make 2 versions of the M, a high tech M with all gadgets and a purist M, with no bells or frills, just a pure photography tool with an outstanding sensor (M9P style).

Make 2 versions of the M a pure new modern and useful camera and an oldish one for outdated photographers :D

But it won't be an M....

For some it is necessary to have an optical coincidence range/viewfinder in order to be an M.

For others, an M-mount is a defining factor in practice. Remembering of course that any means which permits focussing with practical accuracy is actually a "range finder", since it inherently determines the distance to subject. It will probably become possible to represent focus peaking with a coincidence patch, all done with software in the EVF system.

So, maybe it would be an M. Particularly if Leica make it and call it an M.

They won't. M=Messsucher.

I personally don't care about a label, but I do care about an optical viewfinder. And so does Leica.

I would go for an APS EVIL 16 to 20 Mp camera with M mount in a flash, though. It would be less elaborate than my M and less troublesome than the A7 for my R lenses. And a good backup for my M too.

What do you want in the next digital M?

1) no rangefinder

2) the best EVF build-in possible

3) auto focus

4) easier way to access to battery and SD card

5) a 135 f/2 or 2.4

6) a 43mm Noctilux or Summilux :-)

you'll be wanting a built-in flash as well I expect! Very useful for getting attention while shooting in the street and in dimly lit night clubs. Perfect for completely changing the mood of your image. Perfect and in-focus snapshots without any skills.

Leica will have a hard time incorporating two lenses into a new M (5 and 6). I vote for a continuation of the M lens mount instead :D. Sorry, couldn't resist :)

Is a "messsucher" necessarily an optical parallax coincidence messsucher? Perhaps someone with a sufficient command of German can tell us. Leica Camera make several rangefinder devices which are opto-electronic rather than optical parallax: Leica Camera AG - Sportoptik - Geovid

I agree with you that it doesn't matter what its called. But I'd like it to be full frame EVIL with native M mount. The icing on the cake would be an R-M adapter that somehow conveyed R lens info to the camera, and then on to the exif. (I know, I know, if it takes them over a year to make a purely mechanical R-M, how long then for a magical electronic one...)

Image stabalization? - maybe, as longs as it doesn't make a sound (and I mean NONE at all). I love how quiet it is working with the M.

Maybe some more weather-proof lenses to attach to my weather-proof M240...?

Other than that I'll take an intervalometer, and shaving a few hundred grams off the weight (while maintaining structural integrity and overall feel - not sure how they would do this, but a guy can dream :-).

An ISO-dial would also be cool - It can have an A-function like the shutter dial (let's not get into that discussion again - I like the option to have an aperture priority mode)

The worst they could do is to remove the OVF. I would personally never buy a Leica without an OVF.

it was the only small FF system for many years + build and optical qualities things are changing just now.

I dont know what to do ... I shall maybe sell my M in January.

Your M is still the smallest by most measures! I'd hang on to it. You already mentioned the optics. It will be a very long time before there exists small lenses of M quality. Yes, optics technology does change. But, what stays the same is the expense to make good optics. Even more expense if, you want the optics to be small.

Hang in there. You own the best optics and one of the top 5 sensors... combined with Leica's technical intellectual knowledge of how to make great images come out of a "system." The new Sony FF EVIL cameras are a marvel of modern consumer electronics, for sure... but, they are not a complete photographic system.

It is exactly the reason why I hesitate, my 50 Summilux will not be AF on the Sony

and there is actually nothing in this size

You are thinking exactly like I am thinking. The Sony 50mm Otus is too big. The 50mm FE 1.8 is big. Yes, it is AF. This is good. My 50 Summilux FLE is AF. This is good. I do want small lenses. I returned the A7R.

and to get a full system as small and as good as Leica it will maybe take 5 or 10 years

The only possibility is if Leica does it , maybe a moving sensor for AF ?
