But since this thread is about a super expensive hood, I thought I'd ask if that hood does some sort of extra special flare reduction on a lens that is already pretty good in respect to flare. And it's curious too, that Leica sells the lens with a gargantuan lens hood.

I admit I was surprised to see that article. And also the other one stating that this lens is boring. The focal length might feel boring to someone who simply doesn't like a 28mm perspective, but I don't understand how the lens itself can be "boring." Anyway, like LCT says all that matters in the end is what works for each individual.....

Cal, the original big hood of the 28 Summicron and its pairing with the currently sold 28 Summicron is likely simply a matter of economics.

The hood is sold with the Summicron since it's introduction and has been shared with one or two other contemporary lenses.

It is functional, works well and the plastic-injection molds and secondary tools are likely still in good shape as they hardly have reached their tool lives.

It is a sound business decision to keep delivering the current 28 Summicron with that hood therefore.

When Leica updates the 28 Summicron at some point, it will likely transition to the more modern all aluminium designs, we see from the 35/1.4 FLE, 21/3.4 SE, etc …

I like to use the 12466 on the 28/2, as it prevents from things smudging or damaging the front element, when I don't have filters on the lens.

And being frank, considering the costs to buy a 28/2, the costs of the luxury 12466 even at it's now inflated price is a small cost.

The reason about outrage about the luxury hoods cost really boils down to the much less costly available alternatives, which are absolutely fine in their own right.

Let's have a drink on this one:

all that matters in the end is what works for each individual....

I received my new 12466 hood today. It is a really nice accessory. Did I need it? Probably not but I am glad I have it. I will sell my other hood. The 12466 is much easier too not mistake the locking ring for the aperture ring. But do not put a lens cap on your 28 with the 12466 as I did. I have big hands and once it is on, you will have difficulty getting it off with your new expensive hood installed. I even had a filter on the lens and could not work my fingers into there. Oh well :)

And now the problem. Is it normal for the 12466 mounted on the 28 Summicron, to rattle? Mine certainly has a metallic rattle every time I move my camera.

In fact, sometimes this lens hood 12466 is built so tight, that it can not even be plugged in by the sales staff to the Summicron 28mm.

So it happened to me at Leica in Solms, where I wanted to purchase a 12466.

I had to buy another in Frankfurt, which fit immediately but tight enough.
