Will Leica update to the VF-4 EVF?

Ouch

That's a serious oversight, how many people bought a Leica Evf and now can't spend more money upgrading.

Also I'm pissed because that's a $7000 camera and, you know, it feels cheap to have a CPU incompatibility.

And, it smells like BS. I'm a software guy, but shouldn't it be possible to bridge the incompatibility? Might not be cost effective, unless it's really a bit size problem.

Thanks for the info in any case, feeling a little hrumph.

not overly happy with the news either, but i don't have, and dont plan to buy the current EVF either, quite happy with the RF focusing of the M (the whole reason i bought one)

He could also have been wrong, but did seem to be knowledgeable on the M, S and T lines.

Luckily I tried the VF2 at the shop before ordering one. It is very difficult to use for anything but framing. Focusing is not accurate enough, unlike the EVF in my Sony A7, probably due to the low resolution and refresh rate. I suspect this is one of the things that Leica will upgrade whenever they decide to release the M240P.

My experience is this is lens dependant. I agree that with wider lenses focussing with the EVF is less than satisfactory but on the other hand with longer lenses it's a joy. With un-coupled longer lenses it is both a joy and a game changing bonus.

If I may go on a quick tangent, anyone knows whether M240 is compatible with the SF-26 flash to be released with the T?

Wishing for a bouncable small fill flash.

Definitely longer lenses are much easier to focus than wides, but on the A7 it was very easy to focus my 25/2.8 very accurately (like never before even with the best calibrated RF) but it is next to impossible to get critically accurate focus with the EVF 2 (it tends to back focus, a lot). I would like the next EVF from Leica to be at least equally as good as that of the A7.

Agreed, but unfortunately it looks as if we'll have to buy a new body as well as a new EVF.

By that time it will be even more competitive in FF compact system camera market than it is today, M typ 240 was cheaper than M9 at launch there is a hope that next camera becomes more affordable, one can always wish.

I have zero issues focusing on any of my lenses with the EVF, including my Noctilux....maybe you didn't have the diopter set correctly when you tested it...but I use mine regularly.

Its in invaluable addition.

Mine works fine too. Somehow something that was state of the art a few years back is unusable now to many. Interesting.

Spoke to a Leica rep today (T launch in perth) and asked if there will be an upgrade to the EVF4 T some point.

I was told "no, not going to happen, it is incompatible with the processor in the M"

That, while disappointing, doesn't make sense. Where is Hussmann when you need him? MICHAEL??

I use the EVF all the time with the WATE and CV 21/1.8 and a happy with it though I do use the viewfinder to focus as I find it more accurate and quicker. On longer lenses I use the Sony A7. As much as I would like the upgrade I am sure it will never happen. You will probably find the next M has the same finder as the T which I have tried an is excellent.

I am not sure if reps can be relied on for technical information. It does seem rather strange that Olympus can provide a firmware upgrade that allows the VF4 to be used on a lot of their cameras including some lower budget older ones (albeit with some limitations). VF-4 Electronic Viewfinder | OLYMPUS E-SYSTEM | Olympus Imaging Asia

I would think that if Leica wished to provide a firmware update they could but as it is not in their commercial interest to do so they probably will not.

I cannot offer an explanation I’m afraid. I had thought that when the M could cope with the throughput required for 2.0 MP at 25 fps in movie mode it would be capable of providing 0.8 MP at 30 fps for the VF-4. But apparently it is not. (60 fps was out of the question of course.)

I would have thought it was in Leica's commercial interest to keep their customers happy.

My guess is that Leica will keep their customers happy and satisfy its own commercial interest by soon releasing the M240-P and P_meisterstueck...

the P will have the current sensor with updated Maestro processor to handle a proper EVF with navigable magnification;

the P_meisterstueck will come in a special matte silver chrome finish, have no logo on the front, and include a matching silver paint EVF that works really well.

As a result of this release, Leica R lenses will double again in market price. In turn, Peter Karbe will present the APO Elmar 100mm f/4 ASPH (also available in silver finish).

I have already placed orders for all of this, :p

Not if it means using an Olympus EVF, I get the feeling they were a little peeved that we went and bought their version rather than the double the price identical leica one;)

Well then they shouldnt have tried to rip us off by putting an ancient EVF in a shiny new shell and doubling the price !

Agreed.

But we should remember that the M240 had been in the pipeline for a while and should have been in our hands a year or so before most of us received ours.

The EVF-4 was not available at the time of the camera's development and original release date - who knows when it would have been released if Leica had to redesign it for an EVF-4.

Perhaps an oversight that forward compatibility was not planned for.

I doubt that they give a crap about cameras already sold.

Just look at the cracking pace of firmware upgrade releases for the M9, Monochrom, and M240 to keep existing customers happy.

My completely uninformed guess: they could probably do it if they cared to- but they won't ever do it and don't care to. If it ain't (quite) broke: don't fix (or upgrade) it.

I would need more than an un-named reps off the cuff remark to convince me there was any technical limitation- owning M8's and M9's I am now convinced they don't have a very aggressive, productive or imaginative firmware upgrade team (budget) working away at Leica... which is a shame for a 'camera for life'.
