Guest Gilgamesh Posted July 15, 2013 Share #21 Posted July 15, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Gordon, sure, but my point is that there is nothing of interest in the original post, not to speak of the attitude. If he had in some way discussed the work of Power and Shore and how it inspired of influenced him, that could be interesting. —Mitch/Bangkok Paris au rhythme de Basquiat and Other Poems [download link for book project] (Mallard)".... but I still felt the urge, the need to post, better still, to criticise, to add where no reply is requested, to intellectualise anything possible along the way. Paul J Posted July 15, 2013 Share #23 Posted July 15, 2013 What on earth is the point of going to all that effort of thinking about what you want to write, writing it, correcting it, posting it on a public forum and then ask that nobody to reply to it? What a ridiculous waste of everyone's time! I suggest you do us the favour, in future, by writing "do not reply to this" in the very first line, or even better the subject of the post, so we won't bother to read your pointless post in the first place. Infact, it would probably make more sense to have written "Do not read" as the subject line!

You asked for no replies; hitherto I have respected that request (though since you are posting on a public forum, I don't actually think it's a reasonable one to make). But now you yourself have replied. So it's OK for you to reply to others, but it's not OK for others to reply to you? Absurd. Please don't reply. Photoskeptic Posted July 16, 2013 Share #26 Posted July 16, 2013 Frankly, I think the moderator's should delete this entire thread. How realistic is it to post on an open forum and then say "no comments" and "no responses"? Sheesh, gimme a break. Talk about a WTF moment...
Guest malland Posted July 16, 2013 Share #27 Posted July 16, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Agree that this thread should be deleted, as it contains nothing but nonsense, and doesn't even have an entertainment value.
250swb Posted July 16, 2013 Share #28 Posted July 16, 2013 It should stay, it is a lesson in hubris. Post on a public discussion forum, talk a good photograph, equate himself with well known photographers, sound knowledgable about equipment, then censor comment to make sure his words are forever important and revered, it amounts to nothing more than an ego massage in public. This is what blogs are for, where you can say what you want and if you have any readers they are the ones to ban from commenting and possibly disagreeing because that is your own little world, not a public forum. jaapv Posted July 16, 2013 Share #30 Posted July 16, 2013 Well, deleting is not needed as I see it, but I think we should stop wasting bandwidth here. Oblivion is the best place for it. IkarusJohn Posted July 16, 2013 Share #34 Posted July 16, 2013 Coming from the likes of the brilliant D800 and the G zoom lenses I can tell you that the Leica 50mm f1.4 and the 90mm f2 are producing some subtly superb results ... Nice to hear - I like these lenses too. I am using these lenses both time again in preference to the Nikons and now we're into the post production phase I am quite in awe of some of the results. It's oft' subtle…. but it's all in the composition, the retained detail, the look I am getting. The discipline of a fix lens helping without question.I wonder how close some of this is to medium format? Composition? Similarly I am working far more with just these two lenses, only adding the 28mm F2.8 occasionally, mostly I am trying to master the far tighter crop of the 90mm(than I envisage) when I look through the view finder, finding myself moving ever further backwards! Sounds like your Nikon with a zoom might be useful, in that case. I am trying to create a degree of space that you find in the work of say Mark Power and Stephen Shore for example, images that transcend mere shots, somehow, creating a cohesive image that I am unfamiliar with in my work up to this year. It's very much work in progress and the M is the tool of choice. You've lost me there - the camera is just a tool isn't it? However, if the M gives you the creative shot in the arm, so much the better. It did for me too, I'd have to say - but then, I don't know Mark Power or Stephen Shore, so I'm obviously a bit of a dilettante .. It is not without problems, often the first image is over exposed, start up is slow, I shoot mostly on C as S is so dire and sooooo s l o w ... I hadn't heard that first exposures tend to be over-exposed. Why is single exposure slow? Surely once the camera is up and running, taking a single exposure is pretty normal - any camera has a lag from pressing the shutter release to the shutter firing. Due to the lack of mirror, the shutter already being closed (except in Live View) and aperture stop down, I thought the M had a minimal lag compared to say, I don't know, a D800? Why would machine gunning in C mode (not a Leica forté) make a difference, other than losing your control over your decisive moment? Why am I asking these questions when you're not going to respond? Hmm John
lct Posted July 17, 2013 Share #35 Posted July 17, 2013 Startup times are indeed too slow with SD cards i've used so far. 2 seconds at best instead of one with my M8.2. I've just ordered a Lexar 600x card which would be faster according to Jaap though.
Guest Gilgamesh Posted July 17, 2013 Share #36 Posted July 17, 2013 This thread has descended into utter farce. Why do I sound surprised? I stated in the post that this was my fist real set of views and opinions taking images with the camera. I stated no replies were necessary, and why would they, it's one man's opinion, one who seeks nor requires any peer critique, no reply. I stated I would not post up images and Boy, how vindicated have I been in light of comments? Then witness the fall out, NONE of which was requested, culminating in one man's twisted post saying he wanted to read some pseudo intellectual debate on two famous photographers to keep him entertained and at his keyboard for longer and happier that he was at that moment, worse still, he had the temerity to go on and criticise me for making the initial effort. Shame on you Mitch. Why you thought it in any way acceptable to try to hijack the whole thread for your own personal agenda is still beyond me. Some still here may consider this: just take a step back and re-asses this post as it seems to me that some here should turn off their computers for six weeks, dust off their road bike / swimming goggles, running shoes and re-engage with the living in the real world such is the loss of reality in the negative comments on a post that was initially well meaning and merely for information. For information only. If this be the general measure of the men who exist here, you will be glad to know I have absolutely no desire to frequent this seemingly myopic space further, sweet music to those "Offended from Middle Wherever" who have called for the tread to be expunged. Power-down for the summer. spend time with ones loved ones, with physical hobbies and activities of old. The best to you all.
