Anyone else having problems with handholding shutter speeds ?

Took a whole load of pics with my 50/2.8 collapsible yesterday at 1/60.......

Hardly any are in focus due to shake ... or similar......

With an M body I can manage 1/30 with no issues and often less if I am careful.

Is it the shutter rattling the pixels ???

The Sony shutter is not only loud, it has a heavy action.

You are better served by at least doubling shutter speed to your focal length. It was prevalent with the NEX as well.

I would think that using the electronic first curtain on the A7 would put any shutter vibration after the exposure.

Down res the files to M240 size, or M9 if applicable and compare motion blur then.

In my experience there isn't "more", you can just see it. I had to up my min shutter speed going from M9 -> M240 and I've had to do it again with the A7R.

A plea for moderation, let's try keep this discussion semi-Leica oriented.

In here, I don't want to read about how good Sony files are with ANY other lens than a Leica lens.

As a long time adapted Sony user, I don't even talk about, let alone post photos I took with my much closer to Leica Rokkor-M 28 on this forum.

Completely non-Leica photographs are indeed not permitted on this forum. However, in the spirit of the discussion, I decided to let them ride.

Even so, please do observe the rules of the forum and post your photographs with other than Leica lenses in a Sony forum please. You can always refer to them in this thread.

I see most of what is being posted here as a little different situation. The commonality of the thread is that the Sony A7® with M-E adaptor can mount our non-Leica lenses we have previously adapted to the M-mount.

For example: Some posters have adapted non Leica lenses to M camera mount like, the Canon .95. They have posted in the past photos with these non-Leica lenses on their M camera. Now we have a camera that is not Leica that can take the same lens. It is interesting, for me, to see how the Sony works with lenses we have used on our Leica M cameras.

(Obviously some of the posts don't fall under this interpretation.)

This is really sad.

PS. How about ZM and VM lenses? Are they also not tolerated?

Surely it must be relevant to compare Leica kit with non-Leica kit.

Otherwise people will have see a Leica version here and then hare off to another forum and see the brand x version there.

I see that Jaap has a tricky job on this one - and your forebearance is very much appreciated. However this is now an almost 200 page thread.

Something to be said for recognising the culture of this particular thread and letting it run its course?

I am a long time Leica to Sony adapter, and while 3rd party M mounts (ZM, VM, Minolta M, or screw mount to M variants) are one thing, I didn't post photos that I took with a Nikon lens on a Sony body in a Leica forum.

If you adapted a Hassleblad lens to an S, or a 8mm fisheye Nikkor to an M, cool, talk about it all you want, just keep a Leica connection.

That said, I personally refrain from posting images that weren't made with Leica glass or cameras in this Leica forum. Those are the rules of this place, rules that I didn't write.

You can do what ever you like...

Perhaps the whole thread should be moved to the Bar.

But now that the camera is physically available, the results garnered from Leica R and M glass should be what's discussed in here, not Nikon or Olympus or Pentax, or whatever else you can clamp to the front of it.

Once again, you can do whatever you like....

How about some photos!?! Here are images from a few lenses, some known to have "issues" with the A7r. Ran the 35mm and 21mm through Flat Field plugin for LR5. I'm very happy.

Summilux 50mm ASPH - GASP! Not at f/1.4 but at f/5.6! (Even the thumbnails from this lens jump out at you)

Summicron 35mm f/2 @ f/2 (ver IV) - who needs corners when you have f2?

Voigtlander 21mm f/4 @ f/8 - Vertical Panorama - no issues with correcting the vignette.

I have a few friends who were very quick to order the A7R and have now received them. They were eager to use the camera with their M Leica lenses. Across the board, they are expressing disappointment--one is even on the verge of sending his back--in large measure due to the amount of vibration from the shutter. Part of the problem is that with a 36 MP sensor, any amount of vibration is going to be highly evident. All are experiencing a large proportion of unsharp images when hand holding. The other issue they're experiencing, which I know has been addressed here and elsewhere, is pixel smearing at the edges, particularly in the corners, of images when using M wides from 35mm on down. The Sony 35mm f/2.8 is producing good images that are sharp corner to corner.

After being initially ready to jump in, I'm definitely putting this purchase on hold.

Well I think that Jaap's soft-touch moderation is perfectly positioned to keep discussions on course, keep the forum relevant to its theme and to maintain the sense of community.

I think that your style of challenge contributes nothing to the thread and is calculated merely to put moderators on the spot and to wreck the good feeling of the exchange.

Hi Brent,

That reaction is understandable, but I think some reactions to this camera are a little extreme. After three weeks or so, I have learned three things about using the A7R with Leica glass:

(1) You need to be careful about what lenses you use - not because there is anything inherently wrong with the camera or the sensor, but because Leica is the only camera maker which makes cameras built to deal with all (or almost all) Leica M mount lenses in their back catalogue.

It would be wrong to say that the A7R has problems with Leica wides. The WATE and the 21 Summilux work well, the 28 Summicron is okay (not great, but okay) and the 35 Summilux FLE seems fine. All my longer lenses are great with the camera.

(2) Focussing is critical, and the focus peaking is not as accurate as a properly calibrated rangefinder. However, if you are using wider apertures, all you need to do is either focus bracket or focus wide and stop down. It just needs care.

(3) Shutter blur is a problem with any sensor of this resolution - we had the same discussions here when the D800E came out. You need to get into the habit of using a faster shutter than you might be used to with the M9, or a tripod. I instinctively avoid using 1/8000 as my experience with mirror slap with my F5 has put me off - that's probably less of a problem with the A7R.

So, my view is that half the problems people are complaining about are inherent in a 36 MP sensor in this format. I go through the same considerations with my D800E (though focusing is less of a problem with that - I still use a tripod more often than I do with my Leicas).

Cheers

John

Nice snaps of my home city by a foreigner ;)

PM me if you want to catch up if we can arrange it.

Hi Mark,

Was in and out reasonably quickly for a conference. Would like to catch up - perhaps next time.

Cheers

John

PS - this one was easier to focus
