Actually, I think it's you that doesn't understand. There's no problem or hurt in asking, but you failed to and ignored invitations to properly introduce yourself.

No past history on this forum, no name, no links provided to personal website or Facebook, Flickr, or anything that would endear yourself to this community and make you appear to be genuine in both your intent and your character. And there was no thought or proposal given for how to make such a loaner work for the concerns of both parties.

Furthermore, your quip about expecting the negative reaction that you got, reflects poorly on a character we have nothing else to go on. If you're not willing to understand and adjust to the reservations of the people that you are asking for help, then I don't know how you can expect anything but a negative reaction.

Aside from borrowing a camera outright, you seemed to ignore some very practical advice and professional experience that some of these folks took the time to share with you. You might want to start by acknowledging that.

When Steve Jobs asked Bill Hewlett from HP for spare parts, it was not done in a vacuum and with the complete absence of personal connection, like you did. Also, you need to understand that those are very different times. Scam internet proposals from faceless people run rampant today. Also unlike that situation, you are not asking a large corporation for a few spare parts, you're asking regular people who've spent thousands of dollars on their own gear that may in some way be rather precious to them and their livelihood. And it is not for you to judge whether or not it should be precious to them.

Dismiss it if you wish, but my advice to you in the future is to know and respect your audience. If you don't, you're going to meet with a lot of closed doors.

I do believe there is a website on my public profile.. and i did say i was from grand rapids michigan, what else should i give away on a public forum? Possibly my social security number?

Im sorry, I was being 100% sarcastic and a jerk. If I did have that setup I would probably have indispensable income and send you one to keep. Good luck.

Well, here is an example of what's required prior to rental by a reputable company (that rents Leica). Just common sense, and good business, when one deals with strangers.

If you don't understand the need for these many precautions, then you're also unlikely to understand many of the comments already presented here.

In that case, carry on enjoying your humble Nikon.

I am amazed that you are surprised that people won't consider lending their stuff to a complete stranger.

I am not surprised. And no, if i were a working photojournalist i would not lend out my gear either. Like i said earlier, the purpose of this question was to see if there were people that were WILLING. I would not ask a person who NEEDS there gear to lend it to me. I wasn't surprised that people wouldnt let me try there gear, i was surprised at some of the nasty responses I got back, if you couldn't help me with the question then leave it alone, no need to snap back. I am not a whiny, sulky, or greedy person.

I never said you were. I'm not "snapping".

I do think you are very naive. Nothing wrong with that, provided you understand why people respond the way they do, when you ask to borrow thousands of [insert your own currency here] worth of kit.

Leicaluke,

Yes some of of us do lend bits of kit to people we know well. I currently have my silver 50 summicron on loan to a good friend for a few weeks. However I know that if he were to damage or lose this, then I would have immediate redress.

I think if you had been on this forum for some time and got to know a few guys/gals pretty well, then maybe someone might lend you something for a while. Sadly though, society has changed; whereas before one might trust people to behave honourably, too many people abuse that trust.

So my advice is to go and spend some time shooting with some of the Leica folk around your area. Get to know them and you might be surprised. Good luck

Well anyways, thank you to all who gave helpful tips and pointers. I may try a zorki or fed like some have suggested, although i hear they tend to grind your film. I have seen this robert white advertisment at the top of this page.. looks like i could rent a m9 for 100$ a week, anyone have experience with that?

FWIW, I didn't think the OP's original request all that strange. Perhaps strangely put, but in essence a sensible (if over optimistic) request. This is easy for me to say because I don't live in the States let alone in his area, but I can't see the harm of meeting up with another forum member, should one choose, and exchanging cameras for a few hours while walking around, getting to know each other, stopping off for coffee etc....

One might almost think that that was the kind of thing photography meets thrived on.

Read his initial post, where his request was for "a few days." If you lived near him, would you move into his place, or ask him to move into yours?

Try calling around to these places and see if any carry Leica and have anything in stock:

Michigan Camera Shops

Also ask if they can put you in touch with the regional Leica rep - (s)he may be able to get you a loaner, after proper vetting. Or at least meet up with you during a periodic visit to a store, with a "factory" demo camera you can try.

or try Helix, Calumet or Central Camera in Chicago. Yeah, it means a weekend, but when I was a starving student in remote Southern Illinois, I used to make pilgrimages to Chi-town for good gear.

Leica does have in-store demos. And "Leica Akademie" events where one can try out a lot of stuff over a day - unfortunately the nearest to you is also in Chicago, and not until August.

Alum,

That's what I hinted at. I've tried stuff out at Leica forum meets (I wouldnt want to take any away because I really wouldn't want the trouble if I did damage or even mark someone else's gear in some way! Also I think one tends to notice 'defects' that weren't there before when somethings been out of sight foe a while - I always find a new scratch/chip on the car after it's been in the garage!).

To the OP, your response won't endear you to others here but you could have tried setting up a forum meet where you could've got to play with an M for a while. Might still be worth a shot!

well i just purchased a Fed 2 and Zorki 2.. and i hear the fed 2 is close to leica build quality.. should be a good experience.

I have no idea what the current market value is for these items, but I would have to think that your money would have gone much further and your experience would have been immensely more gratifying with a user IIIf or similar and a 50 Elmar...

they are extremely inexpensive. And yes, the fed 2 is very much like the leica III series (that is what people have compared the build quality too) not to mention i could put a leica 50mm screw mount on it if i so desired.

From Wiki..."FED and Zorki cameras had lenses with the same thread as Leicas, but correct focusing with German lenses on Russian bodies and vice-versa is not guaranteed, as the different rangefinder cam size can prove problematic, and slight differences exist in the distance between the mounting point of the lens and the film. Quality control on the Russian cameras was notoriously poor."
