UliWer Posted March 8, 2012 Share #3 Posted March 8, 2012 1. S mode - not sure what you mean; "S" for single shots was always there, "Snapshot" (not sure how it was shortened) came only with M8.2. 2. Discreet mode - came with a gratis firmware update for M8. 3. Auto ISO - came with a gratis firmware update for M8. 4. Framelines accurate at 2 meters instead of 0.7 m - 2 m only for M8.2, you could upgrade an M8 with new frames. 5. Optimized shutter to reduce noise and vibration - only for paid upgrade 6. 1/4000s shutter speed instead of 1/8000s - M8 had 1/8000, paid "downgrade" to 1/4000 possible 7. 1/180s flash sync instead of 1/250s - M8 had 1/250, paid "downgrade" to 1/180 poosible (together with No. 5-6). 8. Top Main switch with more pronounced detent mechanism - not sure what you mean 9. Sapphire LCD - only for paid upgrade 10. Black paint finish - don't know 11. Black Leica logo with black paint finish - don't know 12. Smaller battery charger with 80% charge display - came with M.8.2, but you could buy it seperately for M8;) P.S.: Perhaps you can search in the year 2008 for threads about the paid upgrades and later for the firmware version which brought Auto Iso etc.
bocaburger Posted March 8, 2012 Share #4 Posted March 8, 2012 There were twelve differences between M8.2 and M8 if i'm not wrong.Do you recall which were implemented in the M8u? Being that it was up to the owner to choose, the permutations will vary between used M8 bodies. In other words, an M8 could have one or a combination of upgraded features and still be referred to as an "M8u".

Yes, i think there were three options for the upgrade: Sapphire LCD, Frames, Shutter and you could combine two of them or all of them.

WestMichigan Posted March 9, 2012 Share #12 Posted March 9, 2012 Might it I inquire what the package cost you? Not a purchase on my option or interest tree lacking winning the lottery or somthing similar! But I suspect there are other curious souls like me interested in the number. papimuzo Posted March 10, 2012 Share #13 Posted March 10, 2012 No problem: it costed to me 2,525.90 CHF including taxes (TVA) work done at Solms but the transaction was made through the Swiss Leica Camera AG. Must say that this later was excellent and very informative. Rmk: 1CHF ~ 1.095 USD as today

ho_co Posted March 11, 2012 Share #15 Posted March 11, 2012 Suggestions: Points 5, 6, 7 all refer to the same thing: Slower, quieter shutter. Point 8 was variable; late M8s all had the firmer detent, and it can be done by request on any camera. Point 10--I think it was the same black paint for M8 & M8.2; black chrome was first offered again with M9P, silver paint with M9. (May be wrong here.) Point 12 amounted to the discontinuation of the earlier charger. Interestingly, there have been more reports of problems with the later, daintier charger than with the original IIRC. Point 13--Which covering material varied with the color of the camera IIRC.
jaapv Posted March 11, 2012 Share #16 Posted March 11, 2012 The M8 was not offered in black paint.

papimuzo Posted March 11, 2012 Share #19 Posted March 11, 2012 Re the vulcanite: no my M8-u had the same cover than when bought new, the only remark I could make is that it seemed new (no trace of any injury...). In on word the M8-u looked as a new model... which was pleasant according to the new warranty.
Jeff S Posted March 11, 2012 Share #20 Posted March 11, 2012 Was there a firmware upgrade to provide the M8 with exposure compensation via the thumbwheel as with the M8.2? Jeff
