Auto ISO problem with 2.0.0.12

Just recently got my M240 with firmware 2.0.0.12 installed from the factory. Have set up the auto ISO function with max ISO 3200 and 1/focal length. With camera on A and using live view I can see that the ISO changes and the shutter speed is on 1/focal length but when actually taking the picture the ISO stays at ISO 200 and the time is set really long.

 

If I change from 1/focal length to min shutter speed to for example 1/60 the ISO is changed automatically.

 

Anyone else that have had this problem?

I have a brand new 240... 2 weeks old, factory installed firmware 2.0.0.12. Set dial to A, Auto ISO, Max ISO is 3200 and max exposure is 1/focal length.

 

I just took a few shots in some darker rooms and the ISO was 1250, 400, 3200 depending where I was. I first used the viewfinder, then LV. What am I missing?

OP: I have f/w ........11, which I believe to be effectively the same as yours ........12 ( I can't remember the gory details of the change, picked over ad nauseam on this forum).

I have just checked Auto ISO, and it doesn't perform the same as yours. When I set Auto ISO, Auto shutter speed, and 1/f as the lower limit, it performs as one would expect: ISO and shutter speed adjust until it can no longer expose correctly, then it lengthens the exposure time. I normally set max ISO to 2500, but just tried with 3200 - no difference.

 

As you'll discover by reading, there was a change in Auto ISO operation from M9 to M240, but a bug was introduced into the system at the same time (viz. you are permitted to set Auto ISO with a manual shutter speed, but Auto ISO doesn't actually work in this set up - it just sets the last ISO you used without telling you in advance what it is doing). The next new f/w is expected to both sort the bug and, possibly, allow both "classic" and M240-style Auto ISO - but anyone holding their breath for the new f/w expired long ago.

 

So I can't explain your problem - but this explains some of the previous cryptic remarks.

Typical behavior with uncoded lenses. Try to hand code yours or to choose it manually in the lens detection menu and Auto Iso will work as intended i.e. perfectly for me and badly for many LUF members here. :)

Tried with a 90 with the same result.

 

Has a friend that also has a M240 but with firmware xxx.11 and he has no problem with the auto ISO. Compared the set up between the two cameras and they are identical.

I get it that your lenses are coded, i.e. have black and white pits on the bayonet of the lens. Then it is possible that the coding sensor array is somewhat soiled or scratched. Otherwise, did you try to enter the lens type in the lens detection menu? Does it work then? If so you might have to return the body due to misalignment of the sensor array i'm afraid.

Bumping this thread. Can't believe we don't have a fixed firmware yet.

 

Auto ISO is not working with my uncoded lenses, like - for example - my Summicron 90.

 

Ok, the camera can't know whether the lens is a 28 or a 90, but it could assume it is at most 90.

That would not be ideal for an uncoded 28, but better than nothing.

Why don't you set Lens Detection to Manual? Works fine then. Otherwise your 90/2 can be coded easily.

 

Take it as professional bias, but I never do what a computer can do for me. After all, I am a human :)

 

The other reason is that I am human, and if I set lens detection to Manual (talk about lens "detection"), I forget setting it back to auto.

 

To summarize: the firmware is broken and must be fixed !

Some of us must be the culprits then... We've been working on firmware update 2.0.1.5 in June 2014 i.e. after the opening of this thread and all beta testers were happy with the results of the then-new auto iso in manual mode actually. Pity you were not with us you could have explained Leica how useful it may be to get auto iso features working the same way on non-coded 28mm and 90mm lenses. Most pre-digital Leica lenses, including your (and my) 90/2 pre-apo, can be 6-bit coded by Leica, current ZM and CV lenses can be hand coded easily as well so i suspect the "fix" you're after will happen when pigs can fly, but i may be wrong.

Then I assume that beta testers were all using coded lenses, which is not very wise for a beta tester.

The best feature of the M line is compatibility with all the great M lenses of the past without the need to "fix them" with 6-bit codes (which may take a very long while). How could this be left untested ?!

 

It is just 1 line of code. No need for pigs to fly, just tell them to change the code from:

- If 6-bit code not present, then freak-out and disable Auto-ISO

To:

- If 6-bit code not present, then fallback to the maximum FL detected by the frameline selector.

 

Other cameras don't even have a frameline selector, and they fallback to 50mm.

I wonder if who is in charge of Leica's firmware development ever used a camera.

I cannot be the judge. As far as i'm concerned, my Leica, ZM and CV lenses were coded by Leica or by myself. As for your 90/2 pre-apo, i would recommend a coding by Leica or a competent workshop as there is a misplaced screw head on the original flange of the lens.
