there is no way of telling if we all speak about the same kind of lockup and even if every situation presumed by the user to be a lockup is, in fact, a situation which qualifies as a lockup in a technical sense. We have to accept as a fact that not every Leica user has received any training in recent methods of problem determination.
wlaidlaw Posted November 29, 2014 Share #358 Posted November 29, 2014 Dan, The M240 camera is a perfect example of the Muphy's law that we have all experienced when we take a car into a garage, that the fault which has been driving (or not driving) us up the wall, has mysteriously disappeared. The lock-ups virtually never appear to order or when testing but only at the time of maximum inconvenience. I thought mine had more or less gone with 2.0.1.5 FW but they reappeared with a vengeance when in Taiwan and using an EVF. Now that I am back in the UK and inside (not much different in temperature to mornings in Taiwan), they have gone. Wilson
asabet Posted November 29, 2014 Share #359 Posted November 29, 2014 Hard to convince Leica or whatever camera maker that a problem they tried to fix already is still "clearly prevalent" if we don't feel the need to ask for a repair, a refund or a replacement. Based on the number of people in this thread alone having this issue, this issue is prevalent enough that Leica can find it amongst their own test cameras if they dedicate the necessary resources. This is not an open beta where we are testing the camera for them. It is their responsibility to put out a product that has been adequately sorted. This is a partial list of cameras I have owned in the past decade: Amin Sabet: Gear list: Digital Photography Review The M240 is my favorite of them all. It's also the only one I've ever had an issue with or complained about. Never had a complaint about my M8 or M9. Oil spots on my Nikon D600 sensor didn't bother me - I cleaned them. Cracks on my Olympus E-M5 bezel didn't bother me - cosmetic issue. White orbs on a Fuji X10 sensor didn't bother me. They rarely ruined a good shot. But having to do a battery pull and then losing the last shot I just took is a terrible experience. I'd love to have a backup M240 and send this one to Solms, but it's beyond my budget. Maybe I'll sell this one at some point to fund an M-P or whatever comes next, but I'm not looking forward to taking the resale value hit that comes with disclosing that my M is one of the (apparently many) ones that freezed up occasionally requiring a battery pull. Now that I am back in the UK and inside (not much different in temperature to mornings in Taiwan), they have gone. And this is the reason why Leica programmers should get a nice free vacation to Taiwan and take a lot of pictures. Oh, and they will not be able to return home until the bug is fixed.
