Your Questions To Leica / Leica M Lug Straps

I just returned from my Leica dealer in Seoul, Bondo Camera, and they took my M without lens, battery, and memory card but with body cap to be sent to Solmes. They will do the shipping for me and take care of all at no expense of course. They said it will take three weeks but I expect a month as Korea is a long way from Germany. I did receive a notice from Solmes that my camera was affected (it was delivered April 3rd). There was no sign of the problem but I am not taking any chances.

I am not complaining as they gave me a used Monochrome loaner camera (with two batteries and a charger) until it arrives back. Great chance to try this one out. I have a 50 APO on order so I hope it comes before I must return the monochrome!

My question is how did Leica Camera Solmes know that my camera has the problem and that I was the owner? I did register the camera in the owners area of the Leica Webb Site. Is that how they knew to contact me or was it through my dealer sending the registration information in to Solmes? I ask this question because I wonder if this is one use Leica Camera makes of the owners registration portion of the Leica Webb Site.

This is exactly how they notified you.

As for my Leica M recall:

Datum Status

03.05.2013 Service order registered on

06.05.2013 Oder confirmation sent

06.05.2013 In repair

(Last check on 11 May 9:30pm Asia time)

Leica is taking ridiculously long time to work on my camera (after 5 full work days and yet to be completed vs marketing lies of 48hours turn around)!

I wrote in and called Leica Singapore Service Center earlier this week, all I received was "staff on vacation. Kindly leave message behind". Followed by no response till date.

Also wrote to Germany customer care, no response till date as well. Call Solms customer care, provided my repair number and I was told my camera should be completed repair soon. I will call again come 13 May Monday to see what excuse they will be making this time!

I've been notified that mine needs to go in but it doesn't suit me to send it at this moment and the lugs seem so far fine to me. My question is, therefore, 'is there any warning sign that they are working loose or do they just suddenly give out with no warning?"

Yes- see the official statement FAQ:

.

When my lug-less m9Titan was dropped because the loop disengaged from the body I did not receive the full refund nor I got a replacement body.

It took some time for Leica to acknowledge the problem with my Titan. It was a manufacturing tolerances problem, I was told. Because of that experience I am hesitant to buy anything from Leica's first production batches. I'm stuck with my m9 and film bodies and bought some new lenses...

Good luck to all the early adopters

I've got my Leica M back after almost a month. Since it is a "recall", I have requested for the warranty period to be extended accordingly. The reply was something like this: 'This is not a recall. It is a precautionary check conducted for early batches to ensure everything is fine. Therefore we can not extend the warranty." I wonder... If this is not a recall, what is? My question is.. Even if this does not constitute a "Recall", would this period while the M was away on the request of leica for the "Precautionary check" deserves an extension in warranty period? ;)

Eh - highly unusual to extend a warranty for this reason, in the camera world as in other walks of life. A car manufacturer won't do it either, nor a vacuum cleaner manufacturer to name but two. And it is not unreasonable. They would have to keep records of the exact repair time of each and every repair ever made under guaranty for every product.

I am not asking for an extension - though it would be a nice gesture. Recording it should not be a problem. They do keep records of every purchase date. These are the start of warranty. Camera by camera. Just adjust them if they wish to do so. As a small gesture of goodwill for the imposed, rather significant, inconvenience.

George,

In my experience, Leica have a very generous out of warranty FOC repair policy in any case, so whereas I think there is some merit in your suggestion, in Leica's case, I don't think it is required.
