M8.2 special edition?

Odd it does seem.

I have a recollection that in some manner it had been possible to get script engraved M8.2's for an upcharge at time of ordering. Can't vouch to the veracity of my recall on that point.

Possibly it is, like has been noted, it is a Special Edition someone had the good taste to remove the unpleasant red leatherette from. (Distinctly ewwwww in my considered opinion)

R. in Mi.

I have recently bought a (hardly) used M8.2 with 'Leica' script engraved on the top plate. It's also in black chrome rather than black paint finish. Does anyone know about such a special edition?

Contrary to the M8.2, the updated M8 has no "S" engraving between "A" and "4000" on the shutter speed dial AFAIK.

Are you sure it is not black paint?

Engravings on top plate have always been made to order by Leica, including for the M8.2, but i'm not aware of any black anodized M8.2. Only paint (black, olive or white) and silver AFAIK but i may be wrong.

Here's it next to my "normal" M8.2 to show the different finish.

That is indeed very wierd. It doesnt have a special edition serail mumber for sure though. Perhaps it was sent for personalization to Leica, instead of having just the engraving done, the previous owner had the top an bottom plate redone. It would be probably nice if you could ask a leica rep you know to track down the serial number of the camera instead, then you might get a more viable answer.

I bought it from a pawnshop on ebay, so there's no possibility to ask the previous owner. I will, however, try and ask the Leica CS.

It's possible that it was redone in Solms as Shade suggests, as it has approx. 4000 actuations, but looks like new.
