Rick Posted July 3, 2014 Share #4501 Posted July 3, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) If, you can live with 35mm focal length, nothing touches the RX1 series. The A7s looks like less dynamic range, less color bit depth, 1/2 the pixels (still important), but it does unlock a whole bunch of blotchy high ISO settings that, for me, I'd never use. I don't go to night clubs much anymore and when I am at a jazz club I'm there to enjoy the music and my friends, not take pictures... just me. The M still fits in as the best body for my Leica lenses, both M and R.

zlatkob Posted July 3, 2014 Share #4502 Posted July 3, 2014 The M is best, but at $1500 to $2500 the A7/A7r/A7s variations sure are attractive. The high ISO of the A7s looks like it's about one stop better than my Canons, which are already very good.

Hey, when you put it that way... $ As a casual shooter at this point in the evolution of cameras, I don't think I'd buy an M system again. I just happen to have all the lenses I could never use... so I'll hang around Leica for a while. Not being a professional that needs Canon lenses and bodies I'd probably just buy an RX1 for travel and family and carrying around. If, I wanted to have multiple lenses I'd go for one of these Sony A7 series cameras and native Sony lenses as they come out. TravelSnapper
Washington Posted July 3, 2014 Share #4504 Posted July 3, 2014 Shot in a hurry, no editing other than size. I didn't understand your comment about being selective with wide angle lenses on the a7. 15mm used, wide open and fully closed at f22. Green cast on truck picture as I was in a rush and didn't change the balance from the basement shot..... they are only examples. Welcome, dear visitor! jedi996sps Posted July 3, 2014 Share #4505 Posted July 3, 2014 I didn't understand your comment about being selective with wide angle lenses on the a7. . I have the A7r and find that i only wish to use it with my 75cron and not 50lux or 28cron as i am not satisfied that the 50lux edge detail is acceptable to me and the 28cron corner is just mush. When the A7r works well, it really does deliver. Sadly for me, it is with only one of the leica lenses that have. Image attached was with 75cron. Welcome, dear visitor! Steve P Posted July 4, 2014 Share #4506 Posted July 4, 2014 I didn't understand your comment about being selective with wide angle lenses on the a7. The overwhelming majority of evidence, reviews, articles and images all over the web supports the fact that M lenses wider than 50mm produce inconsistent results on the Sony A7 and A7r. Surely this is no longer a controversial point? You're free to disagree of course but I think the issues are widely known and almost universally acknowledged. Based on the examples I've so far seen, there is cause for optimism that the A7s might have improved these issues. Time will tell.
janki Posted July 4, 2014 Share #4507 Posted July 4, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) And pretty soon we will have a model A7 c, where c stands for curved sensor. As stated in the notice: “There is no vignetting and no aberration in corners.” But “…………it’s extremely difficult to design zoom lenses for.” First image taken with the Sony curved sensor! | sonyalpharumors And some time after the A7-c is here; we can imagine that Leica will follow up with a T mount version with the same sensor and a brand new series of FF, AF-c lenses. It is definitely enough spending money on over the next few years.

