Thanks Stuart and Brian for joining in. I really didn't intend for this to be difficult.

Yes it is an institutional building but not a museum.

Not a town hall or an administrative building but it is a facility governed by and part of a "district".

As stated earlier, the building was designed by a high profile Austrian architect, and is across the highway from another significant LA building by a well known Spanish architect.

Michael

I will be able to give the background when I get a chance to go back over my travel files. Instantly recognisable to me, but the building name escapes me. Someone else might know. I'm going to put another image up for identification. Completely different location.

Here goes.

Hello Gordon,

You are right - it is Florence. But I wonder if someone wants to research the specific building. It is one of the better known buildings in the city. Definitely not obscure.

Michael.

Your mystery image is of the Bargello museum in Florence. On a very wet day, I found it rather Non-descript from the exterior, but it has impressive features inside. Now the Museo Nazionale del Bargello. One of Italy's most important sculpture museums. Building created around 1250 as a fortress and landmark. Later (1261) used as the headquarters of the podestra, - the neutral city officer responsible for law and order. in 1502 it became a prison, and a law court. In 1859 the first Italian national museum was established here. Sculptures on display include examples by Michelangelo and others from the 14th to 16th century.
