SUMMILUX-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH - lens hood question

Hello everyone, this is my first posting here and hope its placed correctly.

 

I just recently purchased a Leica SUMMILUX-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH lens and the first thing that I became aware of is the potential damage to the built in lens hood...

my 35mm lux has rub marks on the hood and knowing a ding or two is inevitable, makes sense to keep a hood on...but I know that it can be replaced easily..

 

for any of you tenured users out there...any advice?

anyone out there obsessive and rather opt to use a screw on hood instead?

 

I really like to take care of my lenses and well, not every day that I spend this much cash on a single lens.

I'm not sure in which kind of action you get when you take pictures.

I have not had any issues with the build in, slide out hood with the two 50mm 1.4 ASPH and non ASPH I have. Too be honest a screw on is better since you'll use it. Very often I don't even use the slide out hood.

 

Maybe there is a higher risk of scratching the lens when you change a lens.

There are pros and cons as always. As is, the built-in hood is more or less useless as a shade and hardly much more so as a bumper but it has the merit of existing, of taking no room in the bag and of allowing the use of an accessory hood if need be. The latter won't be the universal panacea though as it will be a screw-on hood anyway and such hoods may ruin the filter thread of the lens in case of drop or bump. Here a Schneider hood (now B+W #950) on a Summilux 50/1.4 pre-asph. It fits the asph version as well.

The wonky slide-out hood is a pathetic bit of 'engineering' for such a costly lens.

Further to Ict's comment on after market hoods, the B+W, Bower or Heliopan series rubber lens hoods aren't bad since they incorporate metal to screw into the lens. The Bower and B+W will also take filters outboard if wanted. The Heliopan's threads are not too deep so I have never tried that on the Heliopan rubber hood. I just screw it into my UVa. Also the Bower 46mm (HR46) seems to me to have the sturdiest of rubber when popped out as it will hold the weight of my 50/1.4 front lens down (without camera of course) without collapsing, so far.

Problem with most rubber hoods is they block a lot the viewfinder. Here an Heliopan 39mm on a Summicron 35/2 IV.

thanks for the thoughts everyone.

Ive been walking about with the built-in hood locked in the forward position and it doesn't feel like it will protect the front element much.

I put a B&W uv on the lux [as with all my other lenses] but might opt for a 3rd party metal hood ..

 

Im heading to india in a few weeks.. last time I was there, all my front elements had finger prints from kids ..sneaky little buggers.
