So glad that this thread keeps going - so many great pictures.

I decided to go shooting in Los Angeles - primarily with an Olympus Pen E-P2 because its EVF is so damn good. I got some OK pictures.

My girlfriend shot my M8.

After a couple of hours, I decided to switch to the Digilux 2 in my bag.

The EVF wasn't as crisp, the delay when shooting RAW was eternal and I was manually focusing because the auto-focus sometimes misses.

A few days later, I couldn't believe how good the pictures from the D2 looked as I was editing them in Lightroom.

Here's just a couple to add to the collection.

An image from my recently acquired Leica Digilux 2. The photograph of Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire was taken with the camera set to B&W 'mode' i.e.. white balance set to B&W, followed by a little adjustment in Photoshop. I'm beginning to appreciate the qualities of this camera (especially the lens), it's a pity that one of my picture libraries (alamy) won't accept images from these old cameras any longer. I fear this, my first ever Leica camera, may lead to other, much more expensive purchases......

Geoff, a fine mono landscape picture from your D2. You might find even better quality if you convert from Raw RGB to mono.

I share your sentiment regarding Alamy's acceptance criteria regarding older cameras. I find it galling, because some of my early D2 pictures continue to sell well on Alamy, yet they won't even accept improved processing of some of these older images, notwithstanding their saleability. Ah well, there are many people who will admire your work in the future, regardless of the obsolescence of the Digilux 2.

David, thanks for your comments. I'm still experimenting with the camera following its return from Solms a few weeks ago. While I normally always shoot raw files with my other camera(s), the impression I get from reading here and on Thorsten Overgaard's is that the jpeg files are so good (either B&W or colour) that there's no real need to shoot raw files.

Of course, the slow write times are also a factor. I do not, however, like losing the digital information in a file when shooting jpeg only, and if I was using the camera for library submissions I would probably shoot raw. I need to experiment more, I think.

On the matter of alamy, I do feel that they just include or exclude cameras purely on the specification, which presumably means that each year the older ones drop off the list as new ones are added. I think that if they actually looked at the images from a Digilux 2 they might reconsider (for a while, at least), but they are a rather large and 'faceless' organisation now compared with when I first joined in 2001, so you just get 'cut and paste' replies to many questions.

I thought when I bought this Digilux it might be a dangerous thing to do, and as I've recently been looking at used M8 & M9 cameras, lenses etc on dealers web sites this may well turn out to be true. A slippery & expensive slope, I think....

First to Geoff: actually the slope might not be that steep and expensive.. At first it is very tempting to acquire a M8 or M9 next to a D2. But read at this forum that there are people that actually prefer their D2!

I encountered the following scene when cycling to my work in the Netherlands, at dawn. The picture was chosen by Flickr to their "Explore" section that day, meaning that now a good 6100+ plus people that clicked this photo are now aware that an explored picture can come from a nearly 10 year old, 5MegaPixel camera :) I hope that we get some new members from this!

Geoff, I also use M8 and M9 bodies and consider either a good choice. The M9 is full frame and is still an extremely good camera despite being obsolescent. The M8 is nearly as good but suffers from the crop factor and needs UV/IR lenses for critical work. I would suggest that you buy from a trusted Leica dealer for the benefits that offers. If you have access to one, you have the advantage of trying before you buy. Regarding lenses, you do not have to buy the latest and fastest specimens. Just glance at another popular thread in this forum which runs and runs because it attracts extremely good examples of the use of older lenses.
