Thinking about the cost/price/value of the gear over your shoulder is sure to interfere with your thinking about your next picture. Make sure your gear is on your house/renter policy or a separate rider and don't worry about it.

Also, there are ways not to look like a victim on the street. Keep your head up, look pleasant, don't be furtive or tiptoe around looking like a creep or a victim. Be aware of your surroundings and be confident in being there doing what you're doing.

I will carry with the strap over my shoulder, with the camera held at my elbow. This is more comfortable than having the rig bouncing on your front, and less conspicuous... yet very fast into action as needed.

Don’t worry, be happy now! :D

I lengthened the strap and carry the camera over my opposite shoulder, bandolier fashion, less attractive for a grab-and-run. And above all, most practical in use.

That's a good advice, thanks. I still haven't insured anythig. I've been living in the US for the last four years, but traveling few times a year home to Europe. I will have to investigate which group could cover Europe, and the US.

Apart from that, I'm "only" 34, 1.93cm, 98kg, and played basketball as a shooting guard for fourteen years. I have a good stance when in the streets, fast legs, and no worries in general. Problematic are dingy areas, which could be quite attractive for shooting, and if someone (especially if there's more than one) has a plan to steel something from you... ...you see, this is where I become paranoid :)

...oh, I don't regret buying the new M. I switched from Canon, and it's L glass, and the first best thing that happened was the camera is on me all the time. I've been using the M for seven months, and the output still surprises me. RF experience is wonderful, and I don't see a way I could go back.

I have no regrets but sometime I ask myself if the price was worth it.

I had the opportunity to try some Fuji cameras and at the end of the day I got some amazing results, in my opinion comparable to the ones I get with the M, at a bit of the price.

Obviously the experience is totally different but I can't help but think if the final result is really worth 5500 dollars difference.

The question is whether the experience, not the pictures, is worth that difference.;)

I find that because the experience is different, my pictures end up being "better", at least in terms of choice of subject and composition, than those taken with another camera. YMMV, of course.

I would never pay my dealer anything more than a small deposit in advance. They receive credit terms from their distributors, so why should your money gain interest in their bank account?

It was the only way to prevent them raising the price again. Here in Sydney, it was $7990 in August, $8500 in September, then when it was on sale at $8070 so I asked them how can I lock that sale price in. Thinking they thought I was a new customer asking to put a deposit, that they cant give me sale price unless I pay the whole thing and that to order it, it would cost me $9000 - I almost wanted to tell them I had a deposit and wanted it back then and there... Thankfully the manager confirmed my order and got me the $8k price

Other than that, No regrets - playing with an M3, an OM1 and a friends M and so I don't feel Im missing out yet.

I own the M9, Monochrom and M(240).

I have no regrets whatsoever purchasing the M.

Improved output over the M9:

More detail and resolution in files

Improved dynamic range (DR)

I prefer the colour which is to me is more neutral

More tonality in B&W conversions (probably due to increased DR

Files are flatter due to increased DR but are much more robust in PP

Improved features leading to improved photographs over the M9:

Improved rangefinder allows more accurate focusing

EVF (despite it's limitations) allows increased versatility and focus accuracy when using some lenses wide open where there is very shallow DOF and/or focus shift (ie 1.0/50 Noctilux or 3.4/135 APO-Telyt)

Improved user experience (ie just nicer to use):

Improved rangefinder

I really like the red frame-lines

I really like the shutter

It's a much more refined device

Improved versatility:

Other lenses, esp Leica-R - for me the 28-90 Vario-Elmar and 28-PC

Live view for landscapes and macro (not used much at all to date)

Video - not used yet but as an amateur photographer having that option to take a quick video at a family function or whatever is very convenient

These mean that I don't need a second camera system as this now fulfils all of my wants & needs

What annoys me (but not deal breakers)

Italian flag artefact still a mild issue with some lenses

Auto ISO stuff up

EVF still a bit primitive but works for me

ISO setting display on back screen very difficult to see sometimes c/w the layout on the M9 and should be in white not red text.

