Which Frames Lines on M8 & 21mm

Hi Giacomo,

The widest framelines on the M8 is for 24mm. I think that for anything wider, the camera framelines do not change i.e. they are on default, which is 35mm. You need to use an external finder for 21mm framelines.

Have been rationalizing lens choices and experimenting with 21/25/28mm lenses/frame lines and finders.

For ten feet and further, a 21 mm finder made for FULL frame shows significantly less the actual picture on reduced sensor M8. I tried the old 21/24/28 zoom finder and and the old metal 21. I have not checked for under 10 feet.

I would purchase a zoom wide finder from Camera Quest and calibrate it for a few distances like infinity 10/6/4 feet. There is one that starts at 18 mm.

Accurate framing is not and can never be the forte of the M camera due to the fact the camera does not see thru the lens to align near and far objects and field size changes based on focus distance (every lens acts as a zoom lens as it is focused).

Accurate framing is achieved by my Nikon D3 and D7000. Most reflex cameras are around 95/98%.

Sorry ??? I use my old 21mm Leitz finder with the CV 15 onto M8 and it is a good reference... how is possible that a 21 FF finder does frame LESS than a 21mm on M8, which has the FOV of a FF 28 ???

I can`t explain except to state results. I am guessing the lines are set to MFD area and I am working at infinity and 10 feet in which case the finder shows too small an area. I never use wide lenses at MFD so distance is what is important to me.

All I did was line up the left and right edges at well defined points in the finder, make an exposure and look at the image on back the camera and recheck the well defined points.

I don't know why the 28mm lines are brought up with the M8. I am thinking of getting my 21mm lens modified to bring up the 24mm lines instead.

This is a lot closer to the view versus the 28mm lines. I often just tab the lines to the 24 to compose inside the viewfinder. Basically as long as your composition is within the outside edge of the 24mm lines, you definitely have it on the sensor. You can even learn how much space you have between the edge of the viewfinder and the 24mm line.

Would be interesting indeed if the 35mm framelines don't bother you but are you sure the camera will do the proper corrections then? Just asking as i don't know if the corrections are determined by the coding alone or by both coding and 28/90 flange.

It's your choice, of course, but doing so will likely reduce its value when/if you decide to sell it. It's probably better just to pull the frame preview lever out to the 24/35 position as you've been doing. Just my opinion; you've obviously given it a great deal of thought.

I have a 24mm on the M8 and find it a little difficult to frame, they are so far to the edge, so difficult to see all without panning the frame by eye if you follow. I am getting used to it though.

I would probably prefer the 28 lines as they are comfortably far away from the image edge. I would shoot what you see and any unwanted extra can be understood over time, if you are carefully framing it might be a different story. Better to have too much than too little ?
