Come again! ... :)

The MP, unlike the M6, has a black paint finish.

The MP has a knurled rewind knob instead of the M4 and M6's much faster folding rewind crank.

The MP's wind on lever is less comfortable than the articulated lever on the M4 and M6.

Always pleased to be of help...

I find that the M4's old style wind and rewind lever and crank leads me to feel that, in comparison the MP is more of one piece of metal, with no jointed bits hanging [ not literally ] off.

For me the MP would be the one to get, if possibly with the M2 frames which are very concise and clear, with the added very real benefit of it having the only 90mm frame that has corners to it, making composition much more definite, IMO.

I have owned all M models and have settled for an MP and an M2, plus 2 little CLs, but have to admit that the MM is reeling me in.

Hi Pete,

What I meant was that if you already have an MP (or buy used) and change the skin/frame lines it is cheaper than buying a brand new a la cart with the same configuration. Of course this does not apply to viewfinder magnifications other than 0.72, or if you like something other than the standard top plate Leica logo.

Thanks to everyone who commented on this "dilemma". I've hopefully just closed a deal on an MP that I'll send for modification. My (almost) perfect film M. I'll post a photo in a few couple of months if all pans out well. :D. Now to consider selling my M9P!! I love film!

Congratulations.

M3, 2, 4, 6, 7 or P, it really doesn't matter. Every one of them is a much nicer camera than the bloated and unbalanced digital Ms.

I guess, by this standard, the Leica screwmounts must be waifish supermodels sauntering on stilettos down the catwalk. Oh, and the M5, Queen of Lard.

No to the first. Yes to the second.

I don't think it's particularly controversial to suggest that, say, an M4 feels more comfortable and well balanced than an M9, in addition to having a much nicer shutter release action. Leica's transition from film to digital has been fairly clumsy, which isn't surprising for a small company with no great expertise in electronics.

My MP has arrived, and I must say I'm very pleased. It is smoother than my previous MP and feels tight and solid compared to my M2s. My M2's are smooth but somehow feel a little sloppy compared to the MP. Now to send it to Leica for some new clothes.

Now in case Pico comes around this thread ;) ...

I'm just gelous, because I'm an ignoramus, happy with any a black M6 TTL 0.85 that appeared a couple of years ago on ebay in a 50km radius and passed the functional test.

Did I make any changes to them both? Yup: a winder underneath :p .

Sorry if it makes you

But my sincere congratulations to your new camera!

Maybe one day... one day I'll graduate to be a connaisseur, too.

Cheers,

Simon

I know, but we do buy equipment with our eyes as well as our head. I'm lucky that I don't want to take photos with a long lens, or macro shots. The M is perfect for what I want to do, and they look really nice too. DigiSLRs really aren't very attractive, and the new Nikon DF looks horrible from behind. Aren't we lucky! And, if you're going to spend the foreseeable future with a particular type of camera, why not make it your perfect camera and attractive?

One might use a fruit crate as a coffee table, but it's hard to understand how someone who has an interest in the aesthetic can deny any interest in the appearance of a tool they use to create "art".

Congratulations on your new arrival. Presumably when it arrives back from Solms, we will all be able to admire the result? As the saying goes, 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' etc etc, as is design perfection. My take on such topics (MP alc, 0.58 vf, black saddle leather). Dream fulfilled!

This is a problem with the M3 and M2. I had a separation happen with my M2 and it happened with no warning. I ended up selling it as is and before it became completely unusable. It's also why I personally tend to stay away from those models. They are definitely great cameras, but they're just a bit too old now and I need to something to use every day and not worry about.

afaik, CRR Luton is the only person who is willing to repair and resilver existing rangefinders after they've been done in with balsam glue degradation. Here are the details: M2/3/4 Rangefinder Restoration

You might consider asking for an estimate from Luton before you decide. I know that DAG and Sherry Krauter use either a donor M2/M3 and will replace the rangefinder that way, or install a later version (as Solms does.)

I recently bought my first Leica. An M3. It had the same problem 10 years ago and the owner hat the viewfinder replaced by a 0.85x. The version without the 75mm lines. So I have 35mm and 135mm together and single frames for 50mm and 90mm.

I know, that most people love the M3 for it's special viewfinder, yet I really like the camera.

Leica offered to install an original viewfinder, yet they warned the owner back then, that they are new old-stock and that the newest of them that they have in stock is more than 30 (by now more than 40) years old. You just have to expect, that although it might look great now, it could be damaged in 3 years, so they obviously do not recommend to install them in the old cameras.

for me, the weight, balance, and size of the m4 is perfection for my hands. feel no need to pay up for the mp. that being said, they are all lightsealed boxes where the outcome depends on you, the lens, and the film (plus some pp). in other words, if it feels great in your hands so much the better .... for me its the m4 ... and oh yes, i love the sound of the shutter.

  • 6 years later...

Thought I would add my contribution to this old thread after owning a Silver 1968 M4 for many years and recently acquiring a mint 2003 BP MP:

They are both excellent!

I have the M4 paired with a 50mm lens (on account of the slightly larger 50mm tramlines) and the MP paired with a 35mm lens.

My advice: get both 🙂
