Thanks Chris,

Close shots are SX35FLE and APO50.

Stage view shots are APO50 and APO90.

EXIF is in the files so you should be able to see which is which.

Mostly shot wide open at ISO 3200.

Best regards

Trond

Wait until you've tried the 80-200 f4 ... :)

Hi Chris, could you please elaborate on this? I've been thinking of getting the 80-200 for landscapes, it just seems convenient to have a zoom for that type of work.

Still a work in progress but comparing IQ from the 80-200 with the Canon 70-200 L IS F2.8 on a 5D2 it's competitive. What I need is the R>M adapter so that I can use the lens with a monopod - but I plan to use it for documentary work, mainly in interiors. I'll report as I use it more.

NO NO NO!

I don't want to hear about it!

Seriously though I'm not tempted as I rarely use lenses longer than 90mm.

For the few days I had the 80-200/4 working on the M, before I returned the faulty R to M adapter to Leitax, I was most impressed. It shows up what a low contrast lens the 280/4.8 Telyt is, even the series 3 one I am using. I have given up on Leitax now and have put a 14642 R to M adapter on order with Ffordes.

Ian Broomhead at SRB Griturn says he should be able to amalgamate a Kippon Contax to Leica M adapter and a Jinfinance 28/90 LTM to M coded adapter Ring to give me a Contax to M adapter which will activate the R menu, all at a reasonable cost. I will wait until I get the R to M adapter and see if I can meet up with someone who has the Vario Elmarit R 28-90, to see how well I can focus it quickly with the EVF, before going down the Contax adapter route and buying a Vario Sonnar 28-85. The 28-85 as well as being a fraction of the price of the Vario Elmarit, is also a bit smaller and lighter.

Has anybody read this article

Interesting stuff on the new M240 and the 28-90mm lens.

Interesting article and thanks for posting it. He does come over as a bit of a Leica Fanboy. Gives Steve Huff some serious competition in the gushing stakes. :)

A propos using auto-focus lenses in manual mode, I had an interesting experience in Grays of Westminster (major London Nikon dealer) yesterday. I ended up with a choice between an earlier Nikkor 300 mm f/4.5 IF-ED and a later Nikkor 300mm f/4.0 ED-IF for around the same price. My first thought was "Go for the most recent, fastest glass... " However - when I tried both lenses on the body, the one that was DESIGNED for manual focus was so much nicer to work with. It has a very smooth focus action and a very long throw so fine focus is very easy. By contrast, the modern lens with Auto/Manual options was horrid to focus manually. The action is INDIRECT and the focus throw very short.

I bought the f4.5.

...

Darn, I have the Nikkor 300mm f/4.0 ED-IF. I was hoping that it would be usable.

The 2.8-4.5/28-90 Vario-Elmarit-R just arrived today. Pristine condition, original packaging & papers all intact, and looks like it's never been used.

I tested it on the M9 and Monochrom with an Andrea Lolli R-M adapter (thanks again Manolo) at 28-35-50-70-90mm set to infinity as I can't really compose due to finder intrusion by the lens.

I won't bore anyone with the test photographs but they're spectacular :)!

Now where's that M camera :( ?

Hey Mark who did you preorder the M with? My dealer told me last week that the new distributor may or may not let them be an authorised dealer so my preorder might end up being a lost cause :(..

Leica UK is certainly demanding that existing Leica dealers commit to purchasing/stocking a considerable amount of M or S equipment, before they will confirm their Premier Dealer status. If they are not premier dealers, they cannot now order M or S equipment. This happened to my local dealer, H.A.Baker, an excellent Leica dealer for many years. They could not afford what Leica wanted them to commit to, so now they just sell PanaLeica P&S cameras and second hand. I had to shift my M order elsewhere, luckily to another dealer I know and like (Ffordes), who performed admirably and got me an M in the first week.

I am not 100% convinced this is really in the interests of long term Leica customers (I had been buying from Bakers for 15+ years) but sounds more like an edict from the PE masters to maximise cash flow.

Thats a real shame, I don't know any other dealer but my current one says that if things don't go according to plan they do have connections with others that they could recommend to me although I doubt very much that I could get the M anytime soon. The dealer I preordered with has also been a Leica dealer for many years so I hope that Leica won't just turn their backs on them because of this change in distribution.
