Will Leica update to the VF-4 EVF?

I mean, it never happened to me the few times I used LV output on the body display. Hope this is clearer now.

makes sense...now I see how you've deduced that the Oly is at fault and not the Leica EVF which you don't own, or LV in general, or batteries or cards or just faulty fw :)

I assume that it is not batteries, nor cards, not faulty hardware because the issue only happened a couple of times without the EVF.

I cannot deduce the Leica EVF is better than the Oly, exactly as you cannot assume that the Oly and Leica are identical to the last firmware bit.

I strongly suspect though that the problem is in the body fw.

sorry I misunderstood. I thought you said earlier the problem was the Oly VF.

That's what Rick's survey is saying so far. Hardly scientific of course but enough to avoid presuming the contrary IMO.

Ricks Survey says people don't find the camera "unreliable". I have experienced a handful of lockups (not dissimilar to My M8 and M9 at launch) and I voted NO.

A hand full of lockups that are restored in seconds by power cycling did not make justify an "unreliable" vote, as I didn't lose any photos and I believe its FW related and will be fixed soon as it has in the past.

If my camera locked up more frequently and I was unable to capture images I would have voted differently.

Sounds like our experiences are too different for us to find an agreement i'm afraid. The forthcoming firmware update will solve your problems soon hopefully.

Hi there,

I'm looking to bump this thread up for a current discussion of the above. I have been using an M240 and a Sony A7. The M240 is an overall better experience for me, but the A7 did spoil me in terms of the EVF experience, and now the VF-2 seems way out of date on the M240.

I am trying to figure out if Leica will update the firmware on the M240 to allow use with the VF-4, or at the very least come out with their own updated EVF that will work on the M240. This seems like something that is necessary, otherwise Leica's "flagship" will lag behind even many consumer grade products.

I know that EVF is not necessarily "the point" with a rangefinder. I also know from firsthand experience that I will use the optical viewfinder as much as possible with the M240 simply based on the convenience and ease of use. However, there are many times that I want to grab my 90mm and I find that I'm generally opting for the Sony A7 over the M240 because of the VF-2. If the VF were better, I'd probably go with the M240.

On my Lexar 16 GB Pro the blackout time dropped dramatically, less than 2 seconds in parallel with fast startup times. I put in a Panasonic Gold 16 Gb last week and both startup time and blackout time lengthened significantly again. But I am aware that it varies per camera.

About 1.5 to 2 sec is still not ideal, but just acceptable for relatively fast shooting.

Another thing that helps, but it is purely psychologically, is to set image review to “hold shutter button”. You can display the image immediately which is much better than staring into a black hole.

So if you took the same SD card and put it in two different M's with all the settings and firmware matched between the two, you may get two different start up times and two different black out times? How can this be? What is causing the difference?

As to the comfort of looking at the image you just took rather than the one you want to take, well it's a valiant attempt to polish a turd, I suppose.

I prefer polished turds Less smelly:p The comfort is looking at the scene (as it was :() instead of looking at a black screen. At least it is less tiring on the eye.

I found out that I had good results with Lexar Pro - still have, but others reported less success. Still other members reported decent times with fast Sandisks which are slow on my camera. There is no consistency and I am at a loss for an explanation.

Well the A7 and my fuji X have no black out what so ever after taking a shot!! so essentially what bugs me about leica is that electronically at least they are only just keeping up with the game not ahead of it like others. I mean Olympus bought out the new EVF only a few weeks after general release of the M so they must have known about it

I should hope so; it is their primary viewfinder system. We are discussing an auxiliary system here. I wonder what the camera would have cost if Leica would have designed and implemented a dedicated removable lag-free EVF instead of using an off-the-shelf system.
