Which only means that some people were looking to get an M for all the wrong reasons…

Certainly, but there are some people who are tired from waiting, and the arbitrary pricing enforced by the local importer that is 1300$ higher than what the price is supposed to be including vat and taxes.

Hi..

I plan to use my Noctilux Lens 50mm 1.0 with my new Sony A7.

But I wonder that which adapter is the best solution for this combination.

The other day, someone advised me that Helicoid adapter is good for reducing minimum focal distance. It however makes some focal problem when it is on infinitive focal distance.

As you know, Leica M lens has minimum 1meter focal minimum distance. It is very annoying for snapshot. That's why I consider Helicoid type for my use.

I think that Novoflex is the one of the best option in terms of quality built. I have no idea that this adapter from Novoflex is Helicoid type or not. There is no explanation about Helicoid.

Novoflex Adapter Sony/Minolta AF Objektive an Leica M Kameras - LEM/MIN - AF NT | eBay

Please advise me for further information of Leica M Helicoid adapter for sony.

It would be the best if adapter is Helicoid type without any focal failure in Infinitive distance.

Thanks!!!

Well it seems the M sales are already taking a hit from the A7/r. I have heard from several sources locally that some pre-orders are being cancelled in favor of the A7/r (well, it's november 2013, so it's not supposed to be back-ordered in the first place). If anything, the Sony will allow me to get my M faster, and perhaps at MRSP instead of the inflated rare jewel prices the dealers are asking for.

You are still waiting? I have seen three Ms on the shelf in both colours around Bangkok last week including one at Central Chidlom where they do discount deals with their store loyalty card and 10 months interest-free instalments. :D

The thing is I'm not willing to pay one dollar more than the correct price. I also buy all my stuff at the same place for loyalty reasons (loyalty going both ways).

I have a Novoflex NEX/LEM adaptor and it works just fine.

I also have a Fotodiox Nex/LEM adaptor and it works OK. Releasing lens from adaptor is nit easy and the lens is nit as stable as Novoflex. Sorry I do not have any examples to show of the results.

Another comparison set is up;

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/seznnrgt40oyslj/ZqqTzKde_C/A7R%20vs%20M240%20Cottage

Same scene, aperture sweep, with;

A7R + 35FE

A7R + 35Cron

M240 + 35Cron

A7R + 50Lux

M240 + 50Lux

A7R + 75Cron

M240 + 75 Cron

Focus is on the sat dish centre frame.

I limited the upload to every other stop die to the large number of files it would have been otherwise. Note I did leave the 50Lux at 1.4 (by request) in there so watch that when importing and comparing in a film strip like scenario.

Sorry about the weather.

Well...... not willing to be accused of not trying hard enough with my WA Leica lenses, I have created a selection of Flat Field correctors for use in LR....

..... the process is circuitous to say the least.....

Reference photos wide open, mid aperture, smallest aperture using an expodisk

Load these ARW's to LR ..... batch 'export to DNG' to a folder and rename them all something sensible identifying the lens and aperture......

Load all my duff images to LR ....... Batch convert again by 'export to DNG' to a folder

Re-import all these images back into LR as DNG's

Try the FF corrector on them to find out which is best and send it somewhere sensible away from the dogs dinner of images I now have clogging up LR.

Ok, so it works reasonably well ....... but by no means perfectly ..... and as there is no way of identifying the lens used for the images, unless you keep meticulous records you will end up with even more trial and error.

I want a simple life.

If I keep this camera it will be for 50mm and above and thats it......

Using this camera has made me MORE impressed by what Leica has done with the M..... sticking to DNG and keeping things simple has a lot going for it....

What kind of Voitlander adapter? a solid one, or the latest one just announce weeks ago that can be used for macro (short distance) photo taking?

I susgest using a solid one, that means it just be a solid ring without any moving part. As for one for Macro by move an element forwards, its inner diameter could be smaller due to the built-in helicoid.

Hi Thomas,

It is indeed the 'solid' one, no moving parts. The new close focus one i am advised will be available here in the uk mid december. The new voigtlander one allows for closer focusing, but i would not describe it as macro. Voigtlander have a downloadable pdf on their website which shows what ghe reduced focus distance is for some leica lenses.

My conclusions are the same as with the "Landscape" test.

A7R + 35 FE is a higher quality image than the M240 + 35 Cron at all apertures. Except in the corners where the M240 + 35Cron has the slight edge.

All M lenses I have on the A7R are impressive in the centre 75% of the image and fall down a touch moving out.

I'm looking forward to the 55 FE and future 85 FE. If it continues like the 35FE results then I'm probably looking at moving away from Leica to a cheaper, higher IQ, lighter, more versatile for my style of shooting system.

Yes, but now that i have seen how great the zoom in focus and quality of the evf on the A7r make focusing so much more precise, that is hard to ignore :-)

And simple is very subjective. To me, simple in the M240 sense means backward, incapable of what I require of the tool.

They will be significantly bigger than your M lenses as you know or can suspect it. The Zeiss 55 is already taller than a 90 Leica. Matter of tastes as always.

Then I'm going to be very happy! :D Taller is fine, heavier is not. With a 3 lens kit I'm not size restricted even in FF DSLR, it's the weight.

As I outlined earlier, I don't need "better than" I just need excellent.

Also for reference, to not paint me as anti Leica, or pro Sony. This doesn't replace my X100S as every day 35. It's just too insanely small for the IQ (no hood) and the A7R can't touch it on that. Also if canon were to finally get their shit together I'd be all over that - ESPECIALLY if it incorporates the RF speed light comms into a smaller EVF only body. Even if they had to introduce a new line of lenses for it.

I post a set of images in the link

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/2xaisuhws3vhls1/T8qlGgAxxQ

They are under-exposured to make the vignetting pattern stand out. In the center is a Leica badge to check if the focusing is spot on.

Anybody help identify whether the variation of vigeneeting pattern is due to A signle of a combination of attributes such as:

1. Adapter difference

2.Lense design

3. Focal length

4. Aperture setting

And are they correctable in the post processing.

Thanks!

Of course due to the A7 body being so thin, lenses require a longer barrel or the added space of an adapter - unless the lens design is changed.

In terms of space savings, it makes more sense to have one adapter and smaller lenses rather than have this extension built into every lens. But the idea of using an adapter for some lenses and taking it off for others may not appeal to most people. But that is how people used the Visoflex which was basically a complex lens adapter with mirror... not much different from Sony's LA-EA4 SLT adapter when you come down to it.
