RITskellar Posted October 8, 2016 Share #144 Posted October 8, 2016 Very original tattoo. Thank you! It's based on the glass optics in the Summicron 35 pre-ASPH v4 lens. My favorite. The morse code running through it says "focus on the beauty"

Paulus Posted January 2, 2017 Author Share #148 Posted January 2, 2017 Anyone has experience with the GPS in the extra grip on the M 240. Does it work well?
Peter Kilmister Posted January 2, 2017 Share #149 Posted January 2, 2017 Paulus, It works ... just, if you are in a position to latch onto the satellite signal and your camera is switched on for long enough. This is not unusual with GPS devices. I have a Garmin watch for distances to the green on golf courses. The time it takes until it latches on to the satellite can be a couple of minutes. Maybe at the Tropic of Cancer these things would work instantaneously?
Guest Posted January 3, 2017 Share #150 Posted January 3, 2017 I have used it in North Vietnam during the last month and found that it takes between 1-7 minutes to acquire the signal. I took about 2k pictures and have 90% with location information. The pictures without GPS coordinates I usually can "repair" as I shoot many pictures at or near the same location and eventually the signal is recorded. Your miles will vary. I have often taken a marker picture with my phone which usually has better GPS tracking as it is on all the time. As expected there was no GPS signal in limestone caves ;-)

With most energy efficient mode this app hardly makes any dent in battery life for iPhone6 in entire day of running and provides accurate enough GPS tracks that can be applied to pictures later in LR. Simple drag and drop. I have even used this app in the plane (it simply uses GPS signal, phone is in airplane mode) and used GPS coordinates for the pictures taken from airplane window. Makes identifying landmarks so much easier later on. Camera GPS will never catch on to phone GPS in responsiveness and flexibility.
Bill Livingston Posted January 3, 2017 Share #152 Posted January 3, 2017 I wasn't aware of that app. Just downloaded it. If it works as well as you suggest, that's great value at £2.29 I'm off to LA on Thursday morning and then a road trip for a week or so around LV and Yosemite, SF and back to LA. Good test for it! Thank you...

Thank you... You won't be disappointed. I use the Standard mode and is enough for me. I don't need more precision than that and get great battery life (almost no impact on iPhone6 for whole day but few %). Also note that I don't use apps' mechanism to geo tag. Instead I export the track in .gpx format (to dropbox or mail) and then use LR to apply the geo tags to the set of pictures. It is quite easy. Just look at LR's documentation. Simple drag and drop. See screenshot below: The mode I use. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Bill Livingston Posted January 3, 2017 Share #156 Posted January 3, 2017 (edited) Thanks... (and I see you have the two partners notifications too...) Fine... so I guess it is simply taking the time of the photo and correlating it with the time of the geotag...? Pretty simple then. Just have to make sure the clock on my phone agrees with the clock on my camera then... Edited January 3, 2017 by Bill Livingston
jmahto Posted January 3, 2017 Share #157 Posted January 3, 2017 Thanks... (and I see you have the two partners notifications too...) Fine... so I guess it is simply taking the time of the photo and correlating it with the time of the geotag...? Pretty simple then. Just have to make sure the clock on my phone agrees with the clock on my camera then... I don't worry about the clock since it can be very easily shifted in LR. In fact whenever I have changed my camera date/time based on the timezone, I have messed up. In international trip, I might take pictures in 3 different time zones in the same day and I will need to change time three times in my camera. If I forget, then it gets messed up. My simple solution is not to touch the time in camera at all. I simply keep my camera date/time as of my permanent time zone and later (after importing into LR) shift the times of pictures in batches based on where they are. This is very flexible. The geo tags (from gpx file) will match with the shifted time in LR (and not original time). It is that simple. .... and I don't worry about partner notification. They always want me to spend $$ therefore I ignore them.
pop Posted January 3, 2017 Share #158 Posted January 3, 2017 Thanks... (and I see you have the two partners notifications too...) Fine... so I guess it is simply taking the time of the photo and correlating it with the time of the geotag...? Pretty simple then. Just have to make sure the clock on my phone agrees with the clock on my camera then... At the end of your trip you photograph the screen of your phone showing a digest of your trip as a QR code. You do so with every camera you carried on the trip. You then feed all your pictures from that trip to the counterpart of the GPS4CAM on the Mac or Win PC, and it takes care of any time offset. Just don't change the clock in the camera during the trip. I don't know if it handles DNG files, though. Otherwise it's a neat piece of software. There are other ways of correlating GPX files (i.e. GPS tracks) but GPS4CAM is the neatest, IMHO.
Peter Kilmister Posted January 3, 2017 Share #159 Posted January 3, 2017 Good luck on all these holidays. Have fun and enjoy yourselves. Meanwhile, in northern Europe we'll all freeze ... except in the Alps where there is a lack of snow. 19C forecast for Malaga tomorrow. No wonder Polar bears are in trouble. Bill Livingston Posted January 3, 2017 Share #160 Posted January 3, 2017 (edited) Pop, this point about DNG. I usually ONLY shoot in DNG... So I will need to use DNG+JPG in order for this to work? I don't actually understand why that should be... but I will believe you. (I seem to be going through a particularly gullible period at the moment... this could simply be just another of those moments ) Apologies in advance for what is probably a very naive question...
