Leica M and M-E

I'm scratching my head for ways to find the money for what appears to be one of the best cameras ever released. The only downside I see is the lack of simplicity in comparison to my film M, which I certainly won't sell to fund it. The new M is the Mk7 VW Golf, whereas film M's are the Mk1 - both have their merits and place in place in history

and i was stupid enough to pay 1500 quid for asensor upgrade which was supposed to increase high (?) iso performance but in reality did so only by 1/3 of a stop ---))))

Yeah, despite being in the sensor business, Kodak chose Fill Factory when they decided to go full frame. It was a CMOS chip not CCD BTW. I'm assuming they've learned something in ten years or so and this sensor is a lot better than that one.

At least yours had a Nikon body. Kodak loaned me a DCS/c (Canon version of the 14n on a Sigma body.) I used it for about a week alongside my 1Ds. The body was terrible compared with the 1Ds and I hated the images too. Color shifts... especially with TS lenses and lots of aliasing colors and other issues. Whereas the 1Ds was staggeringly good and very refined for its time.

I told my Kodak reps. what I thought as politely as I could.

There's a welcomed difference that people are overlooking between the M-E and the M9/M9-P and that's the shutter.

"For instance, the Leica M-E’s shutter action is extremely quiet."

"The mechanical yet almost inaudible sound signature of its shutter release remains as a reminder that this M too is a masterpiece of unparalleled craftsmanship."

The new M-E is clearly being marketed as having a quieter shutter and is described in the tech data .pdf as a "closed type focal plane shutter for classic image exposure, with external cocking mechanics."

That's a complaint I do have with the M9/M9-P. The shutter doesn't sound good at all to me. Maybe when the time comes, this new shutter can be installed in the current M9/M9-P (at shutter replacement time.)

I think it's a misprint in the sheet from the website. It says 42mm - which is the thickness of the new M - I am sure it will have the same size as the M9, i.e. 37mm. The weight is the same as for the M9.

Agree. It might not make much business sense to re-design the M9 into a technically identical but physically different M-E. If the parts are exactly the same, there probably would be no need for a different body. Leica has the process down, they know the parts and have a very solid product. Why change? Noted on the side, they have already issued a similar product with the Meisterstueck Anniversary edition for Meister Foto in Berlin and Hamburg earlier this year.

I'm wondering when Leica will offer an M9 -> M-E upgrade option. It should make all of the current M9 owners who covet the latest and greatest real happy.

Cheers, Chris

Interesting to watch and then you see the new M at 03:13 with all the add ons like viewfinder and baseplate and it starts to look like a DSLR! So happy they kept a classic M9/M-E line ;)

What do you mean? They always were like this. Add on optical viewfinders, Visoflex, and various base plates- Leicavits and Leicamots. These are simply more modern variations.

Do you remember the fuss that was made about the extra 2mm height of the M6TTL compared with the M6?:)

Not to mention the complaints in the 50s about the huge M3 compared to the real IIIf; and of course the M5 which really wasn't much larger than the M4. I heard the same depth concern for the M9 from M3 purists.

Make any change and people complain.

You are right, the description differs.

Though as long as I havn't heard the new M-E, I think it's marketing spreech, when they write about the silent shutter release.

Did you hear the new shutter to compare it to the M9/P?!?

Can't confirm the above: for me the M9-shutter sounds very good.

It weights almost a 100g more?

Well, I am not sure...

If I want to get rid of the lever for frame selection of my M9, I don't need an upgrade, I just need a pliers. I'd rather prefer a M-E upgraded with frame-selectors, if I'd ever think of buying one.