Indeed it does! Among A7r and A7 users the WATE is often singled out as the best wide option of them all. As for 12mp, if it means I can use my M lenses with fewer image quality compromises then I believe I can live with fewer pixels, and I've never shot video, 4k or otherwise, in my life. koray Posted July 6, 2014 Share #4511 Posted July 6, 2014 If I could have only one, I would prefer the Summicron 35 V4 over my other 35s. Polygamer, you seem to be the best person to answer my question. I also have the same 35mm, plus a Summicron 50 v4 (tabbed), plus an Elmarit-M 90 (last version). I gave up on the hope that one day I can have a Leica M digital rangefinder. Too expensive for me. These days I am enjoying pairing a NEX-6 with my Leica lenses. Yes, it is a chore to focus, stop down. But gorgeous results when nailed. So, A7 is on my radar. Financially and reliability-wise, A7 makes sense to me. Have you got any sample images that are shot at various apertures and ranging focus distances? Thanks in advance, Koray P.S. Never mind, I found the samples thread that you wonderfully contributed. I would still be very interested in your opinion as an M9 owner on A7 and the lenses I own.
Guest polygamer Posted July 8, 2014 Share #4512 Posted July 8, 2014 Hi, this is how I do it. Typically, when I get a new lens or camera body, I do a quick-and-dirty trial run, supporting the camera on the window frame and using different apertures when taking pictures of the street with neighbours' houses and a glimpse of the countryside. These pictures are rich in detail and show me how to use the lenses, or leave them on the shelf. Now, the Summicron 2/35 V4 works beautifully on the A7. I have just come back from a holiday in the mountains, where I used it frequently. Your Summicron 2/50 should also work perfectly on the A7 (I have the current version without tab.). I have the latest 90 Elmarit (with sliding hood), too. For theses lenses, I would recommend the A7 without reservations or disclaimers. Enjoy! P.S.: I also had my M9 with me on holiday. I also used it, because I like it so much haptically. However, the A7 with live view, large, flexible display and exposure compensation wheel is very easy to use. In terms of sharpness your samples look pretty good to me. This is what I wanted to hear. My major concern was the dreadful blur at infinity. I rarely shoot infinity wide open anyway. I use my wide angle lenses mostly stopped down to f/5.6-8. Plus AFAIK Summicron 35v4 has a deeper field curvature, which leads to softer corners even on film (and M9?). So A7 looks like a viable alternative now. Again, many thanks for your help! Koray
Guest polygamer Posted July 9, 2014 Share #4514 Posted July 9, 2014 Hi, Summicron 2/35 V4 at f8 on the A7. The Klein-Walsertal seen from the Fellhorn. I am satisfied with the IQ. Of course, one must focus and cannot rely on the metering ring. I did not raise the basic question why you want the A7 if you have the NEX-6 ( I also have). The NEX-6 is hassle-free with Leica M mount lenses. So, if you are not after FF and only want to have your favourite focal lengths supported, you could have the 35mm (roughly) experience with the ZEISS Biogon 2,8/25 or the Leica Elmar 3,8/24 ASPH (I have both) on the NEX-6 due to the crop factor. Hi again, very good point. As I told earlier, I am thrilled with the results of M lenses on NEX-6, and Biogon looks promising. But it is just that I want to use my beautiful Leica glass to their full extent, without crops. I love the renderings of the 35, 50, and 90 on film, but processing and scanning has become a tiresome chore for me. I feel that full frame is the way to go. I don't shoot that often to warrant an M9 or M-E purchase, so A7 should do. It will be bulkier than NEX-6, I will miss the tiny SELP1650; but when compared, the Leica images stand miles ahead, well worth it. My first ILC was a NEX-3N, which I got new for $500. Now after one year it is hardly worth $250. It looks like A7 is following a similar trend in the second hand market, depreciating very quickly. This time I am wiser and will try scoring a second hand A7. Thanks again! K.
ccorey Posted July 9, 2014 Share #4516 Posted July 9, 2014 Owning both the A7 and A7r I can find no practical difference...... I belive it would be the samewith the A7s..... enough is too much. TomB_tx Posted July 9, 2014 Share #4517 Posted July 9, 2014 I got an A7 last week, not so much for my M lenses (my M9 is fine for M and LTM), but for my large collection of 1960s - 1980s manual focus SLR lenses that have no FF digital native support (Leica R, Pentax, Canon FL-FD, etc). I picked up cheap adapters for Leica R, M, LTM; Pentax K & M42; Canon FL, and even Nikon F. So far I'm very pleased. The viewfinder is very good for precise focus even without the available focusing aids, and the old SLR lenses work much better than I expected. Yes, Leica M wides do have corner smearing, but I have SLR wides for that. I'm very pleased with how the little Pentax-M 20mm f4.0 does for an ultra-wide. I couldn't tell how good it was on film. My M-mount Nokton 35 f1.4 is sharper in the major part of the image than on my M9 (corners excepted), probably because I can nail focus better in spite of the focus shift. With the electronic 1st curtain vibration is not an issue, and noise is no worse than my film SLRs. It meets my needs for a digital solution for my orphan SLR lenses. Guest polygamer Posted July 11, 2014 Share #4518 Posted July 11, 2014 Hi, I agree with your rational approach. Use the A7 as a complementary camera, and enjoy what it can do - and have other cameras for situations where it fails. A picture like this would be most difficult to take with my M9.
