IkarusJohn Posted June 4, 2013 Share #1161 Posted June 4, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Full frame might pique my interest, but I doubt it. The Facebook comment leaves a lot of room for an APS-C sensor - "larger than usual sensor for its relatively small body. Not a big sensor, and relatively small body. Hmmm I'm ready to be underwhelmed.

The Facebook comment leaves a lot of room for an APS-C sensor - "larger than usual sensor for its relatively small body. Not a big sensor, and relatively small body. Hmmm I'm ready to be underwhelmed. Relative to what exactly ... ... full frame M? ... X2? Unlikely to be relative to X2 because the X2 is now designated Micro ... which is likely to be smaller than Mini. A large sensor is more indicative of FF ... in a smaller body than the M240 ... possibly a rangefinder-less pocketable FF. And remember that CMOSIS made a big play on the fact that their M240 FF CMOS sensor's micro lenses are well suited to FF wide angle lenses ... and if the new MINI uses interchangeable lenses, and thus offers an 'R solution' too, all R lenses including 15mm, 16mm, 19mm, 21mm and 24mm ... plus wide angle zooms .. would be fully usable. There would be little point in making a cropped new sensor for a new Leica interchangeable lens camera given that CMOSIS have solved the wide angle vignetting problem. dunk

nibbler Posted June 4, 2013 Share #1168 Posted June 4, 2013 I question the value of this marketing campaign (in terms of sales after it is launched). Sure, it garners a lot of interest in the forums, but we are mostly M users and therefore may not be the target for this new camera. The target is most likely a new market, and they do not read the rumors websites or frequent this forum. Would it have not been better just to surprise us all with a new camera (whatever it may be) on June 11? Out of the blue with no warning, Leica launches a new choice for a new generation of users... IkarusJohn Posted June 4, 2013 Share #1169 Posted June 4, 2013 True. What I don't get is the camera. If you wish to gain 1% market share (which I'm sure the equity partners are very keen on), you extend your penetration to the markets where people are likely to buy your products (not here, but with glossy stores in affluent markets - HK?) and you offer the products they want and understand. I don't believe for a moment that the 1% want a rangefinder, nor do they want interchangeable manual focus lenses. At least, not yet ... But what looks like a plasticky, slow zoom version of an already dead concept? I don't get it. If you want to attract new buyers to Leica, you need to draw them towards your unique selling point - fantastic lenses, a simple user interface and unmatched image quality. Buyers will stand in the Leica shop with the X-Vario-Zoom thingy and say why should I pay so much more for this, when I can have ... What would I buy? An RX-1. But I have three M cameras. What is a buyer in this market looking for that would draw them to this camera? The compact offerings are overwhelming, so the buyer is wanting more what, exactly? I'd say image quality, camera quality, and a traditional approach to exposure that they understand (from their youth with their FE, FM, AE-1 etc). So a larger sensor will be important - full frame would be better, as they can understand the lens focal length - but with a fixed lens, perhaps less so. A slow midrange zoom is pretty unappealing, regardless how well the sensor performs at high ISO. The price will kill it.
CaptZoom Posted June 5, 2013 Share #1170 Posted June 5, 2013 The marketing approach Leica is taking did wonders for Ford with the ultimate unveiling of the Mustang in the early mid-sixties. I question the value of this marketing campaign (in terms of sales after it is launched). Sure, it garners a lot of interest in the forums, but we are mostly M users and therefore may not be the target for this new camera. rramesh Posted June 5, 2013 Share #1172 Posted June 5, 2013 My take. Camera manufacturers are struggling. At the low end their business is being chipped away by phones with better and better cameras. At the high end, there is not enough volume to justify frequent refreshes. System cameras as major investments and longevity counts. From an Asia perspective. Leica is in a unique position - Solid and respected brand, collector value seen in lenses and older cameras, industry leading quality. The red dot has tremendous appeal. While the S and M cameras are made in Germany and hence desirable, the same cannot be said of the Panasonic badged ones, seen as second tier. Same as with the Canadian manufactured Leiz lenses in the past. Leica making fine new cameras in Germany with increased factory capacities, is the right move. Many folks don't want to lug a whole system camera. They are content with one body, preferably with a high quality sensor and a good collapsible zoom (28-70 will be perfect). The average person often doesn't think like a camera geek about bokeh, high ISO, low light, high speed etc. Personalization would be nice. Think different leather, metallic finishes etc. A waiting list for cameras is actually good. Makes it more desirable. And I think Leica needs to learn from other sites to seriously redesign their website and their choice of graphics used. Clearly photoshopped images, wrong perspectives and lighting don't do justice to their name and brand.
hamey Posted June 5, 2013 Share #1173 Posted June 5, 2013 From an Asia Perspective. Yes I agree with you, the RED DOT has tremendous appeal, ESPECIALLY ...............WHEN A WHITE FLAG IS BEHIND IT................LOL. SAYONAR.
Ecaton Posted June 5, 2013 Share #1174 Posted June 5, 2013 On paper the specs of the mini look far from convincing (unless it will have a FF sensor). However, the red dot still sells cameras like the D-Lux 6 and X, both of which priced at fantasyland levels. So even with an aps-c sensor and a slow zoom with a boring range some minis will find their way from dealers shelfs into life style obsessed buyers` bags. Anthony Flores Posted June 5, 2013 Share #1177 Posted June 5, 2013 This may be pathetic wishful thinking... But what if the camera is actually the FF interchangeable with a smaller body, and the zoom isn't actually "fixed" but rather, one of the first in a new line of AF lenses with M mount. I know, I know... too good to be true. Or is it.....

IkarusJohn Posted June 5, 2013 Share #1179 Posted June 5, 2013 Looking at the Facebook page (to see if there could be a mount in there somewhere), I'm struck by the progression: Nano - DLux Micro - X2 Mini - ? Leica M If this is a size progression (and they do refer to a larger sensor), why in the world would the Mini be the same size as the X2? I'm getting a bit more optimistic ... Leica M If this is a size progression (and they do refer to a larger sensor), why in the world would the Mini be the same size as the X2? I'm getting a bit more optimistic ... I wonder how the reaction would be if the cam ends up being an 1.3 crop like the M8 but takes M lenses and has built in EVF, no RF..... would be interesting for sure. Seems like there are a lot of "FF or die!" people here and to be honest, I'm kinda on the fence about anything not FF after seeing what's possible with the RX1. But then again, 1.3 isn't that bad, and with a Summilux would offer similarly shallow DOF wide open compared to an RX1... would be tempting.
