At the opening of the new Leica store in Manchester a few months ago I heard the word "autofocus" mentioned .I was not intended to hear this and was told to "keep it hush".No more worries about front focus shift and similar nonsense.

The question is : will the "-p" somehow help me take better pictures?

If the answer is no, it would mean that leica has decided to spend the image asset value / legacy of the "-p" into cosmetic (and therefore superficial) developments. It would be surprising and actually not very truthfull to the MP philosophy (which offered a difference vs the M7 in its guts).

Having said that, the black lacker MP was designed to wear out easier so that rich posers can show off a war photographer attitude :).

But if it is really only cosmetic, let's hope that they have at least gave us back the black chrome.

I do only take my M8.2 into war, the MP clearly is for dinner parties, I don't even load film.

It is too cool, to snap away at those parties to show off - film only slows you down (the loading is too complicated anyway - no auto loading on the MP).

Nice thing about using the MP on those parties is, how silent that camera is …

I managed, to start to brass the tip of my thumb lever already (or what is that thingy called, you have to pull all the time before you can push the button again?).

I also found a new, more expensive hood for the 35mm, which is even better to show off now.

Welcome to the forum btw ;-)

Personally, I would like the LED illuminated frame lines especially if 1) I could choose to make them white or red - Red lines make a lot of sense in a dark environment - and 2) if they would show just the outlines for the lens mounted at the moment. .

Wouldn't red,BLUE and white be more patriotic? For the USA, French, Dutch and UK market of course. Italy would get its own red, green and white version. The problem would be Germany itself, where they would be red, yellow and black...:o

As we are talking frame lines, the only idea, why I could think about liking the potential LED framelines, would be, that:

- frame lines are shows first in pairs after the mechanical detection via lens mount

- overridden the above by manual lens selection or automatic lens selection via menu

This would actually be quite beautiful, as getting rid of frame line pairs, which I don't like at all (50/75) and would make selecting better fitting frame lines for exotic lenses easier (85mm, 100mm, 105mm, etc).

It would take one beautiful mechanical aspect of the M away, but we use it to shoot it right?

LED framelines aren't a change to the way framelines are projected, it's just replacing the light source. There's nothing about LED framelines in their current form that makes implementing your idea any easier than with 'normal' framelines.

I agree that black could be a bit problematic... ;)

But note that the third color officially is gold and not yellow. An M9 with golden framelines sounds like a collector's dream... :p

Did anyone read the inscription below the Leica script on the "leaked" picture from Seal :D

Extracting poor-quality data from imagery is part of what I do for a living.

The most I can read is “AMERA AG”

The location of these letters with respect to the “Leica” script matches that in the ‘classic’ engraving option offered under the a la carte programme.

I’ve ‘doctored’ an image from the a la carte website to get an idea of what the M9-P (as it seems to be emerging via the ‘leaks’) would look like. The image still has the old-style speed dial and shutter release button, but gives the general idea. I didn’t change them in order to make sure that this pic is not misinterpreted as another ‘leak’.

Best regards,

Doug

All this talk about cosmetic niceties. Sapphire glass, inscriptions, dot colours. I would prefer Leica actually spend their time addressing the issues with the M9 (some of which should already have been addressed with the move from the M8. Forget the M9.2... or whatever they choose to call it. Focus on the problems and make sure the next version lives up to expectation. Here's a few to start with:

Faster power on time

MUCH faster wake-up time. For a camera designed with street shooting in mind, I've lost count of the number of shots I've missed because the camera just can't get it's act together quick enough.

An LCD screen worthy of a camera at this price point, and not something that belongs to cameras 5+ years ago

Liveview, to take some of the focusing guesswork out of using lenses like the Noctilux

A power on button that isn't quite so easily knocked on accidentally

Auto-ISO functionality that can also work based on lens focal length and shutter speed combination.

The M9 creates wonderful images, but Leica could really do with listening to their customers a little bit more. Much of what I've listed above was discussed shortly after the M8 came out... and ignored. The special-editions seem to be more important. Pity. I just want a camera that feels intuitive and doesn't have quite so many easily addressed shortfalls from a camera company that traditionally served photographers, not collectors.

Sometimes I shoot from the hip. Depends on the situation. That said, even when I do raise to my eye I'm sometimes ahead of the camera's electrics. The fact remains that lag like this is unacceptable in a camera designed with street shooting and capturing the 'decisive moment' in mind. By the time the M9 gets it's act together that moment is often halfway down the street.
