shard Posted July 10, 2011 Share #164 Posted July 10, 2011 About counterfeit cards. They are everywhere and about 30 to 40% of the cards on the market are fake. They are being sold by legitimate sellers because the problem starts a lot higher up the supply chain. Some of them cannot be physically differentiated from real cards. You can bring it back to the vendor or even the manufacturer and they will still have problems identifying it as a fake, They will format and show the right capacity. Fakes can either take the form of a lower speed card sold as a high speed card, a lower capacity card sold as a high capacity card or both. Symptoms are normally slow or sluggish performance, corrupted files and missing files. Missing files is the biggest problem, Your fake card may really only have 128MB of storage but it has been programmed to think and show it has 32GB. When you format it, it shows 32GB, your computer and camera thinks it is a 32GB card. When writing to it, the first 128MB is fine. Anything after is lost with the camera or computer thinking it was a successful write. Another symptom is overwritten files. Once you use up the little bit of real storage it goes back and reuses it, causing files and cards to be corrupted.
Washington Posted July 10, 2011 Share #165 Posted July 10, 2011 Rip, For that reason I bought an older Ultra (II) card. Works most of the time - but not always. Depends on the buttons you push while images are being saved. There is something fishy in the firmware - that's my Zen thing. Best, K-H. What exactly do you mean about the buttons being pushed while images are being saved???
k-hawinkler Posted July 10, 2011 Share #166 Posted July 10, 2011 What exactly do you mean about the buttons being pushed while images are being saved??? Please read this http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/187415-m9-1-162-firmware-bug-just.html and the first reference in that post. K-H. Washington Posted July 10, 2011 Share #167 Posted July 10, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) shard, Then the answer to this problem is to buy your card directly from the manufacturer. I do not know if one can…. but I will be looking into it. Thanks.
Washington Posted July 10, 2011 Share #168 Posted July 10, 2011 OOOOOO-Spooky! Leica M-9 is neither listed or shows up in a search on the SanDisk website: everything else is there!!! Like I said: OOOOO.
k-hawinkler Posted July 10, 2011 Share #169 Posted July 10, 2011 OOOOOO-Spooky!Leica M-9 is neither listed or shows up in a search on the SanDisk website: everything else is there!!! Like I said: OOOOO. However, on Leica's website under FAQ, they recommend memory cards. I bought several different cards but only from Leica's recommended list. K-H. Washington Posted July 10, 2011 Share #170 Posted July 10, 2011 I just ordered an 8 gig Extreme directly from SanDisk…. we will see.
Chipkahn Posted July 10, 2011 Share #171 Posted July 10, 2011 Has anyone actually spoken with Leica about this issue. I talked with the store I have bought some of my lens and my M9. The fellow said he had experienced this problem but said he did not seem to think it was wide spread. But this conversation seems otherwise. What does Leica say? Chipkahn Posted July 10, 2011 Share #172 Posted July 10, 2011 All, I have written Leica to see what they have to say about this issue. Will report when I hear back.
eleanorbrown Posted July 10, 2011 Share #173 Posted July 10, 2011 I have only has issues with my extreme pro 32 gb cards, not my 16 or 32 gb ultra cards for what's worth. And yes I get everything from b& h. Eleanor
Washington Posted July 10, 2011 Share #174 Posted July 10, 2011 eleanorbrown, This is a question for everyone… eleanor’s post just made me ponder this again. What is the need for such huge capacity cards in a non-video camera? I an just wondering is all. Thanks.
scrubs Posted July 10, 2011 Share #175 Posted July 10, 2011 I also just had a new Sandisk Extreme Pro 8GB fail in my M9-P after begrudgingly following all recommended procedures of only deleting photos in camera etc.. (which annoys me. Why am i having to walk round the houses to avoid a problem that should not be there in the first place) I can not believe I have just spent £5400 on a camera and worried of using it for anything of importance incase the memory card fails! The biggest failure here Is Leica's refusal to aknowledge the problem or indeed fix it. All emails to Leica support went ignored. No doubt this will ignite some flaming from the fan boys, but when I spend that amount of money I expect a product that functions correctly. For a camera that prides itself on no fancy gimmicks just simple straight forward controls, I expect the few basic functions it has to work correctly. Not even gonna start about the magenta fringing issue. Taken with Summicron 35mm ASPH https://rapidshare.com/files/347668300/MagentaFringing.DNG Now, don't get me wrong, I like the camera, but kind of get tired of the constant defending of the brand from some people and I am not afraid to admit when spending a large sum of money if things are not up to par. Oh and the card was not counterfit and never had a problem with same brand and model in countless other cameras This is not a memory card problem. Washington Posted July 10, 2011 Share #176 Posted July 10, 2011 Well, if this turns out to be an update glitch like K-H things it is: Leica Folks have every right in the world to raise hell about it. In fact REALLY raise hell!!!! The silence in the face of trouble from Leica is inexcusable. I’m with you!!!!
k-hawinkler Posted July 10, 2011 Share #177 Posted July 10, 2011 Firmware bug(s) might have been there all along as well. K-H.
Washington Posted July 10, 2011 Share #178 Posted July 10, 2011 Yup, that’s a possibility too. But Leica’s attitude here sucks big time. Like: you jokers take what we give you and shaddup!
scrubs Posted July 10, 2011 Share #179 Posted July 10, 2011 One thing I can confirm is - this happened before I installed the firmware update and even taking into account other users experience(s) here http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/187415-m9-1-162-firmware-bug-just.html I don't think the new update is the issue. From my experience the problem was there before it. Another email sent to Leica support this evening. Anyone experiencing any problems should do the same. Will post their reply if I ever get one. ho_co Posted July 10, 2011 Share #180 Posted July 10, 2011 ... Leica’s attitude here sucks big time... Rip-- How can you refer to "Leica's attitude," when this seems to be a problem just surfacing? Leica has published lists of recommended cards--does that "suck"? 32GB cards have just started appearing in users' hands because they haven't been available that long. Are you saying that's due to an attitude problem from Leica? So far, we've got a number of problems reported, primarily with SanDisk cards. Exactly what you'd expect, since that's the biggest-selling brand. And sizes and speeds vary, as well as symptoms--zero-k files, truncated files, files messed up in DNG but only when writing DNG + JPG; happens only after firmware update, happened previously, etc. How is Leica supposed to respond to such a varied set of symptoms? Remember, there's also a thread running for people to report their satisfaction with the M9 (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/182164-m9-reliability-poll-nzdavid.html), and it has quite a few people who aren't complaining about card difficulties. The thing to do is to get some reliable data for Leica and us to help figure out the problem, not to blame Leica for their "attitude."
