bill Posted March 20, 2014 Share #661 Posted March 20, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) ...The upcoming announcement has nothing to do with the X line of cameras; these are different cameras for different customers. The customers will decide that. That's what customers do... Inconvenient, I know. How unreasonable of them. They should be buying overpriced, slow, underspecified, viewfinderless cameras by the bucketload and be properly grateful. I fully expect the Vario to be quietly discontinued within a year, or at least on run-out with no more being made. Leica will eat its own lunch on this one. Advertisement Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Hi bill, Take a look here CEO Alfred Schopf and future products. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
colonel Posted March 20, 2014 Share #662 Posted March 20, 2014 Ok, let's stick with this analogy for a moment. All modern cars achieve 50mph. Most do it with ease. It is well within their capabilities. You don't need your foot flat on the floor. You have more in reserve. You don't need to get out and push. You don't need to use another car if you want to go faster. Car manufacturers don't bring out compact luxury models that run out of steam at 50mph when every other manufacturer is offering better performance more economically. It's 2014... Sent from another Galaxy I'd much rather be in a Volvo XC90 or a BMW X5 at 50mph then a ford focus.

bill Posted March 20, 2014 Share #664 Posted March 20, 2014 I'd much rather be in a Volvo XC90 or a BMW X5 at 50mph then a ford focus. I wouldn't, but that's because I can't abide soft-roaders (for the record, I wouldn't drive a Focus either*). I would rather drive a car built to do the job than to match an aspiration. Style over substance doesn't cut it in cars or cameras... *From your response my extended metaphor clearly left you by the roadside. Never mind. Leica will eat its own lunch on this one. Sent from another Galaxy I'm afraid they are selling too well for that, understandable with good reviews and happy users... Bill, I can understand that somebody doesn't need or like a product, I do so with many products. But I am unable to understand the need to go on a public bashing spree.... If I wanted to insult you I could do so far more effectively. I have researched, tried, used and dismissed the Vario for what it is. As to cars... For the benefit of Jaap and others - it is quite straightforward. Leica can and should do so much better than the Vario, in specification and marketing. It pains me to see yet another misfire aimed at the cash-rich, discernment-poor who will worship anything with a red dot. For goodness' sake Leica, WAKE UP! andybarton Posted March 20, 2014 Share #668 Posted March 20, 2014 Strange, given that the photographs I have seen from the Vario on here seem to be technically very good.
gyoung Posted March 20, 2014 Share #669 Posted March 20, 2014 Well on here isn't much of a yardstick, anything can look good at the sort of res used in browsers. Look at what paople are putting up on other forums using the A7 and all sorts of old lenses which I know are pretty awful for anything serious Gerry Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
gyoung Posted March 20, 2014 Share #670 Posted March 20, 2014 At 50mm equivalent fully open its a f5.1. Probably the slowest lens ever build for this format. And certainly when considering the price point. At 50mph many cars feel competent and resonably comfortable on the road. With other words, the UD 3500 (with EVF and Grip) XV performs where plenty of other makes can do it without a sweat as well. I was responding to Bill's assertion that the Vario is a poor camera, which, from what I have seen, it is not. I have no opinion of the A7, as I have not looked at one. stunsworth Posted March 20, 2014 Share #673 Posted March 20, 2014 Strange, given that the photographs I have seen from the Vario on here seem to be technically very good. That's what all the reviews I've read say. They often mention the price and small aperture as being problematic, but I've not seen a review that didn't say the image quality was excellent. bill Posted March 20, 2014 Share #674 Posted March 20, 2014 Andy, you know as well as I do that one can take a "technically very good" photo with any number of cameras more easily and more effectively than one can with a Vario. If one is happy with paying over the odds for a slowwww lens, mediocre handling, pedestrian performance and the alternative of a less-than-state-of-the-art rear screen or a less-than-state-of-the-art clip on viewfinder then by all means compromise and buy a Vario. As an aside it will be very interesting to see how many of the current Vario "fans" dump it like a hot cake in the next 12 months for the T... I should run a book. Enough; I apologise for the thread hijack. Let's get back to speculating and hoping about what is to come than about past mistakes.
bill Posted March 20, 2014 Share #675 Posted March 20, 2014 I was responding to Bill's assertion that the Vario is a poor camera, which, from what I have seen, it is not. ...It is not a bad camera per se. It is in comparison with its competition and with market expectations in 2014 that it doesn't cut the mustard. ... Oh, and by the way, I didn't drag the Vario into this thread... andybarton Posted March 20, 2014 Share #676 Posted March 20, 2014 I think that you are in danger of worrying too much about baubles and bangles and not enough about the quality of the output.
bill Posted March 20, 2014 Share #677 Posted March 20, 2014 Quite the opposite - you know me better than that. If it was all about the quality of the output we would all be using large format. I use (Leica and other) cameras that I enjoy and that deliver, not that I have to justify or apologise for.

For goodness' sake Leica, WAKE UP! Rivivalist preaching doesn't make a camera. And there is no obligation for people to justify or apologise for enjoying a camera and thinking and that it delivers. bill Posted March 20, 2014 Share #679 Posted March 20, 2014 Rivivalist preaching doesn't make a camera... Neither does unswerving, unquestioning devotion. Leica staved off disaster - just - with the M8 and did incredibly well with the M9. But they cannot rely upon past glories - ancient and recent - to make up for the mis-steps. They NEED to get it right.
UliWer Posted March 20, 2014 Share #680 Posted March 20, 2014 Are you really sure they NEED you reminding them? If I thought it was only me who knows and others stayed in sin and ignorance, I might use your capital letters.
