La Morte Posted January 20, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted January 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) On the Leica site you can log in and register your Leica equipment. What will be the use?, and will they let you know if you register stolen, fake or grey products? Is this a set from them to track sales of equipment? Advertisement Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Hi La Morte, Take a look here Registering Leica products, any use?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
elgenper Posted January 20, 2012 Share #2  Posted January 20, 2012 ... will they let you know if you register stolen, fake or grey products?...  Can´t answer explicitly for Leica (never lost anything yet... ), but when I sold a Nikon D200 a few months ago, I got a message from Nikon after a while that someone was trying to register it again, and they wanted to know if it was still mine (I had plain forgotten I had registered it). I replied that it was sold, and the new owner was a legitimate one.  I´m convinced that Leica´s level of security is at least as high. At least, all my gear is registered. Â Here in the US, by registering with Leica, you put in place a Passport Warranty that covers you worldwide. Remember there is a 2 to 3 year warranty by Leica (I guess depending on country & product) which covers you wherever you go. So if you did not send in the warranty card and had to call them about some mishap or whatever, they would not know if you were legitimate since they have no name to attach to a specific product Serial Number. At least that's the way I read it. Â Yes it probably helps them marketing wise, but so what if it might make YOUR life easier someday.
TomB_tx Posted January 20, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted January 20, 2012 Another advantage is that there is then a record of your models and serial numbers available from anywhere, if you ever need to make an insurance or theft report.
Dannybuoy Posted January 20, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted January 20, 2012 I registered mine to get the Lightroom 3 serial number. It also made me feel nice :-)
lct Posted January 20, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted January 20, 2012 When registering your second hand M8 you may have the surprise to get two IR-cut filters for free if a previous owner did not ask them before you.
StephenPatterson Posted January 20, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted January 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you are only buying Leica products to resell on ebay then there is no need to fill out the warranty cards or register online. For everyone else it lets Leica know who you are and how many items you have bought. For those of us here who are legitimate users and spend thousands (or tens of thousands) of dollars/euros/pounds on Leica lenses and cameras how can this be a bad thing? jdlaing Posted January 21, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted January 21, 2012 When registering your second hand M8 you may have the surprise to get two IR-cut filters for free if a previous owner did not ask them before you. Â Yes!
La Morte Posted January 21, 2012 Author Share #9 Â Posted January 21, 2012 Thanks guys. All good reasons and it makes it a bit clearer for me. Got a new 35 Lux last week and thought I will ask. Funny though how all dealers said it could only arrived in June, but as soon as I paid a decent sized deposit it mysteriously appeared the next day, with a 1000 Dollars increse from the old prize of cause! jaques Posted January 21, 2012 Share #10 Â Posted January 21, 2012 When registering your second hand M8 you may have the surprise to get two IR-cut filters for free if a previous owner did not ask them before you. Â I can vouch for this- I got the pleasant surprise. Â also when I sold my old m9 the new buyer tried to register it but could not- I had to log in and remove it- then he was able to register it. jbuchow Posted January 21, 2012 Share #11 Â Posted January 21, 2012 Is it adequate to register online (owners.leica-camera.com) or should one send in the registration card(s) as well?
lct Posted January 21, 2012 Share #12 Â Posted January 21, 2012 Online is OK but you'll have to scan the page of your warranty card with the bar code labels on.
Paulus Posted January 21, 2012 Share #13 Â Posted January 21, 2012 Online is OK but you'll have to scan the page of your warranty card with the bar code labels on. Â To me Leica told, and mailed me, that the moment I fill in the serial number of camera or lens, they register it to my name and it was , when I did a check. Especially the MP which gets 5 years of garantie if you just fill in the serial number and your name by internet.
lct Posted January 21, 2012 Share #14 Â Posted January 21, 2012 Leica (Solms) emailed me the contrary about a s/h M8.2. They needed to be sure before sending me wo filters for free then.
StephenPatterson Posted January 21, 2012 Share #15 Â Posted January 21, 2012 Is it adequate to register online (owners.leica-camera.com) or should one send in the registration card(s) as well? Â I called Leica NJ and asked this same question and was told that they needed the warranty/registration cards mailed in. They will send you passport warranty cards for the lenses, but you will not receive any documentation for camera bodies. Â I also registered online with the Leica Owners Site, as this gets you your software downloads and LFI subscription.
Ecar Posted January 21, 2012 Share #16 Â Posted January 21, 2012 I register all my Leica products. This gives me a single place to store all information regarding my Leica gear. I actually also write the price I paid in the notes, just to remind me how much I have spent - or how crazy the prices of used lenses have become lately. Pity you can't add non-Leica lenses - I know one couldn't expect that, but it would be convenient to keep everything in one place.

StephenPatterson Posted January 25, 2012 Share #18 Â Posted January 25, 2012 Interesting. It is probably the reason why I was not able to register online my second hand M6TTL! Â You can register it, and you should. Send Leica a letter with a photo of the camera and your documentation, perhaps a hand written bill of sale from the original owner. Leica will then change their records showing you as the owner. If the camera ever needs service, or God forbid is every stolen, this can only help. Redridge Posted January 26, 2012 Share #19 Â Posted January 26, 2012 registered +1, on free LFI 6mo subscription and software.... they also email FW updates. Def worth registering.
