mitchell Posted February 28, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 28, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've loaned a friend my M6ttl. Since I brought the M8, I never use it. Â She is an university art dept. professor of photography. She's never shot Leica before. Â I'm going to send her my 50 summicron when I receive my new 50 Lux which is on order, but I'm wondering which other lens she might buy. She doesn't have a big budget so we're talking second hand. Are there some great older lenses that are cheap:? I think she might be interested in some of the older lens "looks." This will be her primary camera for a trip to Peru, Machu Pichu (sp?), and the Amazon. She'll probably take a small digital backup. Â Is there an M web site like Doug Herr's great R site? Â Thanks, Â Mitchell
philipotto Posted February 28, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 28, 2007 Mitchell, Â Have you see Leica M lenses price guide? It dosn't provide any information on the lenses attributes, but perhaps it can help narrow down choices by price. Â There are of course many other Leica lenses not mentioned on the guide, including screw-mount lenses, that can be used via adapter plate. Â Cheers, Philip
chrism Posted February 28, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted February 28, 2007 If she's on a budget she should be looking at the CV line of lenses. For a small investment she could read the comparisons Sean has so laboriously made. Â Chris
woodyspedden Posted February 28, 2007 Share #4  Posted February 28, 2007 If she's on a budget she should be looking at the CV line of lenses. For a small investment she could read the comparisons Sean has so laboriously made. Chris  Second this one. Sean has done the Leica world a real favor, at his expense, to find the best lenses at realistic prices.  You should certainly look at the used market for Leica lenses but you will likely find no quality lenses (still in production) for less than 50 % of current list price. This 50% will, in almost all cases, be substantially higher than brand spanking new CV lenses.  I am a very big Leica lens fan and think they are the reason d"etre for the M bodies. However I would suggest that you get Leica for the choice of basic lenses for the M8, which would be the 24/28/35 (your choice.) one of the 50's (probably start with the old Elmar which is still in production) and the 75 or 90. Now you have the option of using the CV for the wide (best choice I believe is the CV 15 4.5 Heliar) and one of the other such as the 28 1.9 Ultron, and one of the longer lenses. It ultimately comes down to budget but Sean has proven with the click of a finger that he can take client happy wedding photos with the CV's and no complaints. That is the ultimate test.  Hope this helps somewhat  Summary....ultimate target is the Leica lenses. Probably 28 cron. 35 lux, 50 lux and 90 APO. Transition path is CV equivalents and when you think you can really see the difference start the transition to the Leica primes. Bet me that your clients won't see much difference. What do you think Sean? These CV's are truly remarkable products and at prices that seem almost unreal. For instance at 70 years old I can justify the Zeiss 15 2.8 because I don't have the time to go through the transition I describe. However I use the 15 4.5 heliar almost every day and I don't have an unhappy moment with it. And the difference is $3500 vs $400. Good grief........I have to have some special needs to ever get the payback on this lens. I would be happy to send files to people on the fence to show the remarkable possibilities of this lens. And I have yet to try the 12mm which I understand to be fantastic.  Let them fight it out.........we are the winners   All the best  Woody

One can find in the marketplace lot of items to buy : I think that in the range of less than 1000$ total you can buy some good 28 (2,8) + 90 (2,8 or 4) or + 135 (f4, the goggled 2,8 is good but, again, strange for a Leica Newcomer...) cbretteville Posted February 28, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted February 28, 2007 If she likes the 50mm focal length the current 50 Elmar-M is a great buy. A wonderful little lens. They can be found second hand at a good price. The problem with the Leica 35s are that the decent ones are too sought after by collectors making then expensive. The CV35 2.5 pancake w/M-mount is an alternative.
tom0511 Posted February 28, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted February 28, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) For many years I just used a 35cron (from the70s) and a 90/2.8 (pretty old version) . This combo is cheap to get and does a lot.

I intended the lady-in-thread would have retained your Cron 50...if not so, totally agree with the above statement: I cannot remember how a lot of times I went out with my favourite "light set" : 35+90 !!! Lot of possibilities to buy good user items at good prices.

mitchell Posted February 28, 2007 Author Share #10 Â Posted February 28, 2007 Thanks everyone. Â I just bought a 50/1.4 asph (photovillage happened to get one in today when I called) so I'm sending my friend my 50/2. Â The M6ttl I'm loaning her has the .85 veiwfinder. Â My question was really about good cheap older lenses. She very experienced and will know the focal lengths she wants. Â It seems new CVs might be as good as the Leicas old enough to be as cheap. She may like the look of the older lenses. Â I'm very excited to see what she thinks. She's been shooting and showing for 30 yrs. but never Leica. Â Best, Â Mitchell
