Leica M Typ 240: Unreliable or Reliable - Survey

Yes, the things thighslapper mentioned have been brought out by this thread. Clearly, without a survey that queried owners we would have nothing but hearsay comments that have little meaning. If, you can wade through the sour grapes in this thread there is an overall theme of reliability along with some specific camera issues that should be moved to separate threads so those folks can be helped and have a place to voice and discuss these issues.

Personally, after reading this thread of so many owners that have rock solid cameras, if I had a dud-camera that locked up or had other issues, I'd take it back so fast and dump it on the camera store counter and ask for my money back or a new one.

The survey clearly shows that a group of owners are not having problems. Why stick around here complaining and arguing about the legitimacy of the survey and calling me arrogant? Honestly, I think your frustration is misdirected.

Yes. Cautiously.

No issues that I would class as affecting reliability (i.e. the ability to take proper photos when I want to), but in review mode when zooming in on a shot, sometimes the whole screen takes on a rather peculiar lilac tinge. Like a purple filter over the whole thing. Only when zoomed in, and it won't go away without turning the camera off and then on again. It's clearly a bug of some sort, and it's annoying, but it's far from a deal-breaker in a camera that outclasses my M8 by such a margin.

Today I went to take some pictures and realised I'd left it on and run the battery down. But that's MY unreliability :D

I promised not to pollute this thread anymore.

So sorry for this, but for a good cause you may want to say your opinion on this thread about opening real forum surveys/polls to mortal forum users:

Yes, it's donquixotesque

It is really interesting that you got hung up on the minutiae of the aperture recording in telling him he has the wrong camera.

Read again. I'm not hung up - he is.

CheshireCat, I can picture you smiling away there, but you must consider who really has the authority to conduct a poll. My understanding is that the forum owner, sometimes through his mods, has that right.

If any 'Joe' that comes along wants a poll on 'how many times a day you go to the toilet' can set up poll, we would be in a real mess.

Curiosity about some 'situation' is not, IMO, a good reason for a poll. An expected outcome as a result should at least be involved, and not just 'whaddya think' type polling.

These are just my views, not necessarily those of admin.

Especially as each vote on a poll will bump it to the top of the forum again - see it happening on RFF.

Quick Tally so Far:

Yes - 37

Qualified* Yes - 6

No - 6

*Qualified being where respondent voted yes, but mentioned any lock-ups happening.

I ignored the strap lug issue (ie left in yes, as Leica acknowledges it and fixes it, so not a reliability problem, more a QC issue). Ditto any other issue which isn't directly related to reliability.

I included both a yes and a no for the person who had problems which resulted in replacement by a new camera.

You're absolutely right, I would have got back to you earlier but then I was busy removing the bottom plate following a lock up. And then again. No big deal, I eventually managed to get it to work when I realised what I wanted to picture was gone.

Since this happened to the M9 let us know if eventually it got fixed. Cheers.

Take back your M. You spent a lot of money on it. I don't understand why you guys that are having issues with a camera this expensive aren't returning them. I wouldn't put up with the problems you are having, knowing that most of us have perfectly functioning cameras.

I believe we all have the same camera, we just use it (and the EVF) differently.

I know several Leica users shooting with "white gloves", they do not use the camera in "harsh conditions" (snow, hot&humid places, not even at the beach). They just take a couple of shots at family meetings, show their beautiful camera to their friends, and are happy with it.

I am starting to think that this is what a Leica user is supposed to be, and - my bad - I should have known better.

:confused:Where in this thread do you find a correlation between the way the camera is used and the problems a few users are having? Does this particular poster have problems removing the base plate because it is snowing?

FYI, my week-old M has been at the beach twice already. And the (Olympus) EVF. It hasn't locked up.

I must agree with Rick. If my M would have those problems it would be in its box at the dealer and the money I paid would have been refunded.

Calling the lack of an accurate aperture readout and removal of the baseplate a reliability issue is just plain silly. It shows the poster up as a person who buys a 6300 Euro tool without even investigating what it is and what it does.

It seems like only last week I was in Antarctica, Neptune's Window to be precise, and I was removing the base plate in a snowstorm and changing the film in my M7. Just 36 shots later I did it again! Bit of a recidivist I guess.

I didn't realize that was a 'problem'.

I think this thread points out that some people have cameras that lock up. Most don't. That is about all I get out of this thread.

I have used every mode and the EVF is on the camera 80% of the time. I've shot videos and used R lenses and used every option and this camera doesn't lock up. I don't think it has to do with how I'm using it or not using it.

But, I now believe that some small number of folks are having problems. I don't understand why. It sounds like a few cameras are duds. Return them.

I would format my cards with SDFormatter to begin with and see what happens before sending the cam in.

For what it is worth, I don't use SD formatter. I do shoot classic mode, use the matrix mode for LV (better AWB?), and don't write to jpeg and DNG. I use DNG compressed only.

The thing I find surprising is the "some people" part. This is a standardized electronic device. Everybody should have these problems - or nobody. We should dig deeper for the cause.

My camera has locked up a handful of times...all when my 3 batteries were new. Since the batteries have gone thru several charge cycles I haven't experienced another lockup.

I've thought the same thing.
