dennersten Posted July 6, 2011 Share #141 Posted July 6, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hmm i just got an idea for the problem with the last two SD cards. I am sometimes putting the SD card on my external hard disk. Are there magnetics maybe? Are the SD cards sensitive for magnetics?
Advertisement Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Hi dennersten, Take a look here My M9 is eating SD cards [MERGED}. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Double Negative Posted July 6, 2011 Share #142 Posted July 6, 2011 I don't know what your specific problem is, but I'm using a pretty similar setup; Mac w/reader (Simplifi), M9 and 8/16GB SanDIsk Extreme cards. Haven't lost a card, nor image - in nearly a year (next month). Well, technically - in over a decade I've never had a card go bad or lost images... Either you're just "lucky" or you might want to examine your card handling practices...
Val Posted July 6, 2011 Share #143 Posted July 6, 2011 I had the same problem with a Kingston a couple of times until I have changed my formating habit. I found a thread of someone stating that he's using the Mac for transfer and erasing the files. Since I follow his example never had problems. I've posted few weeks back my workflow but lots of people "jumped" over me saying is wrong. So do not try this at home! For works fine the following 1.Transfer pictures from my MacBook pro built in card reader into the location I want 2. I then go into the card, select all pictures, end ERASE 3.with the card still into computer I SECURE ERASE THE FILES from Mac trash bin 4. This procces takes about 10 MINUTES for about 300-400 pics 5.eject card when cleaning the trash bin is done 6.plug the card back into the camera and I'm done I don't know if I'm doing the wright thing or not but for me works I cannot explain why on mac cleaning SECURE takes 10 min and on m9 few sec. I think because the MAC writes 0 three (3) times all over the card space. Try this. Format your card in M9 and then usind a free software from the internet, or a trial version, of some sort of recovery card files, scan your card. I tried once after formating on my m9 using IOLOsearch and recover and I found around 30% of the pics I just took , corupted of couse, but still visible in preview Some of them were just half a pic some of them splited and shifted verticaly. Anyway. The ideea is that lot of bits and pieces were still there. Amother question mark. These card problems shows up after a while. Probably when the junk and crap left behind piles up and camera is incapable of findind a fresh spot to write down and just ....gives up. I am not an expert so I appolagize if I'm wrong. This is the way I work. And by the way. I manage to "save" my faulty Kingston card this way. I just plug it into my mac (after my m9 wont reconize it) and I've copied some random files on it. After that following the steps above I manage to make it work. Thank you
haroldp Posted July 7, 2011 Share #144 Posted July 7, 2011 do you always power off the camera or device before inserting / removing the card ?. On the mac do you eject before removing ? ... H

glenerrolrd Posted July 7, 2011 Share #146 Posted July 7, 2011 When you have an unusual number of bad cards of different makes .....its not the cards . The most common problem is having inadequate battery power . When the load placed on the battery exceeds whats required you can get a “bad write to the card” ....this can corrupt the card . Battery issues can be inadequately charged batteries, bad batteries ,bad chargers or a camera problem . Cards themselves can be corrupted by using them in different cameras , bad card readers or standard practices other than reformatting in the camera itself and of course physical handling. I have only had one truly bad SDHC card since the M8 was introduced . You may want to run Photo Rescue on your cards to see whats there .....I have corrupted a few and almost without exception recovered most of the captures. nodrog Posted July 7, 2011 Share #147 Posted July 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had trouble with some SanDisk Extreme cards when I first got the M9. but I've since learnt the solution, and haven't had a problem since: NEVER EVER delete pictures in camera. I used to do so, as I do still on my D700, but the Leica, being a sensitive flower, just can't handle it. That's my take on the problem, anyhow. As usual, the requisite caveats apply. Chipkahn Posted July 8, 2011 Share #150 Posted July 8, 2011 Further question, so I have a SanDisk 8 GB Extreme that was spoiled in my M9. The card stopped, the camera stopped, everything. And, when I stic the card in my PC, the computer will not even ackowledge it. What can I do to either try to recover the pictures on the card or at least make the card readable so I could reformat it and try to use it again. jaapv Posted July 8, 2011 Share #152 Posted July 8, 2011 If you have a Mac Diskwarrior might possibly be able to repair the file structure, if the Disk Utility should be unable to recover the card. I do not know if there is similar software for PC.

eleanorbrown Posted July 9, 2011 Share #155 Posted July 9, 2011 I have 3 sandisk extreme pro 32 gb cards and this happened to all 3 cards on my m9! Every card. I always format fresh in camera after downloading files onto my Mac and never delete files after download. Only thing that would recognize my corrupted cards was Mac Disk Utility. I reformatted in Dos FAT with 7 times zeroed write over then reformat in my M9. The card would work awhile in my M9 then would corrupt again IN CAMERA! If your experience doesn't prove either an intermittent M9 problem or, my theory, a firmware problem, nothing will. Here are my experiences and those from some others. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/187415-m9-1-162-firmware-bug-just.html Best, K-H. Thomv Posted July 9, 2011 Share #157 Posted July 9, 2011 Perhaps you need to have its teeth extracted?? Seriously, it's vey likely not the camera, just forget about reformatting and erase pictures if really needed. I use Bridge on my MBA to do that and never had a problem. jaapv Posted July 9, 2011 Share #158 Posted July 9, 2011 One basic precaution: always lock the card before downloading from it.
Washington Posted July 10, 2011 Share #159 Posted July 10, 2011 My theory is the M-9 does’t LIKE the latest, greatest, fastest, biggest super-duper card…. because the camera isn’t either. This is more of a Zen thing than technical.

This is more of a Zen thing than technical. Rip, For that reason I bought an older Ultra (II) card. Works most of the time - but not always. Depends on the buttons you push while images are being saved. There is something fishy in the firmware - that's my Zen thing. Best, K-H.
