chris_tribble Posted October 22, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted October 22, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Interested to know what the priorities are for those who are getting the M. So far I've been able to pick up a 2nd hand Olympus EVF-2, an R 80-200 f/4 ROM, an R APO 2x extender (I'm not sure how useful this is going to be!) and a Nikkor 300 mm f/4.5 IF-ED (Additional Information on Nikkor 300 mm f/4.5 ED, Nikkor 300 mm f/4.5 IF-ED & Nikkor 300 mm f/4.5). Â As I've got M lenses to cover from 21 to 135 + a Zeiss 18, it begins to feel like a useable system. I'm going to have to see if I can live without f2.8 with the long glass (here I really hope that the high ISO of the M lives up to expectations). If it all works out (and I'm happy with the EVF for the long lenses) I'll probably move away from Canon and have an M Based system.

tobey bilek Posted October 22, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted October 22, 2012 Just going to use my visoflex 65 to 560 all lenses+all adapters + tubes+short focus mounts+ bellows. Â Maybe someday I will get an M so I can use my 100 APO, but this camera is not an ideal solution.
theno23 Posted October 22, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted October 22, 2012 Do we know for use the Olympus viewfinder is compatible? Â I'm assuming it is, as they look the same, but it's possible there's some minor software difference or something. Â - Steve
pop Posted October 22, 2012 Share #4  Posted October 22, 2012 Question: Who makes the EVF2? Stefan Daniel: We buy the EVF2 from Olympus which is the best we can buy. We could see no need to make our own viewfinder.  Question: Does it have the same socket as the PEN?  Jesko v. Oeynhausen: Yes, it’s the same.  Maike Harberts: If you have an Olympus EVF, you can buy a LEICA M or an X2 to use it with. It’s the same EVF as the one used with the X2.  ref: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-news/2012/10/leica-photokina-qa-session-schopf-daniel/

JWW Posted October 22, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted October 22, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have also picked up a Leica R 80-200/4 and APO 2x. Tried them both out using the M9 and focus bracketing and was pleased with the results. Â I was afraid that if I wait until the M came out that some of the R lenses would become hard(er) to find. I don't see too many R APO lenses for sale, aside from the 180/3.4. I've also ordered a used Tamron adaptall R mount in case I want to use any Tamron lenses. Â I believe that should do it for now until the camera actually comes out.

johnbuckley Posted October 22, 2012 Share #9 Â Posted October 22, 2012 Chris - great thread. I have managed to find, at reasonable prices, the 180 f/4 lens, made in Germany, and the Vario-Elmar 80-200. The latter was made, as I understand it, in Japan by Kyocera, but I have been assured that it is a quite good specimen, "worthy of the Leica brand on it." I may have jumped the gun, as the M might not be available for months and months, but it did seem to make sense to pounce on available R lenses now before prices go up, which I assume they will do. gravastar Posted October 22, 2012 Share #10 Â Posted October 22, 2012 In anticipation I purchased a few weeks ago a 28-90mm f2.8-4.5 Vario-Elmarit-R ASPH and Leitax R-M mount (for 28/90 frame lines). I already have for many years the 80-200mm f4.0 Vario-Elmar-R, 21-35mm f3.5 - 4.0 Vario-Elmar-R ASPH and 100mm f2.8 APO-MACRO Elmarit-R. So I think I'm well covered for many applications for which the M series was not well suited. Â I've also ordered a Novoflex LEM/OM Olympus to Leica M Adaptor so that I can use the 24mm and 35mm Olympus shift lenses. Since they're retrofocus designs I'm hoping there won't be any sensor problems when the lens is shifted. Â I wonder if Leica will be able to support servicing R lenses which now have a new lease of life. I have a 35-70mm f/2.8 Vario-Elmarit-R ASPH which has either a flake of black paint or thunder fly between two elements. My dealer told me that Leica said they couldn't service it. However I've just seen a for sale posting on the RED User Group where Leica have recently CLA'd this lens. Â Bob.

MikeEvangelist Posted October 23, 2012 Share #12 Â Posted October 23, 2012 I picked up a nice 80mm Summilux R (which I thought I'd use on my NEX-7 in the interim.) But I like the lens so much, even on that small sensor, it made me curious to see how it would perform on a full-frame camera. So I bought a R8 to shoot with until the M arrives. Â Also got an Olympus VF-2 with optional eye cup.

The images taken by creative photographers with this lens I found on the internet were nothing short of magical. I'm just going to have to wait for the M as it sleeps in a dry closet. I was able to obtain one that looks like it has never been used with box, case, and papers.

Avatar, Search the web and check out the images. I think I checked out Flickr first. Also, don't forget to check the LFI galleries. darylgo Posted October 23, 2012 Share #17  Posted October 23, 2012 While traveling in Paris I purchased a Mint 180mm F2.8 Apo from the Leica store. When I tested it on my M9 I have found it to be less sharp than expected in the center. I called Leica in New Jersey and they indicated they will attempt to find the cause, so now I am in a quandary whether I should repair or return it. Any input about others similar experiences with lenses greatly appreciated.

giordano Posted October 23, 2012 Share #19  Posted October 23, 2012 Aside from the R lenses, does anyone no which longer lenses will work with the M? Will the Olympus, Sony, or Fujifilm lenses mirrorless lenses work?  Adapters are available or can readily be made for every or virtually every 35mm SLR lens ever made as long as it has integral, mechanical focus and aperture controls like the R lenses, and therefore for every other lens that can be fitted to 35mm SLRs (e.g. Hasselblad, Pentax 67). Adapters can in principle be made (and some are being made) for lenses without integral aperture controls (e.g. EOS, Nikon G, Contarex).  Lenses made for current mirrorless cameras won't work on the M because (a) their lens mount registers are too short, ( they rely on electronic control of aperture and focus from the camera body and © they're not designed for full-frame sensors.
Dougg Posted October 23, 2012 Share #20 Â Posted October 23, 2012 Aside from the R lenses, does anyone no which longer lenses will work with the M? Will the Olympus, Sony, or Fujifilm lenses mirrorless lenses work? No, the sensor-to-flange distance is shorter on those than for the M body.
