Anyone figure out why the 240 freezes up?

I ended up getting a new board for the camera and my lockups are reduced in number and severity. Now if I check the screen (when the LED goes out) the camera gets a bit 'flakey' and locks up. If I wait a few minuets it tends to clear itself or I switch off and on to get it working.

As an aside, I did pull the battery today, but I think turning the camera off first is a good precaution.

Perhaps Lloyd needs a new board for his M240:

"And eighteen months after its introduction the M240 still shows itself to still be an unreliable tool when the camera has to work, malfunctioning repeatedly every day. It is infuriating to lose shots due to camera malfunction, but 18 months have not fixed the M240 (and this body is the replacement for my 1st lemon)."

I think Lloyd does not get on with Leica. Also, his findings are that Zeiss is always the best. Zeiss may well be, but after one of his reviews of a Zeiss lens I tried a Zeiss lens for my Canon and prfered the Canon lens.

By the way I predict his results for the field test of the Zeiss Distagon will be, Zeiss number 1, Voigtlander number 2, and why anybody would buy the Leica...

Hi, It was the 32gb, 90MB/s, 600x. Dan:)

Thank you Dan. Just tested the 16GB version together with 200x and 300x Transcend cards. Found them rather on the slow side i must say but they have perhaps the same merits as yours i don't know. Never got the least freeze or lockup personally so i cannot compare from this standpoint.

Not true. Lloyd has several in-depth articles where he praises Leica lenses.

The problem with Lloyd is that he has no problem pointing out issues in Leica products.

When optical quality is the only thing that matters, many Zeiss lenses beat "equivalent" Leica lenses because they are typically designed for performance, while Leica lens design is usually a compromise between performance and size.

By the way, which Canon lens you preferred to which Zeiss lens ?

I own both the FLE and the CV, and based on Zeiss reviews I can predict that the winner is:

Optical performance: Zeiss, Leica, Voigtlander.

Price/performance: Voigtlander, Zeiss, Leica

Portability: Leica, Voigtlander, Zeiss

Ooops, each lens has got a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place .

Which lens is the winner then ? It all depends on what is more important for you. Which may not be what is more important for Lloyd.

I think you finally nailed it, at least for my critera.

Performance, in the field, is about more than just optics if you are a hands on photographer. It must take into account size, weight, discreetness etc. On that basis you have indicated all three lenses have differing virtues. Each better adapted to differing tasks. Choose accordingly. Of course, cash strapped photographers (isn't that all of us!) will need to opt for one kit that best suits all, on average. That could be another parameter to measure.:D

I had some of my freezes while focussing with EVF/LV in Autozoom-Mode. Leica wrote me today that they could reproduce the failure and that it is a software problem and will be fixed with the next FW-Update. Pressing LV, Play, Iso, Menue or Set would help in that special case.

Interesting thanks. May i ask if your problem occurred when turning the focus ring, or the thumb wheel, or both? Just curious.

Please advise what you mean by 'many' and 'equivalent' ..... and can you provide the evidence that supports this statement ?

I find this surprising and would certainly like to be enlightened .....

Yes, it occured when turning the ficus ring.

Thanks for sharing. I believe you of course but i've tested the auto focus-aid feature with a dozen Leica and non Leica lenses, coded and uncoded, and i've nevet got the least freeze or lock-up doing this. The next firmware update will fix your problem hopefully.

No lock-up here when testing or when using this feature previous to you calling attention to this. ??? Still no lock-ups here since the update. The M240 has been rock solid for me. Recommended.

By "equivalent" I mean +/-10% FL at the same aperture.

By "beat" I mean raw optical performance.

And a few lenses are: 15 Distagon, 35 ZM, 135 APO Summicron, 55 Otus, 85 Otus, [possibly more].

If you are biased toward size/performance, Leica is hard to beat.

If you are biased toward price/performance, Zeiss and CV are in a different league than Leica.

Very interesting. I'm not using EVF at all, and with the latest firmware and a quick SD card I thought the problem was fixed, only until last week... when I had it again and it occurred when turning the focus while pressing the shutter - I thought, this to be just coincidence, but maybe there is more behind it. Even though I don't think there is a relation when NOT using EVF...

This is real progress. Thanks for pressing the issue with Leica since a year ago face to face with them they denied it occurs at all.

Very interesting.

Very interesting indeed. I am getting lockups when I shoot soccer. I do not use EV or LV, but I do constantly focus. Maybe focusing in conjunction with writing images to SD card and/or triggering the shutter release trips the camera up?
