Alberti Posted December 16, 2011 Share #21 Posted December 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) again one for 28 mm on M8. You can crop the image later sufficiently to zoom in without any effects on the image quality. And a cron is preferable to F 2.8 because the one lens must support you at all times! JeTexas Posted December 16, 2011 Share #22 Posted December 16, 2011 The Voigtlander Ultron 28mm f2 is on mine 90% of the time now.
john_newell Posted December 17, 2011 Share #23 Posted December 17, 2011 Except for grim light, the 28-35-50mm Tri-Elmar, which translates approximately to 37-47-66mm. As a matter of personal habit, vision and perspective, if fixed/single focal length, Summilux 50mm.
IWC Doppel Posted December 17, 2011 Author Share #24 Posted December 17, 2011 So far I have a 28mm summicron and I have just bought a luvley 35 Asph that is as new in silver (6 weeks old !) Looking at the detailed specs this equated to 37mm and 47mm. I will see how I get on with these two (plus a borrowed pre asph 35mm Summicron) and keep an eye out for 50mm Silver Summicron Looking at peoples answers it does look that the classic 35/50/75 or 90 can be achieved with 37, 47 and 69mm using the 28,35 and 50 Cron (actual FL are 28.5, 35.3 and 52.3) The 75's measure up closer to 75mm actual so I can go smaller or larger to to hit 75-90 using Leica glass, either 69mm or 100mm It would be great to borrow a lens to try, but in reality for me I think I will buy at the right price then sell if I don't use enough or find no need. Keep the opinions coming in, it's very helpful

Erik Gunst Lund Posted December 17, 2011 Share #26 Posted December 17, 2011 Currently 28 2.8 Elmarit Asph Small light weight package to go. Sharp and contrasty images.
Cyril Jayant Posted December 18, 2011 Share #27 Posted December 18, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) +1 for the 35 f2 Summicron. It's always on my camera and it gets the job done when there isn't time to select a different focal length lens. +1 from me as it is always my best lens for M6 Negative and I prefer to have on M8 too. My other two lens 50mm and 90mm Summicron seems a bit too long for M8 but goes well with M6
Olsen Posted December 25, 2011 Share #28 Posted December 25, 2011 It's one obvious answer to this question: M8 + WATE (16-18-21 mm 4,0). Despite the crop factor, the M8 performs as one of the best wide angle solutions around with this lens.
jedi996sps Posted December 25, 2011 Share #29 Posted December 25, 2011 Hi IWC, I have 50asph luc, 50 series 1 nocti, 28asph cron, 28asph elmarit and 75asph cron, all used on my M8 which i have had since it first came out. Undoubtedly for me, this is the order in which i use my lenses and would hence keep, the first being the one i would live with if i could only have one lense. 50lux 28cron 28elmarit 50nocti 75cron I would also let my IWC Doppel go before my Porttugueser :-)
Shade Posted December 26, 2011 Share #30 Posted December 26, 2011 On the m8 i would put on 35/1.4 regardless of the brand. Because I like the natural feel of 50mm and I like shallow dof. I would always have a cheapskate wideangle with me for a just incase thing.

Lax Jought Posted January 1, 2012 Share #33 Posted January 1, 2012 On the m8 i would put on 35/1.4 regardless of the brand. Because I like the natural feel of 50mm and I like shallow dof. I would always have a cheapskate wideangle with me for a just incase thing. Same for me too. I have an M8.2 and I've only got one lens, the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4. I like the 50mm equivalent which is a compromise between the wider angles and the telephotos plus I really like my shallow DoF, and low light capabilities is an absolute must for me. Come to think of it, it's really low light that is first and formost in my lens choice, followed by DoF, and flexibility (ie. 50mm to suit most photographic needs). I've never felt the need for a wider angle, although at times I've wanted a telephoto so when I get another lens, it'll be a telephoto.
StephenPatterson Posted January 1, 2012 Share #34 Posted January 1, 2012 35 Summicron ASPH or Summilux ASPH FLE, depending upon budget, UNLESS you are 100% convinced that the M8 is the last digital M body that you will ever own and you have no desire to ever buy an M9, M10, M11, etc. If you are an "M8 for Life" person then the 28 Summicron is your lens. framestore Posted January 1, 2012 Share #35 Posted January 1, 2012 I would say, If you don't intended to upgrade the M8 to FF M body, then 28 Elmarit-m Asph or Summicron-m Asph ( i don't see BIG differences in these two lens) If you definitely upgraded the M8 to FF M body in the future, then 35 Summilux-m Asph Depends on your budget
IWC Doppel Posted January 2, 2012 Author Share #36 Posted January 2, 2012 I have decided to spend some time with a few and hopefully decide which ones to keep. I so suspect I will go M9 at some point, so will be prepared to keep one or two lenses and sell on others. This has been very useful to see where preferences lie. So far I have a 35 Summicron asph, a 28 Summicron asph, a 24 Elmarit M asph and looking for a 50mm lens. I am also still borrowing a MkIV 35 summicron I do like the idea of faster glass, so will settle on my favourite length an look for a 1.4 in this length (I hope it's not 24mm as I will need a mortgage !). I am very interested in Zeiss and CV and thinking of looking at the sonar 50/1.5 as I am considering a 50 cron or pre asph lux. I liked the review of the 35 f1.4 VC lens. If one comes up secondhand I might try one
lct Posted January 2, 2012 Share #37 Posted January 2, 2012 Beware of severe focus shifts with the CV 35/1.4 SC, at least my copy which gives out of focus results at f/2.8 and on.
Digital~Nomad Posted January 3, 2012 Share #38 Posted January 3, 2012 I'll kill 2 birds with 1 stone here..its my 1st posting so firstly hello to all and 2nd i bought a used M8 on Xmas eve with 4500 actuations on it with a single lens,a Zeiss 25mm f2.8.So far i'm just loving it.I sold a nikon d3,14-24mm,24-70,70-200mm because of an accident were i damaged my back and could take the weight of that system anymore... The M system has just surpassed my expectations so far..
AbbeyFoto Posted January 3, 2012 Share #39 Posted January 3, 2012 Soon after I got my M8.2 I found I loved using a screw mount 50mm Summicron with it. It just worked for me. Effective focal length of 67mm gave a new perspective but it was the ergonomics and quality of images that felt good. Subsequently a 35mm f2.5 Summarit worked well as did a 24mm f3.8 Elmar. Again the latter gave an interesting 32mm equivalent viewpoint. Many did not take to the cropping of the M8 cameras, for me it gave new options. I can note all these lenses are not large and the Summicron is collapsible, giving a compact system to carry around. Which one would I opt for now? The 50mm Summicron. JeTexas Posted January 3, 2012 Share #40 Posted January 3, 2012 Beware of severe focus shifts with the CV 35/1.4 SC, at least my copy which gives out of focus results at f/2.8 and on. I had severe focus shift and back focus problems with my CV 50/1.1. Don Goldberg at DAG camera found a loose lens element inside and then re-adjusted it. It's razor sharp now. You should have yours checked. It was only $125 to get mine fixed.
