lct Posted December 8, 2013 Share #5 Posted December 8, 2013 Sony makes so good rangefinders that Leica plans to concentrate on a new reflex system called "R" but it's just a rumour.
mirekti Posted December 8, 2013 Share #6 Posted December 8, 2013 I've been owning this camera for seven months. There were and are some issues, but nothing big, and most was or will be corrected in the firmware. There are two things that bother/ed me a bit. IR filter on the sensor is too thin, so some colors in many situations get contaminated. I will solve this issue by Monday when I receive B+W UV/IR cut filters. The second thing is, the files are a bit flat (due to the higher dynamic range), and need more PP. For example, I cannot get my photos look close enough to what I want unless I use Nik Color Efex, and it's Correct contrast and Dynamic contrast filters from Pro Contrast. I also use Soft contrast from Contrast only tab. This leads to many tiff files in my LR catalog, and slows me a bit down. I cannot get this look with the LR only. I wish LR came with a camera profile that would create a bit punchier photos to start with i.e. they should kind of have "Leica look", and if one doesn't like them one could play with the sliders. Many might not like what I wrote here, but this is my personal observance, taste, call it what you want it. In short, this is the best camera I have ever owned. I won't be selling it, and if I knew all of the above I'd still buy this camera.

A better JPEG engine wouldn't hurt but then again, i never shoot JPEG on my M anyway.
pieterpronk Posted December 8, 2013 Share #8 Posted December 8, 2013 Flat files without personality seem to work for me on the MM. But I really dislike it on the M240. I don't use third party plug in, but it's a chore to balance the M240 files. While balancing the MM files is a joy.
Guest Gilgamesh Posted December 8, 2013 Share #9 Posted December 8, 2013 As an aside, I'd be interested in what levels you dial in when importing into LR. I also have the Nik software, but have never really got around to using the settings you refer to. Would you be happy to give me the values you're using both in the LR import and also in the Nik software as I'd be interested in seeing the difference? Thank you. jaapv Posted December 8, 2013 Share #11 Posted December 8, 2013 I guess it simply means that Leica has finally caught up with their delivery times, otherwise they would have been snapped up.
bideford Posted December 8, 2013 Share #12 Posted December 8, 2013 another blind , devoted, faitfhul initiate... no critcism is accepetd Hi Marcello, Thanks for your judgement. My comment was not based upon any criticism of the camera (was there any?) but simply on the genius of your observation that used M240's were now appearing on the market and whether this was at all significant. My humble apologies if this touched a nerve. Best, James

You need to adjust the default import settings on Lightroom to suit the image style that you like. With the M-240 I adjust the following from their zero defaults TONE Contrast: +13 Blacks: +15 PRESENCE Clarity: +10 Vibrance: +17 TONE CURVE Medium Contrast SHARPENING: ZERO NOISE REDUCTION: ZERO LENS PROFILE: Enabled PROCESS: 2012 (Current) No problem with flat files... Naper Posted December 8, 2013 Share #14 Posted December 8, 2013 4-5 in my opinion is not a lot. The question is WHY. How many are for sale for profit, buyers remorse, cant afford, quality?
Guest Gilgamesh Posted December 8, 2013 Share #15 Posted December 8, 2013 I agree. I was intrigued what settings were being applied that fell a little flat in LR5. Doubly interested thereafter in what goes on in the Nik software that "corrects" a flat, since I don't know the software, although I bought it as a package. I'd like to know more. In Basic, I dial down the highlights by -15 but +15 whites, which in combination with a minus -15 in the blacks seems to give a bit of punch. Tone Curve I leave it as Linear but dial in +3, 0, -3,-5 respectively.
mirekti Posted December 8, 2013 Share #16 Posted December 8, 2013 Would you be happy to give me the values you're using both in the LR import and also in the Nik software as I'd be interested in seeing the difference? I put some samples in a new thread over here http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-post-processing-forum/312138-how-do-you-make-your-m240.html#post2575198 as we were going a bit off topic. I simply cannot get this with Lighroom only. Once I do the changes in Nik, I use LR to tweek it further, but many times I don't even touch the LR sliders. ...except the HSL ;-)

My humble apologies if this touched a nerve. Best, James I accept your apologies. "genius" is the man who thought to know "the answer" not the one that asks a "question" and proposes an analysis of a fact. I explain my question for your knowledge: "considering the difficulties in finding a new M240 until october 2013 why actually you can find many people that do not buy an M240 (2-3 on sale in Milan, Italy) and why some people sells his camera ? There is something wrong in this M? Is the competition with Sony a problem for Leica? or it will push Leica to produce a better camera?. That's all.
