Tinchohs Posted September 2, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 2, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I'm about to get my new Leica M and have a couple of questions for those of you already using it. (1) Have you found that the thumb rest in the camera is enough in terms of comfort and grip, or for those of you used to the thumbs-up in priori models, it's a must have? (2) Have any of you added the Thumbs-up EP-10S to the new Leica M? How valuable do you find it? (3) Any of you found a leather half-case for the M that (1) has an LCD cover; (2) allows to be used together with the thumbs-up? Thanks SO much for your guidance. Martin. Advertisement Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Hi Tinchohs, Take a look here Leica M240 and Thumbs-up EP-10S.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ananda Posted September 2, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 2, 2013 I have the tumbs up for the M and enjoy it and find it helpful. It also provides a resting place when I put the camera down and keeps the glass screen off the surface.

Thanks a lot. m.
jaapv Posted September 2, 2013 Share #4 Posted September 2, 2013 The main drawback of any thumbs-up like device on the M will be that it interferes with the operation of the thumbwheel, especially with the camera at the eye.
Brett Cambern Posted September 2, 2013 Share #5 Posted September 2, 2013 Don't forget that you will have to take it off to use the EVF. May not be a factor for you but I find that I am using the EVF more than I expected.
lct Posted September 2, 2013 Share #6 Posted September 2, 2013 Must have for both my M8.2 and M240. I find the bodies slippery like soap bars as is and the thumb rest of the M240 is of little help IMHO. Pity that the TU must be removed to use the EVF. One of the reasons why the latter stays in my bag most of the time. Don't ask me what i think of Leica ergonomics in the digital era.
hoppyman Posted September 3, 2013 Share #7 Posted September 3, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I like the TU a lot on my M. I like the new design a lot too. I do not find the factory bump to be enough to be useful. I have no problems at all using the thumb wheel while the TU is still fitted. I guess I seldom use that control when the camera is up to my eye though. I have to take it off if I am shooting flash or with the EVF. I very seldom use the EVF but I do miss the TU when in a studio situation with the flash remote in the hotshoe. I am sure that Luigi and I guess others will or already do make half cases that fit with the TU present. I haven't bothered thus far with mine. rosuna Posted September 3, 2013 Share #8 Posted September 3, 2013 The half protector leather case of Leica is a very good idea. It is not expensive, compared to alternatives, and it improves ergonomics. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

farnz Posted September 3, 2013 Share #10 Posted September 3, 2013 i don't use a Thumbs up, I just put a small strip of black self-adhesive stair grip on the rise over the thumbwheel and it makes the camera much easier to handle and is completely unobtrusive. hoppyman Posted September 4, 2013 Share #11 Posted September 4, 2013 Jaap maybe my thumb is more dextrous than yours I shoot left eyed too which might make the equation better or worse regarding head/hand positions. I do find that the EVF when fitted is awkward when using the normal viewfinder (gets in the way due to its rear protrusion). I only have M lenses so obviously I use the camera differently. Personally I have not found any occasion when the RF was not better for me than EVF regarding focussing, including with the focus peaking option. jaapv Posted September 4, 2013 Share #12 Posted September 4, 2013 Geoff, I shoot righteyed which probably makes the handling quite different, and I have some difficulty with my 105-280 mm lens and the RF Making the thumbwheel needed to adjust the focus aid on the fly. thighslapper Posted September 4, 2013 Share #13 Posted September 4, 2013 The inbuilt rest is minimal help when it comes to stability. I found thumbs-ups useful for my various cameras when uncased, but the extra grip afforded by leather etc. when using a half case made it redundant ..... I also tend to loop the strap round my hand so it is braced against the body for more stability. Unless there's padding behind them (the older models had none) they tend to dent/scratch the body if pressed/knocked. Luigis new M cases have a thumbie cut-out. Mine are all in a box somewhere with a selection of other 'necessary' add-ons that forum members conned me into buying ....
Peter H Posted September 4, 2013 Share #14 Posted September 4, 2013 I have always found a grip infinitely better than a thumbs-up in terms of stability. But really, I prefer my Ms completely naked.
mirekti Posted September 28, 2013 Share #15 Posted September 28, 2013 I've just received Match Techincal Thumbs up, and must admit it serves much better than I expected. As soon as I took the camera in my hands I felt more control over it i.e. less fear I'd drop it. The wheel isn't an issue for me, I can easily move my thumb to it. What I miss the most, there's no any electronics built in so I cannot mount EVF to it. Not sure this would be an easy task to do, but having Thumbie and EVF together would really be great. I'm awaiting Arte di Mano open case too, and it's small grip plus Thumbs up will make the ergonomics much better. My LCD is protected with some antiglare film. Ecar Posted September 28, 2013 Share #16 Posted September 28, 2013 I have a TU on my M8 and M9 and was hoping the camera thumb rest would be sufficient to use it 'naked', but it wasn't. I also realised I actually use the EVF more than expected. Therefore, I went for a Luigi half case (and mine is a tight fit, much better than the M8/M9 cases I bought from him in the past): the combination of the small case bump and the in-built thumb rest are enough to provide a good handling of the camera. Might be different if I had very large hands.

MarkP Posted September 28, 2013 Share #18 Posted September 28, 2013 I used a thumbs up for about 6 months on my M9 when it was new and thought it was really helpful for stability especially having come from film cameras where I was used to having my thumb hooked behind the film advance lever. Then I took the thumbs up off for reasons I can't remember, never missed it so have not used it again. I have a Luigi M9 half-case which I find a bit too rustic, and much prefer the finish and fit of the Leica M case which I think is fantastic. I also have an A&A black leather strap which has been transferred from my M9 which has subtle off-white stitching (Artisan&Artist* Straps) which matched very well with the new Leica case. Fang Posted September 29, 2013 Share #19 Posted September 29, 2013 As an alternative you can use self adhesive Skateboard Grip Tape. Bob. Bob, How does it look like ? As for me, I got the a half case for $79.90 and stuck a silicon button on it. It works well as a thumb grip with also the EVF (in this case a VF). If you have the Thumbs-up, you can't have your EVF Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! It is not expensive, compared to alternatives, and it improves ergonomics. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free I agree. I love the new Typ 240 Protector. It's a real step forward in ergonomics, quality and fit from the M8/9 one, and with the small built in thumb grip on the M, I personally feel no need for the TU (unlike with my M9-P, where I had one). I would also find the TU a pain with the EVF - which I want to be the only thing I ever mount and dismount from the hotshoe of my M.
