None of my business, frankly, what he does with his money...

However, I did tire rather quickly of his this-is-wonderful-the best-since-sliced-bread-wow-amazing reviews, then promptly selling the kit.

Guess he has a website to run and generate income.

I'm neither a Huff defender or a basher, but I found his story on why he sold it compelling. 1) He needed money for taxes and his son's summer trip to Japan, 2) he needed a new computer, after five years with the old one, 3) he figured he could get an M again, maybe not for many months, but it would still be available, 4) he loves his Monochrom and made a choice in its favor. He couldnt afford $13,000 tied up in digital Leicas. He emphasized he was selling it for financial reasons, not quality or his having turned against what he'd posted earlier. Pretty straightforward, not worthy of too much energy or excitement, though Lord knows, the mere mention of his name will prompt a 600 post thread....

It's definitely his business to do as he wishes - but he doesn't need to tell the world his every detail. I quite like his articles by the way. He hurts no-one and helps others.

So how many cameras does he need to own, and for how long, before he earns some credibility, or isn't honesty in commentary and camera reviews enough nowadays?

Of course Steve Huff selling his M is spread across many camera forums. And the overriding response from the M fans reads like he has brought shame on the heads of everybody that owns one. 'How can he, it's the best camera I bought since the last time I bought a camera, how can he devalue it's prestige and make me look like an idiot!', is pretty much the subtext. Well it's probably true to say that most of the M fans who take umm-bridge and feel cheated now will be dropping the M like a hot brick as soon as the next model comes out, such is life, such is the irony of reading cynical intent into people's motives. I think he will feel relieved not to be a member of that club anymore, after the hatchet job being done to him by its members.

No, that’s not the point at all. It is not about Steve Huff daring to contradict the enthusiasm of those who have bought an M, it is about him contradicting his own enthusiasm. To quote from his review (The Leica M 240 Real World Camera Review 2013 by Steve Huff and yes, the text was set in bold on his website):

It is my favorite camera EVER and the new king of the Leica M hill. This is the best Leica digital RF to date hands down and yes you can quote me on that. It has the Mojo, the feeling, the maturity, the soul and the history of Leica behind it. I think this will end up being my new favorite camera ever.

Now of course this exuberant display of enthusiasm did have a hollow ring and I have never taken it seriously, so I couldn’t say I was shocked to learn he has decided to ditch the camera.

It was a good decision if he needed to sell the M240 or the Monocrom. On the Monocrom he would have taken a loss. The M240 he probably sold at $1K+ premium over what he paid for it.

I did too. I read it and didn't think another thing about it. He needed the money, for good reasons, and had to decide between two cameras. He shared why. That was it.

I don't understand why he is such a polarizing figure. I like his reviews and have found them to be very accurate. Why do people have such a problem with him?

Jealousy perhaps?

He can do and write all he wants. My feeling the only "mistake" he made was helping promote the now failed Hyperprime glued together lens and waited a little too long to remove ads for it after it was well known the glue was not holding lens elements in place and was falling apart with every person who purchased one-some even in transit to them.

Mine is not for sale as a matter of fact I am planning on a second one.

Algrove, obviously you can not resist broadcasting this nonsense and obviously you have not read his update on this matter.

The HyperPrime 50/T0.95 did not fail, it is still available for online order as CINE version (perfectly working for me since 14 months and perfectly working on my M 240 in liveview mode as well as for videos) and the LM version is still available as well locally in Hong Kong for people who bring along their M in order to make sure it is calibrated correctly.

While he may not be 100% correct, I'd say he's pretty close.

Let's not go there again, please. The final word on that particular kafuffle has been said by Erwin Puts, I guess.
