mawe3000 Posted December 17, 2011 Share #1 Posted December 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have recently bought a (hardly) used M8.2 with 'Leica' script engraved on the top plate. It's also in black chrome rather than black paint finish. Does anyone know about such a special edition?
Advertisement Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Hi mawe3000, Take a look here M8.2 special edition?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Andreas.Pichler Posted December 17, 2011 Share #2 Posted December 17, 2011 Maybe the Isetan Special Edition with new leatherette? http://www.hypebeast.com/image/2009/01/leica-isetan-m82-camera-1.jpg
WestMichigan Posted December 17, 2011 Share #3 Posted December 17, 2011 Odd it does seem. I have a recollection that in some manner it had been possible to get script engraved M8.2's for an upcharge at time of ordering. Can't vouch to the veracity of my recall on that point. Possibly it is, like has been noted, it is a Special Edition someone had the good taste to remove the unpleasant red leatherette from. (Distinctly ewwwww in my considered opinion) R. in Mi. I have recently bought a (hardly) used M8.2 with 'Leica' script engraved on the top plate. It's also in black chrome rather than black paint finish. Does anyone know about such a special edition? lct Posted December 17, 2011 Share #4 Posted December 17, 2011 Must be an updated M8 with personal engraving on top plate. Official M8 upgrade info for US customers - Leica User Forum
Erik Gunst Lund Posted December 17, 2011 Share #5 Posted December 17, 2011 Check the Menu, you don't have the snapshot option... then it's M8u and not M8.
lct Posted December 17, 2011 Share #6 Posted December 17, 2011 Contrary to the M8.2, the updated M8 has no "S" engraving between "A" and "4000" on the shutter speed dial AFAIK. Welcome, dear visitor! mawe3000 Posted December 18, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted December 18, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's definitely an M8.2 because it has an 'S' option on the dial (and an 'M8.2' engraving on the black accessory shoe). It's also not the red leatherette version because the engraving looks different (only 'Leica', not 'Leica Camera AG Germany'.
lct Posted December 18, 2011 Share #8 Posted December 18, 2011 Are you sure it is not black paint? Engravings on top plate have always been made to order by Leica, including for the M8.2, but i'm not aware of any black anodized M8.2. Only paint (black, olive or white) and silver AFAIK but i may be wrong.

mawe3000 Posted December 18, 2011 Author Share #10 Posted December 18, 2011 Here's it next to my "normal" M8.2 to show the different finish. Welcome, dear visitor! lct Posted December 18, 2011 Share #11 Posted December 18, 2011 Do you notice the same difference on bottom plates?
mawe3000 Posted December 18, 2011 Author Share #12 Posted December 18, 2011 Yes, same with the bottom plates.
lct Posted December 18, 2011 Share #13 Posted December 18, 2011 Aside from a matter black paint or black anodized M8 plates, i have no explanation.

mawe3000 Posted December 19, 2011 Author Share #16 Posted December 19, 2011 Thanks, I think the same, therefore my "old" M8.2 will appear in the classifieds soon
Shade Posted December 26, 2011 Share #17 Posted December 26, 2011 That is indeed very wierd. It doesnt have a special edition serail mumber for sure though. Perhaps it was sent for personalization to Leica, instead of having just the engraving done, the previous owner had the top an bottom plate redone. It would be probably nice if you could ask a leica rep you know to track down the serial number of the camera instead, then you might get a more viable answer. Mstephens Posted December 27, 2011 Share #18 Posted December 27, 2011 Did you buy it from Dale Photo? If not, then there are at least two of them, a I remember seeing one of these for sale a few weeks ago, with the script on the top plate.
mawe3000 Posted January 2, 2012 Author Share #19 Posted January 2, 2012 I bought it from a pawnshop on ebay, so there's no possibility to ask the previous owner. I will, however, try and ask the Leica CS. It's possible that it was redone in Solms as Shade suggests, as it has approx. 4000 actuations, but looks like new. jaques Posted January 4, 2012 Share #20 Posted January 4, 2012 I had a black M8.2 and mine was black chrome... I sold it unfortunately. I just assumed all m8.2's were chrome not paint?
