Definitely they do! Digilux 2 "turned me on" digital photography.

Sold it after a couple of years and regreted it ever since! But I have carried on with other Leica digital cameras: Digilux 3, D-Lux 4 and now X1.

If you can find a second have a look at these images - taken around Chicago in 2004. Very little editing in PS.

Only picked up the D2 last week so I haven't really had a good play yet but these are my first few outputs - my other camera is a sony a900 full frame DSLR so very different sensors and detail capture but initial impressions are really good

Tried B&W

And some color during a nice english summers day with the dog

Just an FYI... I find the Digilux 2 handles people and skin tones exceptionally well when slightly overexposed. You'll also have a little better handle on the "noise" when you expose slightly to the right side of the histogram... especially when dealing with shadow detail.

Have fun.

Thanks John - good advice

Tried it out with a ND8 filter and some longer exposure times today at a local windmill - still need to do some work I think, this one was over exposed and rescued in LR3

And this one had an awful lot of PP

It's been my experience that Digilux 2 files don't rescue well. At 5MP, they're pretty delicate. It may not show up on a screen monitor, but if you're looking to print, you need to REAL careful.

On the other hand, it's a great tool for learning how to "get it right in the camera." ;)

Leica look? Straight of the camera file. Jpeg

Vlad:

"Leica look" almost defies definition. It's like trying to define why something is quintessential.. the fact that something has "magic" is exactly what makes it magic.

However, in a friendly effort (and probably a conversation that would require many hours and many fifths of adult beverages) to help find the goal of "Leica look," there are several things to look for.

In my opinion (and I won't pretend that it's humble), the Leica look must first find its roots in film-like qualities. The image needs to transition light to dark softly, gently yet with authority. Darks must be dark, lights must be light ... and shades in between need to be defined. Shadows and highlights need to hold detail. Forms must hold shape. And sharp is sharp where it needs to be and soft is soft by design.

Forgetting about the "Leica look" for the time being.... since as stated... it's something that comes on its own, let's talk about getting more from your current image. Please know, I don't wish to dampen your enthusiasm for your camera or your new adventure. On the contrary, I hope to encourage you.

My suggestion(s) for this first image is get closer... a lot closer. Find the eyes... and get them in the light... a lot of light. In a subtle way, you want the light bathing the important parts of the image and fading on the not-so-important. The same is true of the focus (depth-of-field).

Not sure this is the best example, but it's one I was able to get to quickly and I think demonstrates some of the talking points.

The Digilux 2 is an amazing tool for capturing pure photographic images. Unlike many of the current crop of DSLR and other modern offerings, it has the feel of a classic film camera. I find, unlike my work gear, the Digilux 2 lets me slow down, think and produce photos that are personally more satisfying and emotionally more rewarding.

Just remember, it's not just the camera. If it was, the Digilux 2 would be a huge disappointment. There are cameras available that are far better at producing unchaperoned images. It's YOU and what you do with the Digilux 2 that makes the magic. It's a camera that allows YOU to do your best... it gets out of your way. That can't be said about most other digital offerings out there.

Took an impromptu sunset cruise on the Gulf last night. So impromptu, I had to use the only camera I had with me. Lucky for me. :) This is what I love about the Digilux 2.

The first one could have been sharper... it's hand held at 1/15 sec. indoors using available light. But I like expression and lighting from the window behind me... so the content wins. :)
