iedei Posted December 5, 2012 Share #1 Posted December 5, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) my 40mm Summicron is definitely my 'go to' lens for the M8....and since i bought the lens several months ago, it brings up 35mm framelines on my M8. ...but recently i was testing the Super Rokkor 50mm on the M8 and found that after i took the 50mm off and put the 40mm back on----50mm framelines came up with the 40mm Summicron! I then proceeded to put the CV 35mm Nokton on the M8 which brought up 35mm framelines. When i took that off and put the 40mm Summicron back on------it brought back 35mm framelines. So my theory is that the M8 doesn't know how to handle the 40mm, and simply uses the framelines from the last lens that was on it. I don't know if this theory is something you all knew about.....but i tested it several times and it switched framelines every time. My 40mm Summicron is NOT modified in any way. Advertisement Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Hi iedei, Take a look here tricking the M8 with 40mm. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dpitt Posted December 5, 2012 Share #2 Posted December 5, 2012 AFAIK a 40Cron C should normally bring up 50 mm frames. If you do not turn it all the way, it can bring up 35 mm. Of course it can be modified to bring up 35 mm, even when fully locked. Maybe the frame selector of your M8 is sligthly stuck so that it 'stays' with 35 when last lens used was 35 mm. lct Posted December 5, 2012 Share #3 Posted December 5, 2012 Yes or perhaps the flange of your lens has been partially filed off. Does it look like this or shorter? Welcome, dear visitor! Erik Gunst Lund Posted December 5, 2012 Share #4 Posted December 5, 2012 The 35mm frame lines are active by default if no lens is mounted... Easy to check without a lens mounted, just flip the frame line selector and look inside the mount, the little 'feeler' rotates between the three settings... The feeler has tolerances for when it brings up what frame lines... exceed those and your off... Also you can carefully rotate the lens on the mount to see where the selector moves and look into the viewfinder and you will also see the frame lines shifting... Erik Gunst Lund Posted December 5, 2012 Share #7 Posted December 5, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) The lens is supposed to set/activate the frame lines only when mounted, it sould bring up 50mm lines. Sounds like a sticking/defective selector arm/feeler on the camera...
iedei Posted December 5, 2012 Author Share #8 Posted December 5, 2012 The lens is supposed to set/activate the frame lines only when mounted, it sould bring up 50mm lines.Sounds like a sticking/defective selector arm/feeler on the camera... well....when i switch from 35mm to 50mm, it easily switches from 35 to 50mm. Same when i go from 50mm to 35mm....but when i go to 40mm it sticks to the last set of framelines. if it was sticking, wouldn't it stick from 35 to 50? or 50 to 35 as well? could somebody else with a 40mm Summicron try this on their camera and see if it works or does anything similar? It should not 'stick' like you state it does... No need to test another body it's very simple mechanics.
wlaidlaw Posted December 5, 2012 Share #10 Posted December 5, 2012 Sounds a bit like my MATE on the M9. When you switch from 28 to 50, the 50 lines don't come up properly (ghostly outline) but when you switch from 35 to 50, they come up perfectly. The solution is either to flick the frame change lever or go slightly past 50 from 28 and then back again. The MATE works perfectly on my M8 and M4, so I would agree - a sticky frame change. Try flicking the lever like I do. I think the 40 should show the 35/135 frames. Wilson
lct Posted December 5, 2012 Share #11 Posted December 5, 2012 ...could somebody else with a 40mm Summicron try this on their camera and see if it works or does anything similar? Never seen this in 30+ years with my three copies of the 40/2. Does your sample makes a clear click when you mount it on your M8?
jaapv Posted December 6, 2012 Share #12 Posted December 6, 2012 It sounds like somebody tried to modify the mount and filed off about 1/10th of a mm short.

wlaidlaw Posted December 6, 2012 Share #14 Posted December 6, 2012 I had a similar problem this morning with the RF arm on my M8. I had left it on the windowsill of my study last night where the outside temperature dropped to around -7ºC. It would work from close to around 5 or 6 metres but if you took the lens to infinity, it would stick. An hour in the airing cupboard sorted it out but I feel a CLA of the RF mechanism may be calling. My local man Kelvin at Protech can do that for around £30 - £40.
