rramesh Posted January 29, 2013 Share #1 Posted January 29, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Maybe it's a dumb question, but ... Most folks who use a rangefinder like a Leica view through the right eye keeping the left free to view the surrounding. This is what they are used to. Most SLR users on the other hand tend to use the left eye and camera manufacturers assume this in their design. Now what happens on an M with the EVF? Do you use the left or continue with the right eye?
Advertisement Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Hi rramesh, Take a look here Right eye or left with the M?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
hepcat Posted January 29, 2013 Share #2 Posted January 29, 2013 Well, I don't know specifically about the M-240 with the EVF, but I use my left eye for shooting with all my M Leicas, and leave the right eye open behind the camera. I've never used a viewfinder with my right eye.
algrove Posted January 29, 2013 Share #3 Posted January 29, 2013 I currently use my right. When I get an M, I will tell you which eye I use then.
xrogers Posted January 29, 2013 Share #4 Posted January 29, 2013 Most SLR users on the other hand tend to use the left eye and camera manufacturers assume this in their design. Now what happens on an M with the EVF? Do you use the left or continue with the right eye? Most film SLRs seemed right-eyed to me (the winding lever often stuck out, and could poke you in the eye or forehead). Motorized SLRs seem more eye neutral. Leicas favor the right-eye-dominant majority (about 2/3 of people), leaving the other third with grease on the rear screen and/or squashed noses. My left-eyed wife isn't fond of the Leica, a shame. I'm inveterately right-eyed, and don't expect that to change with any camera. Later, Clyde
Michael Geschlecht Posted January 29, 2013 Share #5 Posted January 29, 2013 Hello Everybody, Leica M's are ergonometrically right HANDED cameras which are pretty much ambiopterous. That is: You can use either eye in the range/viewfinder window & still work the controls reasonably well. Many people talk about the advantages of looking thru the range/viewfinder with the right eye while viewing the scene with the left. I don't know what percentage of people actually do that. I think many people actually view the scene with their right eye looking thru the range/viewfinder & close their left eye so they can better concentrate on the scene they are framing. If they look thru the range/viewfinder with their left eye that pretty much blocks their right eye from seeing anything. There was a Thread a while back in which people wrote about how to quickly & easily determine if a person is left eye dominant, right eye dominant or ambiopterous. Michael Geschlecht Posted January 29, 2013 Share #6 Posted January 29, 2013 Hello Again Everybody, I think most SLR's are right eye'd because they are right HANDED. Exceptions in 35mm cameras being old Exactas which are left HANDED & left eye'd & Robots & Alpas which are right HANDED & ambiopterous as per Post #5 above. Reds Posted January 29, 2013 Share #7 Posted January 29, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm left-eyed naturally on whatever camera I use. It's really beneficial on a Rangefinder, to be able to see the back of the camera with my right eye whilst composing. I can see any grizzly bears in coal mines that might be about to intrude in to my composition. And the nose grease lubricates the screen nicely, especially in cold weather. So far - not wasted a single frame on those suckers ;-)
jdlaing Posted January 29, 2013 Share #8 Posted January 29, 2013 Left eye. I had a detached retina a few years back and after the surgery my right eye is half a stop off.
mjh Posted January 29, 2013 Share #9 Posted January 29, 2013 Since I am right-eyed, I use my right eye with any type of viewfinder, be it a rangefinder or an SLR.
Guest borge Posted January 29, 2013 Share #10 Posted January 29, 2013 Right handed left eyed. Works wonders. I usually used my right eye with AF cameras but with the M I focused a lot more precisely with my left eye. No problems.
skrohmer Posted January 29, 2013 Share #11 Posted January 29, 2013 My left eye is better than the right one. I used my left eye with every kind of camera until I got the M-E and saw prints of my nose on the display . Now I'm using the right eye and it also works. kdriceman Posted January 29, 2013 Share #12 Posted January 29, 2013 Left handed. Right footed. Left eyed. A bit of nose smudging when using a rangefinder is the only (albeit minor) issue.
Bill W Posted January 29, 2013 Share #13 Posted January 29, 2013 Since I am right-eyed, I use my right eye with any type of viewfinder, be it a rangefinder or an SLR. Same here. I am left handed, right footed. I can actually do lost of things right handed except write.
tobey bilek Posted January 29, 2013 Share #14 Posted January 29, 2013 I covered the sapphire glass with a cell phone protector because nose grease is much easier to clean that way. Left eye dominant..

Artichoke Posted January 29, 2013 Share #17 Posted January 29, 2013 using my left eye more than the right in portrait orientation & my right eye more than the left when in landscape this allows me greater use of the non-viewfinder eye which I keep open as well as keeping my nose away from the LCD I found the Leica manual recommended method for portrait orientation ungainly and hold the camera with my right hand, using my thumb for the release when in portrait orientation, which I use a great deal with my Ms it helps that I had severe strabismus as a child, which wasn't corrected until I was about 6 years of age, so I early on developed means of suppressing vision in one eye or the other, which I have found very advantageous now
moreammo Posted January 30, 2013 Share #18 Posted January 30, 2013 I'm right eye dominate but i have always shot left eye'd with all my cameras, rangefinder, DSLR or even medium format. i was wondering this same thing recently and asked my dad and it turns out he does the same thing, neither of us know why. its possible mine is from years of seeing him do it then i did it with out thinking about it but i don't really know why. actually it works out for me though because i have an astigmatism in my right eye and my left is just fine. Michael Geschlecht Posted January 30, 2013 Share #19 Posted January 30, 2013 Hello moreammo, Welcome to the Forum, Part of what this Thread is dealing with is: There is no value judgement to left or right eye preference regardless of right or left eye dominance which has nothing to do with left or right handedness. None is a value judgement. None is better or worse. All are like ice cream: Whichever is right for you is what you should choose. If you change your preference or another works better another time then it is the right one then. Best Regards, Michael
FlashGordonPhotography Posted January 30, 2013 Share #20 Posted January 30, 2013 I'm naturally left eyed, although I think my right eye is the better of the two. When I got my M9 I started using it left eyed which I found uncomfortable. I have now trained myself to use my right eye with the M to the point that it is instinctive. I still use my left eye for an SLR. Gordon
