Rick-Are you sure it was blue loctite? Why not red?

Nope. Leica ran out of their supply of red on the M8 and M9. It appears that some Chinese lens maker has bought up all of the blue Loctite for the assembly of their lenses. Me bad.

I looked everywhere on the Leica web site, but was not able to find a link that tracks repairs. Can you guys point me to the right URL? I like to find out progress on my M240 as well.

Never mind, found it, do not know how I could have missed it.

Two weeks to the day that it was collected my M was returned yesterday, together with a complementary copy of "Leica Myself", which is a nice touch. The enclosed letter from Alfred Schopf says:

"Thank you for purchasing a Leica M and for your patience while we reaffixed the carrying strap eyelets. We also took the liberty of performing a comprehensive examination of your Leica M in order to ensure that the camera is flawless and in excellent working order.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere apologies for the inconvenience you have experienced. as a small token of my appreciation for your forbearance, I would like to present you with "Leica Myself", a selection of auto portraits of Leica users like you and me.

Leica has always been, and will continue to be, committed to the highest standards of excellence, and we will make every effort to earn and live up to your faith and trust in leica. Thank you for your patronage."

There is also a separate note saying that the camera has had its sensor cleaned too, and a signed test certificate.

All in all I am truly impressed by this level of customer service.

Blue and red loctite have been discontinued. There's only monochrom loctite left.
Blue and red locktite can only be obtained by subscription, to guarantee that you have the latest type.

I would prefer leica provide us with a complementry spare battery instead.

That would be awesome. If not a spare battery then not this horrible "myself" book, but another one. I really do not need a book of "self portraits"... The Ninety Nine Years Leica Book would have been a better choice...

I see the happy news today that my repair is completed. Does anyone know how quickly, once that message shows up, one's M arrives back to its loving owner in the States? Put more directly, any chance I'll have it back for the weekend?

I recently discovered mine was potentially affected, and they advised I send it back for a precautionary check.

I told them I was going to Asia including Vietnam in 2 weeks and had already sold my M9 so I didn't want to send it until after I am back unless they can guarantee getting it back to me in time. They said it usually takes 4 days inc postage, but it might not so I better send it off once back.

That's fine with me. There are no signs that the lugs are coming lose, but I will just need to make sure I don't leave it dangling from my kneck too much!

Mine is not going off until 24 May, when I go into hospital for a while. I have to admit to being rather nervous walking round our local agricultural college's open day on Saturday with the M240 and the very large and heavy Zeiss 28-85 Vario Sonnar on it. I kept clutching both straps, hoping not to have a simultaneous bi-lateral lug failure.

BTW "lugs" is the Scottish word for ears. Given their appearance on an M, this seems quite appropriate :)

Heard from the Leica Store that the check on mine was completed yesterday, meaning it was shipped today. Since it has to go through NJ 1st, I've been told that it may not get to DC by Saturday.

Those of us who have been around since the days of the M8 recall will remember the largesse of Stephen K Lee, Leica's short-lived CEO, who offered 30% off a lens of our choice as a gesture for the inconvenience caused. Whether it was that or the later announcement of the M8 being upgradeable forever which lead to Mr Lee's demise is uncertain.

Separately, I note that Leica are using DHL to collect cameras and UPS to deliver them. Maybe UPS don't offer a service for the driver to hang around while the camera is packed up. Not that mine did, they just left the box by the door, never came back and I had to hand carry it into a DHL depot where some sullen receptionist insisted on opening the package to check what was inside. I didn't bother to explain to her the benefits of the M Typ 240 over earlier cameras or ask her where she stood on the CCD vs CMOS debate.

Mine is also repaired now and should hopefully be back soon.

But it seems Leica has more like a 5 day turn-around time for the repair than the stated 48 hours.
