No matter how good your 35mm work is, 6x6 will always kill 135.

There was a time (long pre-digital) when I might have agreed with your statement, but the pendulum swings and the world moves on.

I no longer make such a comparison, assuming you're commenting on the respective 'image quality' of 35mm and 6x6.  I no longer see that as important today as it was 25 years and more ago.  The strength of 35mm is visual spontaneity and agility that, in the right hands, translates through to the final image.

The more refined tonal range and definition of 6x6 isn't always an asset.

To @Mr.Prime; possibly it is the forum image uploader configuration that's the cause.  Don't stress over it, most folk here know that clicking on the image will open a better version.

Nice review, Phil.

I need to have a grip to assist holding the camera better. After suffering a motorcar accident in 2000, I've never recovered full gripping strength in my right hand. So, nuggety cameras like the Leica Ms with their timeless ergonomics are just that bit 'slippery' for my hands, especially for long days of photography. The regular 14405 hand grip does fine for me, giving me just that extra real estate of contact and the ability to crook my fingers relieves me of the effort of having to grip the camera between thumb and fingers and provide a sense of security that the camera is not going to slip out of my hands.

The hand grip for the Ms is a great asset for me.

I wish I could find one for my Nikons too, without having to get the cumbersome ones Nikon made (with power winder). I'm very fond of both the FE2 and FM3a which I've had for years now... and all the lenses that go with them. The lack of a convenient hand grip makes me consider selling them off someday; I'd be loath to do that. If anyone knows of a simple hand grip for the Nikon F series, I'd be grateful and interested. They needn't be walnut, ebony, carbon, titanium etc., just a decent secure hand grip of a sober colour. I have pursued a few leads for after-market Nikon F series compatible hand grips in the past but run into dead ends and disappointment.

Thanks,

Hello,

I have a similar problem with  diminished right hand gripping strength after suffering a motorcycle accident in 2009 and use a 14405 or a ML Photo Equip grip on my M cameras plus a MTS thumbs up.

I used a hand grip when I had a FM3A and they are still available on eBay:

Hope this helps !

Best, Jean-Marc.

I agree completely. I'd long lusted for a Mamiya 7 and, as a post-presidential election present to myself (I had been giving all my discretionary funds to the campaign), I bought one. I was well aware of the superiority of MF over FF, owning two others, What surprised me is that, now that I use the Mamiya constantly, I also use my FF (M4-P) more as well. I now take my Leica everywhere, even when I leave the Mamiya at home. The Mamiya taught me how much and why I love my Leica. And then there is your point about a certain kind of spontaneity and sometimes an unpredictable quality (dare I use the term "lomography" when discussing a Leica?).

Thanks, Jean-Marc, for the heads-up on available hand grips for the Nikon F cameras. Very helpful. I see they are supplied from Hong Kong/China. I've never bought anything from there. I trust the suppliers are reliable.

I have bought from most e bay sellers over the years, and to be honest had very few issues. Use PayPal, and a credit card, and expect a decent delay with shipping, it seems the new normal now. I didn't expect them to be so expensive though.

Thank you for the tip, Gary. The price struck me as high too but what's more is the high postage to add to it!!