Having said all of that, I still prefer the results I get from the Monochrom

I concur in all points having used the M 250 for 3/4 of a year with no failures. The latest firmware is an improvement (I feel), as I previously had some strange colors which I attribute to the still relatively high sensitivity to IR.

I appreciate the LV function because I can now use my Nikon F lenses ( f.i. 58 mm Noct 1.2) as well as many Leica R lenses with a Novoflex adapter for the Nikons and a Leica R/M adapter for the R lenses. I also use a Novoflex adapter for Visoflex lenses.

As I use the M 240 for copying old b&w photos, the macro possibilities with various adapters is very valuable. I have not yet duplicated many slides (mainly Kodachrome 25 and 64) but anticipate good results here as well.

  • 2 weeks later...

I dont regret getting the new M but after having used it for a couple of months I am still not 100% convinced if I did not like the M9P output slightly better.

I am not 100% sold regarding the colors + I have struggled with the IR contamination under certain light conditions.

High ISO is great, the new shutter is great, the slightly higher weight (compared to M9) is not so great.

I don't regret either. But what I don't see is the improved viewfinder. For me it is absolutely the same except the new M is switched off.

Another thing is that I have noticed that the red framelines are not that good since the left is much less illuminated than the rest wilts the white framelines are gorgeous.

Did anybody else recognized it?

I use the red ones - the white ones are overbearing to my eye. I do see improved RF accuracy too. Do check whether your eyes and camera are well matched. You may need a diopter without knowing.

How could anyone regret buying the best rangefinder ever made? Sounds like more and more photogs don't buy an M for it's rangefinder nowadays. Hence the so-called "competition" with EVILs like Sony A7s.

MarkP's considerations are perfect to me. It is an excellent camera. Superb. A real improvement compared to the M9/M8. Not a mere incremental change, but a real jump ahead.

Rangefinder cameras are a niche product for connoisseurs. It is not a mainstream product and we cannot expect it to behave like a reflex or a typical mirrorless camera. But even in this regard, the new M is the most versatile camera ever made.

All the new M lenses have been renovated to new designs. The current M lens line also is the best in all Leica history. Not even Mandler could imagine this level of performance and manufacturing quality and precision (standards and tolerances for digital capture are far higher and tighter).

I would like to be richer though... it is my only complain.

Supposedly the improvement comes from less stray light in the rangefinder, increased contrast I guess. The frame line illumination could be patchy in low light on the M9.

I've not noticed the lower level on the red but I don't pay much attention to the lines!

Like Tom I still prefer the colour from the M9p though by a small margin, it just seems so right to me.

On a recent trip I used the Monocrom 90% of the time. So, sometimes I wonder if I should keep the M.

But, only sometimes ;).

I have the EVF on mine. I find that I hardly use it though. I still prefer the rangefinder for focusing. I have run numerous tests focusing with the EVF, and then looking at the rangefinder and in each instance I had to make a minor adjustment with the rangefinder for perfect focus.

I find that this is lens dependant. Trying to focus a super-wide even wide open using the EVF is an exercise in futility, the DOF is just too great. On the other hand longer lenses are so easy to focus. Non-coupled longer lenses are a joy to use with the EVF.

I wouldn't be without the rangefinder or the EVF.

Without Leica R lenses I would not use EVF. WITH these lenses, however, I bought

three in the meantime (PC Super Angulon, 80-200mm and 250mm) it makes a lot of

sense.

The M is a perfect instrument for many use cases, and - you find used R lenses in

top condition at very reasonable prices, yesterday I bought from Munich Leica Store

the 80-200 mm lens - it looks brand new - for 750 € only......

One more guy being very happy and satisfied with M240

I have never experienced that. No dealer ever - in Germany and Switzerland -

asked for advance payments.......

Be aware, if the dealer files for chapter 11 you will not get back the deposit from

the receiver
