david strachan Posted September 14, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted September 14, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yahoo, now it takes just 1.5 sec to have the image up for reviewing. It usually takes about 4 sec to have the image come up on the LCD. Suddenly for no apparent reason I can almost immediately see my images...it used to be so frustrating waiting so long. This behaviour has just started this morning after having had the camera for the last 7,000 exposures. Â Can esteemed members suggest why this sudden change in behaviour? Â If I click two images immediately, the last exposure comes up near immediately, but takes 12 seconds before the light stops blinking so I can revue the first image...just the same as it did before. Â Ooooh so good to have quick review...I'd thought it was normal behaviour for the M8 to take so long; now in the land of sanity. Advertisement Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 Hi david strachan, Take a look here M8 strange behaviour???. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
david strachan Posted September 14, 2013 Author Share #2 Â Posted September 14, 2013 Same card, same DNG+JPG settings, same everything. Only thing different...I'd been shooting at 1250 ISO for a few shots before I'd turned off the camera the day before. Â STUMPED? cheers Dave S
steamboat Posted September 14, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted September 14, 2013 I know you said you're shooting DNG + JPG, but it sounds like you're now just shooting small JPGs. That's all I can think of. I don't suppose your number of exposures remaining shot up on the counter did it? And you're sure it's not a new Leica M type 240?
david strachan Posted September 14, 2013 Author Share #4 Â Posted September 14, 2013 Hi John the menu shows both formats, so does the counter. I downloaded the recents, and they show both JPG's and DNG's are being written properly. thanks for your input. Â What IS the normal time for the image to appear on the screen, for other M8 users? pgk Posted September 14, 2013 Share #5 Â Posted September 14, 2013 Can esteemed members suggest why this sudden change in behaviour? If you haven't updated the firmware, have you formatted the SD card? Obviously something has changed, so if you haven't changed anything yourself have you plugged the SD card into a new computer, and updated computer, had it in another device? luigi bertolotti Posted September 14, 2013 Share #6  Posted September 14, 2013 Hi John What IS the normal time for the image to appear on the screen, for other M8 users?  cheers Dave S  1 second or so, when I press the "play" button as soon as the image appears (otherwise, the image appears in1 sec, then LCD turns black, red LED blinks for 4 sec or so, then press the "play" and image comes on) : this in the 2 modes I use normally (DNG or JPG fine) : just tried in DNG+JPG and looks about the same; I don't remember exactly if it was different with old firmware releases, but surely never had feeling of slowiness; 2GB SanDisk Ultra II : the one I bought with the camera in 2007... ... never reformatted , only deleted (apart the "L000001" for sentimental reasons ... my first digital shot): I am of the mood "don't change what works fine" and so has been for 9000 Actuations around and hundreds of insertions in the PC. lct Posted September 14, 2013 Share #7 Â Posted September 14, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) About 1s in dng + jpg fine or basic mode whatever slow or fast the cards may be. Your 4s time was not normal at all though. You've formatted your card since then i guess. If you didn't i would do it anyway. You might wish to use SD Formatter in the first place and format the card afterwards in the camera.
david strachan Posted September 14, 2013 Author Share #8 Â Posted September 14, 2013 Thanks for your replies Paul, Luigi and lct... I use a Sandisk Extreme30MB/s 8GB. It continues to work well and is fast in all my Canon Powershots and Canon DSLR's. It's the same card for the last six months. Â I format in camera periodically, never in computer. Rebuilt my computer two months ago to Windows 7 Pro after 12 years on XP Pro. I've had the camera since March at which time I installed the latest firmware update...which incidentally stopped the "red line effect" permanently. Thousands of images further on, it appears to have changed it's behaviour, yet has been totally reliable in all those shots. I never use "c" mode, often use "timer" mode for long exposures and for daytime tripod shots. Â I am happy to see images immediately (1-1.5 secs). It is reacting pretty well as Luigi says. If I press "play" immediately after tripping the shutter I get a v brief flash of plain grey screen, and then black screen, and have to wait till light stops blinking before I can review the image (using "play")....I presume this is usual??? Â Thanks for your help fellows. Â cheers Dave S
jaapv Posted September 14, 2013 Share #9 Â Posted September 14, 2013 If you use your card in all different cameras you can expect all kinds of strange effects.
lct Posted September 14, 2013 Share #10 Â Posted September 14, 2013 ...If I press "play" immediately after tripping the shutter I get a v brief flash of plain grey screen, and then black screen, and have to wait till light stops blinking before I can review the image (using "play")....I presume this is usual???... No it is not sorry. I suggest that you format your card with SD Formatter in the first place and again in the camera.
jaapv Posted September 14, 2013 Share #11 Â Posted September 14, 2013 And after that keep the cards for one camera in that one camera.
david strachan Posted September 15, 2013 Author Share #12 Â Posted September 15, 2013 Um, a misunderstanding. I've been using the exact same card in my M8 since I bought the camera. My other Canons have the same brand and spec cards, which have always worked faultlessly. I did not take my M8 card and try it in my Canons. lct Posted September 15, 2013 Share #13 Â Posted September 15, 2013 OK Dave but your card does not behave normally hence the advices above.
david strachan Posted September 15, 2013 Author Share #14 Â Posted September 15, 2013 Did the SD Formatter and image comes up 1-1.5 sec as before. All going well thanks for the info. Â cheers Dave S
