... I won't be buying a Leica with a cropped sensor and a fixed, slow AF zoom lens. ...

Sounds like Leica won't be able to count you among its customers for the Leica X Vario that it announced today, John. (Me neither.)

I got a bit excited that this camera might have been the Gap Filler (the teaser seemed to suggest that it would fill the significant gap between the M cameras and the X). I did say at the time that I would probably be wrong on this camera, as I was on every other Leica release to date ...

So, I canceled my order, and looked at the shelf at home (M9-P, Monochrom & M3 and a nice clutch of Leica's best glass) and decided I have enough already. I've given my NEX to my son - he's very happy about that!

If I do decide to get a smaller camera, it will be an RX-1. Don't need it though.

John, what you do need is more pictures.

Your stable is already comfortably filled.

Now go fill your gallery! :D

(I hear an echo of 'pots calling kettles ......' in the distance.) ;)

Pete, we all know the reason you won't be a customer for the vario x is because you have too damn much good stuff already! ;)

Thanks for the compliment, Erl, but there's a flaw in your argument. One can never, ever have too much good stuff.:D I just wish I could shoot as well as you do, results and 'technique'.:p

Pete, the flaw in your argument is that you ignore the ceiling! ;)

Rest assured I have been watching your posts and your imaging is definitely up to a standard I admire. As for technique, well that is something that is personal to each of us. Results indicate the level of technique.Clearly yours is fine.

If they move too far from the core of the M and what genuinely differentiates it.

Every time I see a picture of the new M with an Olympus EVF I feel uncomfortable. Diluting the essence of the M loses focus IMO (pun intended!)

I agree. That EVF is both out of place and it's an eye sore. As is that bloody movie button and microphone. I don't see why the M had to change from the M9 beyond iq improvements.

Why is it more objectionable than an external viewfinder?...

An external VF is much more elegant and discrete than the eye sore EVF to be honest. :D;)

The Frankenfinder might be an eyesore to some bit it is a marvelous device in and of itself.

If people would pay as much attention to the look of the photograph and not the cosmetics of the device it would mean success and advancement.

HCB must have worked for 15-20 years with this other beauty. Not a monster like the Frankenfinder (sorry jdlaing ;)) but still bigger than my EVF.

I can fully understand the uncomfortable feeling, In fact, I share it. But the darn thing is so practical. I console myself with the thought that it is a lot less intrusive than the Visoflex:rolleyes:.

It looks cheap as hell. IMO, of corse. Particularly on the silver body it looks like it doesn't belong. You can tell it's third party. Like buying a Bentley and putting a tacky, plastic aftermarket giant spoiler on it.

Personally I think the Frankenfinder looks handsome, purposeful and well built.

Not so sure I agree with this. When a camera is inspiring and a joy to use you feel more wanting to use it for the sake of it. When you are 100% happy with it, ergonomically, it helps.
