Saad Posted December 31, 2012 Share #1  Posted December 31, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would like to wish you all a very happy New Year and share with you a very interesting phenomenon. What appears to be an O Ring is showing up in such a frightening way right in the middle of the lens, but what is amazing is that it could not be detected in the photos unless I go above f8, otherwise it is as though it was not there. That, I did not know.  I bought it from B&H and it is on it's way back to them, meanwhile they had one in stock so I bought that until I get a refund..... I hope:confused:  It is a very beautiful lens. But my poor credit card. Welcome, dear visitor! Erik Gunst Lund Posted December 31, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted December 31, 2012 +1 Â I have never seen anything like that before, indeed it looks like an O-ring... Strange... Â Does the aperture function normally, all blades working etc?

algrove Posted December 31, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted December 31, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I must say I find it incredible that it got boxed up at the factory. Are you sure this was a new lens?
Erik Gunst Lund Posted December 31, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted December 31, 2012 It is pretty obvious from the image that it is a pristine looking lens. Surely it was not like this when it was put into the box at Leica, something went wrong later... Â No way is this normal, something has been assembled wrong and worked loose. Â Don't even think Loctite
Rick Posted January 1, 2013 Share #9 Â Posted January 1, 2013 Eric, you are not suggesting that this is a magical lens, are you?

biglou Posted January 1, 2013 Share #11 Â Posted January 1, 2013 I must say I find it incredible that it got boxed up at the factory. Are you sure this was a new lens? Â Once i opened the box of a brand new summicron m 35mm in the shop of a reputable dealer and the diaphragm was bent as if someone had is finger gone through it. It was looking like a tulip flower. Â Was done obviously before the glass parts where installed on both sides and passed all controls (or lack of)
jaapv Posted January 1, 2013 Share #12 Â Posted January 1, 2013 Looks like here is a rubber ring there that has partly jumped out of its retainer at some point. Weird.
Tonki-M Posted January 1, 2013 Share #13 Â Posted January 1, 2013 i wonder who signed the inspection paper on this particular one. Â should have kept it, i'm sure in 20 yrs, it's going to be a rare collectible for someone out here
Saad Posted January 1, 2013 Author Share #14  Posted January 1, 2013 Thank you all, I am in the habit of taking a video of the unboxing of such expensive items and it seems Erik is really close in his analogy.  I received the lens on 18 Dec 2012 with S/N 4172866. The lens is used on Sony NEX 7 & 6 until the New M is out.  As I came to move the aperture ring it was stuck, with some (not a lot) force it was freed. Indicating that the lens was assembled and tightened when some part of the lens was not properly seated. Few days later the O Ring comes unseated from its resting place. The lens was set to aperture f8 from the factory.  This means that after the lens was assembled it was put directly in the box. Perhaps the high prices of Leica lenses being due to additional and rigorous quality control, is a myth.  I chose a photo which was taken at f1.4 in the local fish market to show you all, that the only area where this gigantic thick line across the lens actually shows, is in the out of focus circles of light. So yes, sending a lens to be cleaned because of 30 or so clearly visible dust specs is not necessary at all. Welcome, dear visitor! Bill W Posted January 1, 2013 Share #15 Â Posted January 1, 2013 I really had to look and look till I saw the little lights with a slash through them. One also wonder that this cannot be the first time this has happened. Makes me want to go look at all my glass.
Stealth3kpl Posted January 1, 2013 Share #16 Â Posted January 1, 2013 For that money I'd expect the slash to be central Pete

tobey bilek Posted January 3, 2013 Share #18 Â Posted January 3, 2013 Someone left an assembly tool inside the lens. Â Even Leica is not perfect.
Bill W Posted January 3, 2013 Share #19 Â Posted January 3, 2013 It looked like it was something that was permanently attached and not a loose O ring. I assume you still get a new lens and not one that needs be taken apart and reassembled.
George Hart Posted January 4, 2013 Share #20 Â Posted January 4, 2013 Someone left an assembly tool inside the lens. Â Even Leica is not perfect. Â That would be my likely explanation. Â OP, any news of the upshot?
