joeswe Posted July 12, 2013 Share #2 Posted July 12, 2013 does the 50mm summicron rigid v2 need a lens hood and if so which is the fit on the rigid? is this lens prone to flaring? thanks Yes, I would recommend a lens hood for the Summicron rigid. The usual options are the "period correct" IROOA and 12585 (metal) or a simple (generic) 39mnm vented screw in shade. IMO, from a practical point of view, the 12585 is best, as it is vented (minimum finder blockage) and can be easily detached for filter use. The IROOA is sexier thant the 12585, but it blocks part of the finder and is usually a bit more expensive.
stump4545 Posted July 12, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted July 12, 2013 the Leica 12504 will not fit onto the 50mm Rigid correct? maybe get just (1) Leica 12585 to use on both a 35mm cron v4 and the Rigid might be best.
TomB_tx Posted July 12, 2013 Share #4 Posted July 12, 2013 The 12504 will physically fit, but is intended for a 35mm lens angle of view and so would not be as effective on the 50mm. The 12585 works better and is usually cheaper.
stump4545 Posted July 12, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted July 12, 2013 is the Leica 12585 designed to be ideal for the 50mm length but not ideal for 35mm length?
wda Posted July 12, 2013 Share #6 Posted July 12, 2013 is the Leica 12585 designed to be ideal for the 50mm length but not ideal for 35mm length? I have a hood 12585 bought in 1966 and it is marked to be suitable for three 50mm lenses (f/2; f/2.8; f/3.5) and two 35mm lenses (f/2.8; f/3.5). They were the option in 1966. You might get cut-off if you use it on any faster lenses in those fls.
lct Posted July 12, 2013 Share #7 Posted July 12, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Acording to xalo here, the 12585H hood does not vignette on the 35/2 v4. Aside from engravings, there is no difference between 12585 and 12585H hoods, as far as my samples are concerned, so both hoods should fit your 50/2 and 35/2 v4 with no problem. The 12504 is perhaps the nicest and probably the least efficient Leica hood for 35mm lenses if memory serves so i would forget it for 50mm and any other longer focal length. TomB_tx Posted July 31, 2013 Share #9 Posted July 31, 2013 Are these hoods available in silver? I don't believe Leitz ever made these hoods in silver, but there is an aftermarket 39mm screw-in vented silver hood of similar shape that works well on the v2 Summicron. I found this one on eBay very cheaply. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! A standard 52mm pinch lens cap will cap the open end of the hood.
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! plewislambert Posted August 9, 2013 Share #12 Posted August 9, 2013 "does the 50mm summicron rigid v2 need a lens hood and if so which is the fit on the rigid? is this lens prone to flaring?" I have been using Leica lenses (40mm, 50mm, 90mm) from the 1950s to the 1980s, maybe later and they all surprised me with flare in picture-taking situations that didn't look flare-inducing. It's not a frequent problem. The only one that never flared was a 90mm f2.8 Elmarit, that Rockwell said was particularly prone to flare, but I had this lens so closely hooded that I was surprised it did not vignette the corners of images. My 15mm CV Heliar would sometimes flare if the picture included bright sky. I get flare sometimes with a 17mm Tokina on my M9 and can't find a suitable hood (so far). It's not a digital thing- I had flare with the 40mm on my M4-P. I did hear that filters (obviously coated) also aggravated flare or internal reflections of bright areas of subject.. Maybe multi-coated filters would be immune to reflections. Philip

Yes, but on M3 it eats away a corner of the 50mm frame, iirc.
monther Posted November 20, 2019 Share #16 Posted November 20, 2019 The modern 39mm threaded 50mm Elmar-M hood fits nicely too and is available in silver, Leica 12549.

Nice hood but too small to prevent any flare in my experience. The Elmar-M 50/2.8 is less prone to flare than legacy lenses like the Summicron 50/2 v2 though.
